After a long time since the first season of Squid Game swept the world, Netflix and director Hwang Dong Hyuk have officially announced the first teaser for season 2 of this highly anticipated series.

Squid Game season 1, which ran for nine episodes, holds the title of the most watched TV show on Netflix.

The streaming service tweeted: "Red light... GREENLIGHT! Squid Game is officially coming back for Season 2!" The streaming platform tweeted the 10-second teaser, along with an announcement from Hwang Dong-hyuk, the creator, writer, director and executive producer of the series.

Meanwhile, the film's director and screenwriter - Hwang Dong Hyuk - sent a special letter to fans to announce the Squid Game season 2. In this letter, the director confirmed that the male lead Lee Jung Jae will continue to return. In addition, actor Lee Byung Hun will also take on the role of Front Man in the second movie.

"It took me 12 years for the Squid Game season 1 to come out last year, but it only took 12 days for Squid Game to become the most popular series of all time on Netflix," director Hwnag Dong Hyuk shared, "And Now, Gi Hun (played by Lee Jung Jae) will return, Front Man (played by Lee Byung Hun) is back."

Also in this letter, the director mentioned the possibility that actor Gong Yoo could also return in season 2. In the season 1, the actor appeared as a guest actor when he played the man. he put on a vest and brought the male lead to the game Squid Game.

The South Korean screenwriter said that fans shouldn’t anticipate a release until late 2023 or even 2024, revealing he only had about three pages’ worth of ideas at the time.

Squid Game has been confirmed for a season 2. Creator Hwang Dong-hyuk told in April 2022 that fans can expect to see the show return in 2024.

However, Variety reported that Squid Game Season 2 could be released earlier, at “the end of 2023.”

The outlet reported, “Hwang is in the midst of final discussions with Netflix for a second season of Squid Game and anticipates that it could be out by the end of 2023 or 2024. He only has about three pages’ worth of ideas that he plans to turn into a script, so there isn’t much he can say except that there will be more games.”

The slow progress comes as a result of the writer's ongoing involvement in other projects – Hwang is currently working on a new movie, Killing Old People Club, which he says is sure to be “another controversial film.”

Some fans speculate that the new episodes will follow Gi-Gun as he tries to hold the Front Man and the other overseers of the games accountable.

Dong-hyuk told Deadline in March 2022, “There will be more great games, that’s all I can say. I’m just still brainstorming and collecting the ideas for season 2. I haven’t even started with the writing yet.”

"Humanity is going to be put to a test through those games once again," he explained. "However, the way those games are played could be different. If they were capable of talking with one another, of cooperating with one another, I do agree that there could have been a possibility that we could have seen more winners. I want to ask the question, 'Is true solidarity between humans possible?'"

Hwang Dong-Hyuk told: In the first season that we saw Gi-hun is a character whose humanity is shown through or exposed in certain situations. In other words, his humanity is shown through a very passive manner.

"But I would think that in the second season, what he has learned from the games and his experience in the first season, they will all be put to use in a more active manner," he continued. "At the same time, as for the Front Man who was also a past winner but became a Front Man, it's like Darth Vader. Some end up Jedi and some become Darth Vader, right? I think that maybe Gi-hun will go through a certain critical point where he is put through a test as well."

Who Are The New Characters in Squid Game Season 2?

After confirming that both Gi-hun and the "Front Man" will return for season 2, Squid Game creator Hwang teased that the new episodes will introduce "Young-hee's boyfriend, Cheol-Su" — but it won't be a fairy tale reunion. "Maybe we’ll get a romantic duet from the couple right before they give you that deadly look," Netflix teased in an article on their website, Tudum.

"There’s definitely a lot of pressure on how to make Season 2 even better," Hwang told Netflix about introducing Cheol-Su and the other new characters. "I know that a lot of the different fans and audiences have enjoyed the series very much, but really we’re focusing on how to make it even more joyful to the global audience."

Who is Cheol-Su?

The writer-director had teased the involvement of all three in various interviews prior to the show’s renewal, Hwang’s message also contained mention of a brand new character: Cheol-su.

“You’ll also be introduced to Young-hee’s boyfriend, Cheol-su,” Hwang wrote, in reference to the series’ now-iconic murderous robot doll. Young-hee featured in Squid Game’s first episode – Red Light, Green Light – as a motion-sensing animatron that ordered the deaths of any contestants caught moving while under its watchful gaze. Young-hee was responsible for 255 fatalities in the show, making Red Light, Green Light the deadliest game of any featured across Squid Game’s nine episodes.

Cheol-su, it seems, is a male companion of Young-hee – and one we expect to be equally terrifying. Perhaps he’ll even sing his own version of the latter’s eerie “Red Light, Green Light, 1-2-3” jingle…
