Teaching the alphabet is foundational for learning a language. Around the age of 2, children begin showing interest in learning alphabet letters. While some kids learn letters very quickly, others need more repetition and time to learn letters. Today Knowinsider is going to share with you some of the best ways to teach the alphabet for kids!
Read Alphabet Books
One of the most recommended ways is to form the habit of learning and reading alphabet books. Read all sorts of alphabet books to your children, even starting as babies. According to the teachingmama.org, the repetition will really help your child learn the alphabet at a young age. Kids love reading all of them because they are different from each other.

Participate in ABC Sing-A-Long Songs
Learning through songs is also a good way. It is suggested by the damngoodmom.com that the ABC song and other popular ABC sing-along songs may not be exciting for you but it helps children learn the alphabet without pressure. In your house, ABC songs should be sung hundreds of times.
Sandpaper Letters
Using sandpaper letters is a great way to introduce letters to children. Some of the recommendations are Didax Sandpaper Tracing Letters or School Supply Tactile Letters Kit. This is perfect pre-writing activity because children use their finger to trace the sandpaper letters.
Alphabet Puzzles
Creatively, teaching letters with alphabet puzzles are an amazing tool for teaching the alphabet. The favourite puzzle is from Melissa and Doug. It’s a beautiful wooden puzzle with neat pictures. This is a great way to practice vocabulary and verbal skills, too.

Sensory Activities
While some kids learn letters very quickly, others need more repetition and time to learn letters. It is always said that children learn best when they have many multisensory experiences with letters.
You are encouraged to incorporate sensory play into learning alphabet letters. When children have meaningful activities with repeated exposure, they start to pick up on letter names. One way is this alphabet ice excavation activity.
3 Important Things to Remember About How To Teach Letters
There is no right age. Although there are skills we want our children to learn before beginning pre-school and/or kindergarten, there is no one right age to teach the letters of the alphabet. Each child is different. Children learn at their own speed. Getting frustrated with a child for not learning at the same pace as other children are not useful. Instead, meet them where they are and offer compassion as you figure out how they learn best. You don’t need to teach the alphabet in order. There is no rule about learning the alphabet in order. In fact, my daughter learned the letter ‘J’ first. The letters of her name are displayed in her nursery turned toddler room (tear) and each day my husband would ask her about the letters. It stuck. |
