Nike said in the lawsuit that the company, MSCHF Product Studio Inc, infringed on and diluted its trademark with the black-and-red, devil-themed shoes, which went on sale online on Monday. Lil Nas X is not named as a defendant in the suit.

Lil Nas X: Bio

Montero Lamar Hill (born April 9, 1999), known professionally as Lil Nas X, is an American rapper, singer, and songwriter from Atlanta, Georgia. He is best known for his country rap single "Old Town Road", which achieved viral popularity as part of the "Yeehaw Challenge" on the video sharing app TikTok, Cnet noted.

Nas started uploading songs on SoundCloud in 2018 before releasing his debut single "Old Town Road" on December 3 independently. The song became hugely popular in early 2019 due to the viral "Yeehaw challenge" on social media app TikTok. It was also thanks to this song that Nas was able to sign to Columbia Records.

The song debuted at No. 83 on Billboard's Hot 100 chart before reaching into the top twenty in just a week. It also launched at No. 19 on Hot Country Songs chart, before being controversially removed from the chart in March 2019 after the magazine decided that the song was not embracing "enough elements of today's country music." Many began accusing Billboard of racism after that, given the fact that black artists who release country music are really rare. However, a Billboard spokesperson insisted that the decision "had absolutely nothing to do with the race of the artist."

Despite the removal of the song from Hot Country Chart, Nas' "Old Town Road" continued to do well on other charts. It dethroned Ariana Grande's "7 Rings" on Billboard's Hot 100 chart and marked his first chart-topping single. With that, he became the first solo artist to top the chart on a first try since Cardi B did the same in 2017 with "Bodak Yellow". He also became the first artist to make the swiftest ascent to No. 1 on the chart for an act with no prior Hot 100 history at all since 2013, when Baauer's "Harlem Shake" debuted atop the chart.

Following the success of the song, Nas enlisted Billy Ray Cyrus for a remix of "Old Town Road", which topped iTunes chart. He also has another remix with Young Thug coming soon, Aceshowbiz noted.

Trendy, limited-edition sneakers have been a hot item for a while, and streetwear company MSCHF would seem to be firing on all cylinders when it collaborated with Lil Nas X on what they call Satan Shoes. There were only 666 pairs made, since 666, according to the Bible, is the number of the beast, meaning, the devil, or Satan. The shoes are mostly black with red accents and feature devil references. A pentagram charm hangs from each pair, and they also have "Luke 10:18" written on them -- a verse from the Gospel of Luke that reads, essentially, "I watched Satan fall from heaven like lightning."

Lil Nas X released the shoe with MSCHF as a tie-in to his Satanic-themed music video “Montero (Call Me By Your Name).” The shoes, which are being sold in a limited-edition of 666 pairs, include a pentagram design, an inverted cross, a reference to Luke 10:18 (“I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven”), and actual human blood mixed into the red ink of the soles. The shoes are being sold at $1018 a pair, again in reference to the Bible verse, Rollingstone noted.

Nike, in its lawsuit filed in federal court in New York, said the shoes were produced “without Nike’s approval and authorization,” and the company was “in no way connected with this project.”

“There is already evidence of significant confusion and dilution occurring in the marketplace, including calls to boycott Nike in response to the launch of MSCHF’s Satan Shoes based on the mistaken belief that Nike has authorized or approved this product,” the lawsuit said.

Nike asked the court to immediately stop MSCHF from fulfilling orders for the shoes and requested a jury trial to seek damages. Representatives for Lil Nas X and MSCHF did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Responses from Lil Nas X to Nike’s Lawsuit

A representative for Lil Nas X didn't respond to a request for an official comment. But in addition to tweeting about the shoe giveaway, as mentioned above, the musician has been tweeting jokes about the Nike lawsuit. One tweet shows Squidward of SpongeBob SquarePants sitting in a cardboard box begging for money and is captioned, "me after the Nike lawsuit."
