Man City vs Dortmund: H2H

• The teams were paired together for the only previous time in the 2012/13 group stage, only City's second UEFA Champions League campaign, and it proved an unhappy one for the English club.

• A 90th-minute Mario Balotelli penalty did rescue a point for the English champions at the City of Manchester Stadium on Matchday 2, Marco Reus having given Dortmund the lead a minute past the hour, but Julian Schieber's 57th-minute goal proved enough for the German club to win the Matchday 6 fixture at the BVB Stadion Dortmund, according to UEFA.

• Those results helped Jürgen Klopp's Dortmund finish first in Group D on 14 points, ahead of Real Madrid and Ajax. While BVB went on to reach the final, losing an all-German decider against Bayern München at Wembley, City under Roberto Mancini bowed out after finishing fourth in their section on three points and failing to win any of their six games.

• While Sergio Agüero is the sole City survivor from those two fixtures, having played 90 minutes at home before coming on as a substitute in Germany, Reus and Mats Hummels played both games while Łukasz Piszczek featured in Manchester and was an unused substitute in Dortmund. İlkay Gündoğan, now of City, started both games for Dortmund.

Betting

If Roberto Mancini was brutally honest, this is a fixture that he could do without his Manchester City side playing. They are already out of the competition and can only qualify for the Europa League - a competition that the Premier League champions have very little interest in, Sports Mole says.

However, should they defeat Borussia Dortmund and Ajax fail to defeat Real Madrid in the Spanish capital, that is exactly where Mancini's men will find themselves next year. It is also a relatively meaningless encounter for Dortmund, who have already secured top spot ahead of Real Madrid.

Previous trips to Germany have not ended well for City. From five outings, they have won only once and lost four times. In contrast, Dortmund have never lost to English opposition on their own patch.

Despite his team's early omission, Mancini is expected to name a strong team for the match, although Aleksandar Kolarov is likely to miss out with a muscular problem. Mancini's opposite number Jurgen Klopp may use the match to give some of his squad players an outing.

Predictions: 2-1

Possible starting lineups:

Dortmund: Weidenfeller; Hummels, Piszczek, Subotic, Schmelzer; Perisic, Bender, K. Grosskreutz; Leitner, Reus; Lewandowski

Man City: Hart; Zabaleta, Kompany, Nastasic, Clichy; Y Toure, Garcia, Nasri; Silva, Balotelli; Aguero
