Cleaning up a messy bedroom can seem like a daunting task, but if you prepare a simple plan, you can clean up thoroughly and in record time. Assess your bedroom and the time you need to really get involved in the process. You can get a lot done in a short amount of time if you map it out well!

Here's a basic speed cleaning roadmap to kick your routine in high gear:

Plan out how to clean your room

It might be tempting to tidy up your room by hiding all your toys under the bed and stuffing your clothes into any drawer, but you’ll feel much more satisfied if you do a thorough job. Ask your parents what exactly they’d like to see in your tidy room and find out if they have any room-cleaning tips, notes on How Stuff Works. Do they want to see all of the floors? Should you get your dirty clothes ready to wash? Do they want you to make your bed?

Write down what they say and use it to make a list of things you need to do. If you need some tidy bedroom ideas, here’s an example of what that list might look like:

Put all toys in their places

Throw rubbish in the bin

Put dirty clothes in the laundry basket

Fold clean clothes and put them away in my wardrobe

Put away the pens, pencils, crayons and paper on my desk

Make the bed

Once you’ve checked off everything on your list, you can declare your room tidy – so then it’s time to call your parents in and see if they agree!

Put on some music

Having something to partially distract you while you work will help make the time go faster. Make sure the music makes you want to sing and dance, according to Wiki How.

It will give you some extra energy and let you see what you are doing. Make your bed as this is only a 5-minute job, but makes a surprising difference to the look of your room.

Challenge yourself

If you're a person who likes a good competition, try to make a cleaning challenge. Can you vacuum the floor in less than five minutes? Did you change the sheets in less time than the commercial ran on TV? By giving yourself small hurdles, you can accomplish your entire task in a surprisingly short period of time.

Reward yourself

Use something you love, like a cup of coffee or watching your favorite reality show, as motivation to get the job done. You might watch the show anyway, but won't you be more satisfied when you've accomplished your task beforehand?

Get your kids involved

It might sound counterproductive, but cleaning with kids helps take some of the work away from you as well as creates unexpected bonding time. Younger children will feel pride in helping, and older kids can practice math (counting how long it takes to fold a pillowcase) and learn science (where does the dust go in the vacuum anyway?)

After getting it more fun, let's get down to step by step to clean your room:

1. Gather All Dirty Clothing and Put It in a Hamper

Since you're in a hurry, don't worry about unrolling socks, and pulling shirts right side out. These tasks are easier to do while sorting the laundry. Just grab all of the dirty clothes and place them in the hamper, The Spruce cites.

2. Collect All Clean Clothes and Refold or Re-Hang

If you have a significant amount of clean clothing lying around waiting to be folded and hung, skip this step and place the clean clothing semi-neatly on your bed after you make it. You can hold your bed hostage and remind yourself to take a few minutes to put away the clothing before bed.

3. Grab All Trash and Put in the Trashcan

This is not the time to determine if you're ready to trash old copies of magazines, or that pair of shoes you've needed to be repaired for two years. We're throwing away obvious trash, not sorting through boxes and closets. Save the major trash sweep for when you have more time.

4. Make the Bed

Yes, we know there is a major debate about whether or not to make the bed. You are just going to get back into it in a few hours. But if we used that argument for other areas of our home, we would never have clean floors, dishes, or laundry. Why wash something when it's just going to get used again? Making the bed changes the look of a room. It makes a room more inviting and uncluttered looking.

5. Pick Up All the Misplaced Items on the Floor, Bed, Desk, Etc.

Put them in a basket, box, or bag. These are items that belong in another room in the house. Don't try to take them back one at a time. Just put them all in one location for now and move on.

6. Straighten Surfaces

If it has been a long time since you have cleaned in here, you may have large accumulations of your stuff that belongs in your room but is not in its proper place. Take a brief survey of this "stuff". If in a minute or less you can put it all away, do so. If not place it all in a container so that you can go through it and organize it later.

7. Sweep and Mop or Vacuum

Don't move furniture to sweep or vacuum. Just do a quick run through. If you have a few minutes left over, grab the baskets of "stuff" and place the items in it in their proper areas.

Do not let yourself leave the miscellaneous baskets unattended for too long. The contents will pile up, spillover, and lead to more mess. If you do not have time now to sort through them, take another fifteen minutes sometime in the next day to do so. Make sure you remembered the clean clothes. If there were too many to fold and put away, are they neatly waiting on your made bed?

8. Put Away Your Supplies

Allow yourself to reflect on how much nicer this briefly cleaned room is. If you keep up this regime regularly in your room, you'll always be able to find your bed. And isn't that what we all want.

Keep up the good work

Knowing how to clean your room doesn’t end after you’ve done it just once. It’ll be much easier to do it next time if you keep looking out for things to put away. You can keep your game going by challenging yourself to find and put away 10 things every day before you have your supper, and you’ll be surprised by how much easier it is to tidy up your room when you’ve been doing that for a while!
