Who is Xi Jinping: Biography

Born in 1953 to a Chinese Communist Party (CCP) leader, Xi Jinping worked his way up the party ranks to become a major player in the Chinese Politburo.

By 2013, Xi was elected General Secretary of the Communist Party, Chair of the Military Commission and President of the People’s Republic of China. Although he earned criticism for human rights violations and disruptive economic regulations, Xi also continued the country's rise as a global superpower. His name and philosophy was added to the party constitution in 2017, and the following year he successfully pushed for the abolition of presidential term limits, according to Biography.

Xi was born June 15, 1953, the son of a well-placed Chinese Communist Party leader, Xi Zhongxun, a former comrade of Communist China’s founder Mao Tse-tung. Considered a “princeling” — someone destined to rise within the government due to family connections — Xi’s destiny was altered when his father was purged from power in 1962.

Xi Jinping and Family

When serving as secretary of the Zhejiang Provincial Party Committee, Xi Jinping told a reporter from Yan'an, "I make a phone call to my wife (Peng Liyuan) every day. We have been married for more than ten years, but I do that every day.", according to China Plus (the official English website of China Radio Internationa).

On the bookshelf of Chinese President Xi Jinping, there are four pictures that are particularly noticeable. They record the warm moments in Xi Jinping's life with his parents, wife and daughter. Xi Jinping has always been an example of filial piety toward his parents and love for his wife and child, China Plus cites.

On December 12, 2016, Xi Jinping spoke at a conference in Beijing to honor model families across the country. He called for more to be done in China to enhance virtue and civility in families and make them "an important foundation" for national development, progress and social harmony. People from all walks of life should work for "a new trend toward socialist family values," featuring love for the nation, family and one another, a devotion to progress and kindness, as well as mutual growth and sharing. "Traditional family values have been engraved on the minds and melted into the blood of the Chinese people," said Xi Jinping.

The 27-year-old was born on June 27, 1992, and studied French at her high school, Hangzhou Foreign Languages School.
