Can I watch the Champions League for free?

Unfortunately not, as ITV lost rights to show the Champions League on free-to-air in 2015. That's set to be the case until at least the end of the end of the 2023-24 season.

In the meantime, though, you'll have to be content with a weekly highlights programme on ITV. The best moments from the games will also be available on the BT Sport YouTube channel shortly after full time.

How to watch Champions League games in USA

TV channels: CBS, CBS Sports Network

Live stream: Paramount+, fuboTV (7-day free trial)

Spanish language: TUDN, Galavision

The Champions League TV and streaming schedule is ... slightly convoluted.

Let's start with the Round of 16: Only two matches from each of the first and second legs will be available to watch on cable (CBS Sports Network). Those games that appear on CBSSN can also be streamed on fuboTV, which is offering a seven-day free trial. For the second leg, Paramount+ (a rebrand of CBS All Access) will stream the Champions League matches.

All second leg matches are also available on Spanish language networks, TUDN and Galavision, which can also be streamed on fuboTV.

The Champions League quarterfinals can only be streamed on Paramount+. The semifinal matches will air on CBSSN and stream on Paramount+.

The Champions League final will air on CBS and stream on Paramount+; fuboTV is also a streaming option for each of the semifinal and final matches, according to sportingnews.

How to watch the Champions League abroad

BT Sport is usually geo-restricted, which means you can only officially stream the games if you're based in the UK.

However, if you are a paying BT Sport or Virgin Media subscriber, you can get around this with a VPN. This will allow you to still appear as if you're in the UK and retain access to channels, and it's completely legal.

You Need a VPN to Watch the UEFA Champions League

Broadcasters are required to block people from streaming content outside of their home region. As a result, most Champions League games are geoblocked and only available in the broadcaster’s location. This means you won’t be able to watch if you’re not located in the same country.

A high-quality VPN hides your location, allowing you to watch the games wherever you are. It does this by masking your IP address and routing your traffic through a secure server in a country of your choice. The VPN then assigns you a new IP address from that country, which makes it look like you’re watching from there.

However, anti-VPN technology, which many streaming services employ, can detect and block low-quality VPNs. A premium VPN gets around this issue by updating its servers’ IPs regularly to avoid detection. The result means unrestricted access to content like the UEFA Champions League.

For streaming sports, look for a VPN with fast, consistent connection speeds. You don’t want to miss a 30-yard screamer because of lagging and buffering problems, as cited by Vpnmentor.
