Who are International Medical Graduates?
International Medical Graduates are graduates of medical school from outside the USA or Canada. The NRMP classifies two types of IMGs:
• US IMGs and
• Non-US IMGs.
The majority of US IMGs reside there and are typically US citizens. They simply leave the country to attend medical school or medical college, return to the country to complete their residency, and then carry on with their lives in the country.
Graduates who have spent the majority of their lives outside the United States are known as non-US IMGs. In their native country or abroad, they complete medical school or residency. On one of the following Visas, they then relocate to the USA: O1 visa, J-1 visa, or H1B visa.
What is an IMG friendly hospital?
IMG friendly hospitals are ones that have a history of accepting IMGs into their post-graduate residency training programs and have high match rates for international medical graduates (IMG). The residency programs that are most welcoming to IMGs are typically located in these hospitals.
Both the US and Canada have a number of IMG-friendly hospitals and residency programs, but the eligibility and application requirements for IMGs can differ by nation, state or province, hospital, or program. International medical graduates must first obtain IMG certification from the ECFMG in order to be considered for residency programs in the US or Canada. Additionally, they must take and pass the nation's medical licensing exams before they can submit an application there.
It's difficult for IMGs to find a residency match in either nation, but the US welcomes a lot of foreign medical graduates each year. The majority of the 12,000 or so IMGs who apply to US residency programs each year are accepted into one of the specialties that is IMG friendly, like pediatrics, family medicine, or internal medicine. International graduates who live in IMG-friendly states like New York or Florida occupy a large portion of these positions.

The program's conclusion is really about asking yourself what you want out of your training. This is a smaller (500-bed) city hospital that is very busy (the ED was packed at 1 p.m. with patients on gurneys in the hallway) but has the typical ancillary services issues that other city hospitals seem to have (IV's and phlebotomy). The ID program, on the other hand, is extensive, with two floors dedicated to HIV and all types of pathology. So, if you want high-volume, hands-on medicine where you will do a lot of lines, IVs, and blood draws with relative independence and supervision, this is the place to be. If you want cushioned hours with low intensity so that you can enjoy NYC more than usual, this is the place to be.

Because many criteria are considered, it is not possible to give a meaningful "cutoff" for Board scores alone but failed attempts and scores below the 80th percentile are becoming unacceptable. Step 1 CK & CS(if applicable) and Step 2 are required to apply; Step 3 is not required but can be important if there is a failure on one of the other examinations. However, a failure on one of the exams does not necessarily exclude a candidate with strong credentials.
