iPhone 14 Leaks: Images, New Features and Release Date

Apple has already been working on iPhone 14, although the company has just released new iPhone 13 models. We also learned that the iPhone 14 Pro models may have a taller screen due to the new design and that Apple has still been working on satellite features.

The iPhone 14 is expected to debut in the fall of this year, and we're already hearing rumors about its price, design and release date. The latest buzz comes from two apparently leaked series of renders: one depicting the base-level iPhone 14, and one showing us the iPhone 14 Pro.

Earlier this week, we also heard that Apple won't release a Mini version of the iPhone 14 and more buzz concerning the iPhone 14's processor. Previous speculation was that the whole iPhone 14 series would upgrade to an A16 chip, as has happened the last couple years. But reliable Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said in a tweet on Sunday that only the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max will get the A16, while the rest of the iPhone 14 lineup (the 14 and 14 Mini, if it does exist) will stick with the iPhone 13's A15 chip.

In other words, it's easy to see why the iPhone 14 is one of our most anticipated phones of 2022. Here’s what we’ve heard so far about the iPhone 14, why it figures to be one of the biggest Apple products of 2022 and what we’d like to see from the new flagships.

iPhone 14: Release Date

Apple is yet to breathe a word about the iPhone 14 – let alone its release date. But since Apple typically unveils new iPhones at the same time each year, it's highly likely we'll see the iPhone 14 arrive in September 2022.

The iPhone 13 broke cover on 14th September 2021, the second Tuesday in the month. Apple seems to favour the first or second Tuesday of September, which suggests the iPhone 14 could debut on either Tuesday 6th or Tuesday 13th September 2022.

Apple events are usually held the company's Apple Park headquarters in California, and they tend to start at 10am Pacific Time, which is 6pm GMT / 4am AEST.

Apple's first event of 2022 went ahead in March, but there's was no word of the iPhone 14. Instead, tech fans were treated to the long-awaited iPhone SE 3 and a new iPad Air.

iPhone 14: Possible Price

As for price, it’s also difficult to predict. But we suspect the iPhone 14 will match the price of the iPhone 13, which starts at $799 for the regular iPhone 13 and $999 for the iPhone 13 Pro. However, there could be no iPhone 14 mini at all, so we'd expect a larger 6.7-inch iPhone 14 Max to cost $899.

From there, the iPhone 14 Pro could cost $999 and the iPhone 14 Pro Max $1,099 or more.

However, leaker LeaksApplePro has claimed a price hike could be coming for the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max with the phones costing $1,099 and $1,199 respectively. That’s a $100 price increase compared to their iPhone 13 counterparts. This relatively significant leap in launch price would certainly sting the wallet of anyone hoping to score a high-end next-gen iPhone 14.

iPhone 14: Design

The biggest news on the iPhone 14’s design comes from one big leak, which includes unofficial renders of the iPhone 14 Pro Max.

You can see one of these below, and it includes a punch-hole camera instead of a notch, with the Face ID components presumably being under the screen. It also doesn’t really have a camera bump, with the lenses sitting almost flat on the back – a thing that is apparently achieved by making the phone thicker.

The back is a semi-glossy glass, the volume buttons are shown to be round, and it apparently has titanium sides, in place of stainless steel on the iPhone 13 Pro Max. You can also see that there’s still a triple-lens camera and a Lightning port.

The colors shown here aren’t official (though the source claims to have seen a rose gold model), and it’s worth also noting that this design is thought to only apply to the Pro models, with the iPhone 14 (and iPhone 14 Max if there is one) likely to still have a notch. It’s not currently clear which if any of the other design details here could make it to the standard models.

We would of course take this with a huge helping of salt, especially as it comes from Jon Prosser, who has a mixed track record, and as another source has said the iPhone 14 Pro range will still have a notch (albeit a smaller one) - possibly as well as a punch-hole.

But Prosser is often right, and both Mark Gurman and Ming-Chi Kuo (two leakers with excellent track records for Apple information) have since said that the notch will be replaced with a punch-hole camera, as more recently has The Elec.

Another leaker has chimed in to say the same too, though they claim that the camera cut-out will be pill-shaped, suggesting that it might be bigger than most punch-hole cameras.

Ross Young - a supply-chain expert in the world of smartphone displays - has said he believes the company will adopt a "hole + pill" design of the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max. That will mean a pill-shaped cutout, as well as a smaller hole that will still be visible – a theory backed up with a leaked schematic cut out.

More sources have now agreed with this, and leaked CAD renders visible below show this design too, though they don't show the rear camera changes you can see further up.

All that said, Gurman has recently said the iPhone 14 range will include “a hole-punch-sized notch”, and it's not clear from that whether he means a small notch or an actual punch-hole, so there's still some uncertainty.

Elsewhere, we’ve heard that the Pro models could use a titanium alloy for their frame. This would likely be stronger than the materials used in current models, and this source also claims there will be an iPhone 14 Max in place of an iPhone 14 mini.

iPhone 14: Display

We’re expecting a shakeup in the iPhone 14 range, as we'll reportedly see a standard iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro come with a 6.1-inch display, and a possible iPhone 14 Plus and iPhone 14 Pro Max to sport a 6.7-inch display. So no more 5.4-inch mini.

Given the iPhone 13 Pro and 13 Pro Max have a 120Hz refresh rate display, it would be great to see all iPhone 14 models have such a screen, likely using an LTPO panel or an evolution of that display tech.

A new supply chain rumor has the iPhone 14 Max, potentially called the iPhone 14 Plus, tipped to get a 120Hz refresh rate display. LG will apparently be the screen maker in this case, though it's as yet unclear whether the standard iPhone 14 will get a faster refresh rare or stick to 60Hz.

One report from The Elec says that at least one iPhone 14 model with sport an LTPS display, which means a 60Hz panel could be sticking around. Subsequent supply chain reports have only reinforced the idea that the standard iPhone 14 may miss out on a fast-refreshing display.

Yet another slightly different rumor suggests the iPhone 14 and 14 Max could have 90Hz refresh rates. This would be an improvement over the iPhone 13 and 13 mini, but wouldn't tread on the toes of the Pro model's faster displays.

An always-on display would also seem logical for the iPhone 14 given it was tipped for the iPhone 13 but never made it into the latest iPhone.

No Notch and New Face ID Hardware Design?

For at least some of the iPhone 14 models, Apple is working to eliminate the notch that houses the hardware needed for Face ID. The notch was a controversial design decision when it was introduced in 2017, and since then it's changed little with the exception of the size tweak with the iPhone 13.

Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said in March 2021 that the 2022 iPhone models would not have a notch, and would instead adopt a hole-punch style design that's been popular on many Android phones.

Since Kuo's prediction, there have been other rumors that have made the front design of the iPhone 14 Pro models a bit less clear. Leaker Dylandkt has said that rather than a hole-punch design, the camera cutout on the iPhone 14 Pro models will be pill shaped. Display analyst Ross Young has further clarified and said that he expects to see both a pill-shaped cutout and a circular cutout. The circular cutout will likely house the Face ID dot projector, and the pill-shaped cutout will include the front camera, Face ID infrared camera, and possibly other components.

Apple may also be planning to put some of the Face ID hardware under the iPhone's display, which will cut down on the sizes of the cutouts that are needed and will leave more available screen space on the front of the device. Both analyst Ross Young and Bloomberg's Mark Gurman have said that Apple is working on an under-display Face ID solution, but there's a chance that it will not be ready for use in 2022 devices.

Barclays analysts claim that Apple is planning to adopt a laser-based time-of-flight architecture for Face ID that would allow for substantial changes to be introduced to the front-facing TrueDepth camera array, and other rumors point to a unibody lens design for a reduction in the size of the front camera module.

iPhone 14: Camera

All of the 2022 iPhones could see improvements to the Ultra Wide camera, and there's a slim possibility that Apple will introduce "periscope" lens technology that could allow for optical zoom up to 10x.

Other smartphone brands have already adopted periscope lens technology, but Apple has allegedly run into some issues because much of the technology is guarded by patents owned by other companies. Apple could license technology from a manufacturer like Samsung, or continue to work on its own solution. Unfortunately, it's not looking like periscope lens technology will be ready for release in 2022, and it could instead come in 2023 with the iPhone 15 models.

Even if periscope lens technology is not ready for a 2022 launch, there are still telephoto lens improvements coming. Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo says says that Apple will upgrade the telephoto camera from a 6-element lens to a 7-element lens.

Kuo also believes that the 2022 Pro iPhone models will feature a 48-megapixel Wide camera, which would be a major improvement over the current 12-megapixel camera, and 8K video recording capabilities.

The 48-megapixel camera in the iPhone 14 Pro models will also be able to take 12-megapixel shots, likely through a process known as pixel-binning. Pixel binning merges data from multiple smaller pixels on the camera's image sensor into one "super-pixel" for improved low-light sensitivity.

With this feature, the iPhone 14 Pro models may be able to take full 48-megapixel photos in situations with good lighting, but when lighting is poor, it will use the pixel binning process for a higher-quality 12-megapixel photo that takes advantage of the 48-megapixel lens.

Kuo believes that the 8K video recording feature will allow iPhone-recorded videos displayed on an 8K display or TV to provide "a better user experience," and that this resolution will allow the iPhone to create videos and images more suitable for augmented and mixed reality devices like the AR/VR headset that Apple has in development for 2022.

iPhone 14: Specs, battery life and charging

Here's everything else we know (and think we know) so far about the iPhone 14 lineup's specifications and potential new features.

Better battery life

Apple's 2022 iPhone could offer better battery life, according to a report from Taiwan's Economic Daily News (via MacRumors). This is said to be due to a new 5G chip that could also provide the new iPhone with Wi-Fi 6E connectivity.

Wi-Fi 6E adoption

The iPhone 14 could be equipped with Wi-Fi 6E, according to a November note from Kuo, reported on by 9to5Mac. However, the analyst says the components needed for Wi-Fi 6E may be in short supply. Apple's rumored VR headset is also said to have Wi-Fi 6E.

A16 chip

The iPhone 14 was previously expected to have an A16 chip, which would improve upon the iPhone 13's A15 chip, in keeping with Apple's previous pattern. However, a recent prediction from Kuo says the A16 will only appear in the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max, while the 14 and 14 Max will keep the A15.

120Hz ProMotion display

All iPhone 14 models could include Apple's ProMotion display, which only the iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max variants currently have. ProMotion boosts the screen's refresh rate for smoother performance, up to 120Hz. This is more speculation than actual rumor, based on changes in Apple's supply chain that would make it easier for the company to offer the feature across its next lineup.

Young, however, speculates that Apple will continue to offer ProMotion displays exclusively to its Pro models. The analyst suggests that Chinese manufacturer BOE would be one of Apple's LTPO OLED display suppliers, but the company doesn't have a large production capacity right now.

5G connectivity

Apple introduced 5G connectivity to its iPhone 12 lineup and, unsurprisingly, included it in the iPhone 13 as well. There's no reason to believe we won't see 5G-compatible iPhone 14s, too. A July report from Nikkei Asian Review also predicts Apple will "go all in on 5G" in 2022.

MagSafe accessories

Like 5G, MagSafe was introduced to the iPhone in 2020's iPhone 12 lineup. The snap-on, magnetic accessories include wallets, battery packs and chargers, and it was one of our favorite iPhone 12 features. The iPhone 13 is also compatible with MagSafe, and we expect the same for Apple's next generation of phones.

Satellite connectivity

An 11th-hour iPhone 13 rumor via Kuo that didn't come to fruition was the addition of satellite connectivity, which would allow users to send text messages via satellite in areas without cellular coverage, at least in emergency situations, as reported by Bloomberg. Alas, satellite connectivity is nowhere to be found in the iPhone 13 lineup, but perhaps that means it's coming in the iPhone 14 instead.
