Running for Presidency

Rejecting independent or third-party presidential candidates has a lengthy history in the US. In actuality, George Washington was the last president to prevail without the support of a political party, and he did it before there were political parties.

Abraham Lincoln, a candidate from the newly established Republican Party, was the last third-party nominee to win the presidency.

The last non-major party candidate to garner more than ten percent of the popular vote was billionaire Ross Perot, who received 19% in 1992 and 8% in 1996. However, he received 0 electoral votes.

Even if the percentage of independent voters is rising, they are still outnumbered by those who consistently back Democratic or Republican candidates.

Stated otherwise, the chances are slim.

Kennedy's argument for hope is dependent on how well he performed in a few national surveys. Libertarian Gary Johnson's popularity was consistently in the high single or low double digits in polls taken during the 2016 presidential race, but he eventually only garnered roughly 3% of the national vote.

This close to an election, horse-race polls are also notoriously untrustworthy, and a large portion of the American population is unaware of Kennedy. For example, according to a February AP-NORC poll, 29% of Americans don't know enough about Kennedy to form an opinion.

It's possible that some of those who declare their support for him are more likely to be responding to his well-known last name than to his genuine campaign platform. According to a CNN/SSRS poll from last spring, 20% of those who said they would consider supporting Kennedy for the Democratic nomination, which he was seeking at the time, claimed that his last name and ties to the Kennedy family had an impact on their decision. Merely 12% stated that it was due to endorsement of his opinions and policies.

But he needs to be on the ballot for any of that to matter.

How does he end up on the voting list?

Forget winning; just becoming a presidential candidate is a difficult undertaking, particularly for independent candidates like Kennedy.

Each state has its own set of regulations, so it takes an army of attorneys to ensure that everything is done correctly. In most states, thousands of signatures are needed.

In a number of states, a pro-Kennedy super PAC is contributing to the cost of Kennedy's ballot access efforts. By establishing a political party and designating Kennedy as its nominee, his allies have facilitated the process in certain states.

His inclusion on the Utah ballot has been approved. The super PAC and his campaign claim he has gathered enough signatures to be eligible in numerous more states, including Arizona, Georgia, and Nevada, which are battleground states. However, those states' election officials have not yet officially confirmed his candidacy.

Kennedy has also stated that he has spoken with Libertarian Party officials, though it's unclear how a partnership between the two may work.
