Aries: Jang Deok-Su
Photo: The Cinemaholic |
Many things could be said about Jang Dyeok-su, but calling him a coward is not one of them. Aries are typically characterized as self-assertive people that are known for being brave, optimistic, and good organizers. In true Aries fashion, Dyeok-su constructed the alliance that dominated most of the game and posed a significant threat to the rest of the contestants.
Unfortunately, Aries are also known for their aggressive nature, causing them to push others away at times. This is seen by how willing Dyeok-su’s teammates were to turn on him, and that his actions ultimately pushed away his closest potential ally in Han Mi-nyeo.
Strengths: courageous, determined, confident, enthusiastic, optimistic, honest, passionate Weaknesses: impatient, moody, short-tempered, impulsive, aggressive |
Who is Jang Deok-su?
Seoul gangster Jang Deok-su has amassed quite the gambling debt and is on the run from his crime lord boss when he joins the game. He is not to be messed with, in case you didn’t guess that from the picture above.
Heo Sung-tae is no stranger to playing villains, having appeared in series Beyond Evil as ruthless businessman Lee Chang-jin. He rose to fame in 2016’s The Age of Shadows and has had roles in Netflix’s Racket Boys and The Fortress.
Taurus: The Salesman
Photo: Pinterest |
The Salesman is a mysterious figure in Squid Game that leaves many more questions in viewers’ minds than he answers. Considering that Tauruses tend to be very materialistic and possessive people, it should come as no surprise that he is willing to do the horrible things he does for (presumably) a big payday.
Despite the intimidating stature of the Bull, most Tauruses prefer to avoid conflict whenever possible. This is why The Salesman opts to dodge Gi-hun at the end of the series, instead of partaking in a potentially violent argument.
Strengths: reliable, patient, practical, devoted, responsible, stable Weaknesses: stubborn, possessive, uncompromising |

Gemini: In-Ho (The Front Man)
Photo: Newsweek |
Geminis are often described as persuasive people that can convince others to see their sides of things. While viewers did not see In-Ho’s path to victory in the games and eventual ascension to becoming the Front Man, it’s easy to imagine him manipulating others for his own benefit.
The Twins represent not only the Gemini sign, but also the path In-Ho has taken as both a player and a worker, and the struggle he faces choosing between his life back home with his brother and his new persona as the Front Man.
Strengths: gentle, affectionate, curious, adaptable, ability to learn quickly and exchange ideas Weaknesses: nervous, inconsistent, indecisive |
Who is The Front Man?
The Front Man is in charge of running the whole game. Like all those who work on the game, he wears a mask to maintain strict anonymity, with viewers not finding out who is beneath until episode eight.
The face under the mask is perhaps one of the most well-known among the Squid Game cast, with actor and singer Lee Byung-hun appearing in some of the highest-grossing films in Korea, including Inside Men, Master and The Good, the Bad, the Weird. He has also portrayed T-1000 in 2015 Terminator Genisys and has appeared in The Magnificent Seven and G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra.

Cancer: Han Mi-Nyeo
Photo: Men's Health |
Cancers are extremely devoted people, who will remain loyal if treated with kindness and respect. However, as viewers see with Han Mi-nyeo, once someone breaks that trust it will be impossible to mend.
Mi-nyeo has a temperamental and spiteful attitude, traits commonly associated with Cancers. Her inability to let go of her grudge against Dyeok-su would ultimately result in her death; but perhaps it’s more likely that she believed she had won after proving crossing her was the biggest mistake of his game.
Strengths: tenacious, highly imaginative, loyal, emotional, sympathetic, persuasive Weaknesses: moody, pessimistic, suspicious, manipulative, insecure |
Who is Han Mi-nyeo?
Not much is known of the mysterious Han Mi-nyeo when she enters the game, other than the fact she’s a poor single mother – and intent on surviving at all costs.
Fans of Korean dramas will recognise Kim Joo-ryung from her roles in Korean dramas Kingmaker: The Change of Destiny and When My Love Blooms. She also appeared in 2012’s Sleepless Night and Mr Sunshine.
Leo: Seong Gi-Hun
Photo: Looper |
Seong Gi-hun repeatedly displays his big-hearted nature during the games, with the way he treats Il-nam, Ali, and Byeok-su as he forms the team that would eventually progress all the way to the end. This makes sense, as Leos are seen as very compassionate people and natural-born leaders.
Leos are also very prideful, which explains the rivalry he creates in his own head against his daughter’s new step-father. Gi-hun also makes good on his promise of taking care of the loved ones of Sang-woo and Sae-byeok after winning the 45.6 billion won prize, displaying he is a generous person, a trait typically pertaining to Leos.
Strengths: creative, passionate, generous, warm-hearted, cheerful, humorous Weaknesses: arrogant, stubborn, self-centered, lazy, inflexible |
Who is Seong Gi-hun?
Seong Gi-hun is a divorced gambling addict whose financial woes are getting in the way of gaining custody of his daughter. He lives with his mother in a modest abode and soon finds out she has diabetes and needs surgery. When he hears about the secret game and its substantial cash prize, he decides to take part so he can settle his debts and pay for his mother’s medical bills.
The South Korean actor began his career as a model before transitioning to television and film. He has appeared in many South Korean series and films, including The Face Reader, The Last Witness, Typhoon and 2000’s Il Mare, which was the inspiration for Sandra Bullock and Keanu Reeves’ The Lake House.

Virgo: Byeong-Gid
Despite struggling under a massive amount of debt, Byeong-gi proves to be a useful asset to not only the players in the game but also the workers overseeing the competition. Virgos are considered quick thinkers that have a solution for most problems they encounter, and Byeong-gi easily puts himself in a great position to win early on by leveraging his knowledge.
Virgos often expend so much mental energy in their daily lives they can feel overwhelmed by stress. Viewers also see Byeong-gi’s composure tested on multiple occasions until he finally succumbs from a lack of sleep and the tension of performing so many surgeries on top of the death games.
Strengths: loyal, analytical, kind, hardworking, practical Weaknesses: shyness, worry, overly critical of self and others, all work and no play |
Libra: Ji-Yeong
Photo: Radio Times |
Ji-yeong is a relatively quiet character with a big personality. Viewers first meet her as she’s distanced herself from the others until Sae-byeok comes and chooses her as a partner. Like Libras, Ji-yeong wants to be included in the group but not at the risk of causing any conflict.
Libras are often considered charming people that speak frankly, and Ji-yeong instantly connected with audiences and always tells things the way they are. Another cash-strapped player – number 240 to be exact – Ji-yeong forms an unlikely bond with Sae-byeok. It is revealed she was in prison for killing her abusive father.
The actress has had roles in the likes of 365: Repeat of the Year, Hostage: Missing Celebrity, and Doctor John.
Scorpio: Hwang Jun-Ho
Photo: Pinterest |
Quiet and mysterious, Hwang Jun-Ho perfectly reflects the personality traits of the typical Scorpio. Excelling in both physical and mental stamina, Scorpios are able to achieve great things when they fully commit to their work. Jun-Ho expertly outclasses the security systems of the island every step of the way.
It’s not until his personal emotions get in the way that Jun-Ho is defeated. Scorpios can often be obsessive by nature, which proves to be his downfall. Had he not let his personal emotions get in the way in the search for his brother, it’s much more likely that he would have never been caught and could have reported the games to his superiors.
Strengths: resourceful, brave, passionate, stubborn, a true friend Weaknesses: distrusting, jealous, secretive, violent |
Who is Hwang Jun-ho?
Hwang Jun-ho is a Seoul police officer whose missing brother is connected to the game. After an encounter with Gi-hun, Jun-ho goes undercover as a guard in the game.
The prolific Wi Ha-joon has starred in a string of popular Korean films and dramas, including found footage horror Gonjiam: Haunted Asylum and thriller Midnight, and dramas Romance Is a Bonus Book and Something in the Rain.
Sagittarius: Abdul Ali
Photo: Study International |
Few characters managed to capture the hearts of fans in Squid Game the way Abdul Ali did. This makes a lot of sense, considering Sagittarians are reputed for their kindness and loyalty among all of the zodiac signs. Ali is always there when his team needed him, saving Gi-Hun in Red Light, Green Light and serving as the team’s anchor in Tug of War.
While Sagittariuses are usually honest and trustworthy, this works both ways, as sometimes they can be too trusting of others. This proves to be Ali’s downfall, as he’s betrayed by someone he believed to be a friend, the much more cynical Sang-woo.
Strengths: generous, idealistic, great sense of humor Weaknesses: promises more than can deliver, very impatient, will say anything no matter how undiplomatic |
Who is Abdul Ali?
He is a migrant worker hailing from Pakistan who loses several fingers during an accident in the factory where he works. He was never compensated, and he volunteers to take part in Squid Game to provide for his wife and child and the rest of his family in Pakistan.
Indian-born Tripathi is one of the few non-Korean actors in Squid Game. Much like Jung, Squid Game is his first major acting role, though he has appeared in Space Sweepers, also on Netflix, and in the film Ode To My Father.
Capricorn: Cho Sang-Woo
Photo: CafeF |
Capricorns tend to be very efficient people who live organized lives and measure themselves in a goal-oriented fashion. Cho Sang-woo may have also shared the ambition of Capricorn, but took a few wrong steps and ended up in deep financial trouble.
Sang-woo is very realistic about his capabilities and knew eventually his alliance would have to thin itself out. This methodical approach served him well in the game, but Capricorns tend to act on impulse and then regret it later. After all the betrayal he had dealt out, viewers see that regret come to fruition in the very final game against Gi-hun.
Strengths: responsible, disciplined, self-control, good managers Weaknesses: know-it-all, unforgiving, condescending, expecting the w |
Who is Cho Sang-woo?
Cho Sang-woo grew up poor alongside Seong Gi-hun. A gifted student, Cho Sang-woo eventually graduates from Seoul National University and becomes the head of an investment team. Unfortunately, he gets caught stealing money from his clients and is wanted from the police, so he decides to enter the game with Seong Gi-hun.
Hae-soo’s career began in musical theatre before he got his breakthrough in the 2017 drama Prison Playbook, which earned him a Best New Actor win at The Seoul Awards. He also appears in the Korean adaptation of Money Heist.
Aquarius: Kang Sae-Byeok
Photo: aFamily |
Kang Sae-byeok is an extremely self-reliant and independent person, qualities most often reflected by the zodiac sign Aquarius. Sae-byeok displays her intelligence and creative thinking by crawling through the vents to get a sneak peek at the honeycomb game.
Aquariuses are often difficult to classify into one set of personality traits, and sometimes show different facets of themselves to different people. Sae-byeok is shown to be a very compassionate person when it comes to her brother but distances herself from others during the game and even comes off as quite threatening at times.
Strengths: Progressive, original, independent, humanitarian Weaknesses: Runs from emotional expression, temperamental, uncompromising, aloof |
Pisces: Oh Il-Nam
Photo:The CinemaHolic |
Oh Il-Nam is a difficult character to classify, in large part due to the fact he masks his true identity for most of the series. Pisces are often materialistic and money-minded people, indicated by the fact Il-Nam has spent a lifetime making a fortune off of other people’s debts and bad luck.
While tempting people with billions in cash and murdering them for failure is objectively about as bad as it gets, Il-Nam does not appear to be outwardly evil. Pisces are very emotionally sensitive and aware people, and a lifetime spent ignoring these needs in favor of money has left Il-Nam a lost soul in his old age. Had he channeled his creativity into other avenues, it’s possible he would have lived a much more fulfilling life.
Strengths: Compassionate, artistic, intuitive, gentle, wise, musical Weaknesses: Fearful, overly trusting, sad, desire to escape reality, can be a victim or a martyr |
Who is Oh Il-nam?
The eldest player in Squid Game, Oh Il-nam, also known as player 001, joins the game after being diagnosed with a brain tumour. He soon strikes up a friendship with Gi-hun, who feels responsible for the old man – but he’s not as helpless as he may seem at first glance.
Oh Young-su played a monk in both A Little Monk and Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter… and Spring.
