Annually, on the third of May, the fundamental principles of press freedom are celebrated in order to evaluate press freedom and defend the media from attacks on their independence around the globe. On this day, memorials and tributes are paid to journalists who lost their lives while performing their duties. The United Nations General Assembly designated May 3 as World Press Freedom Day in 1993, following a recommendation adopted at the 26th session of the UNESCO General Conference in 1991.

May 31: World No Tobacco Day

World Health Organization (WHO) and its global partners observe World No Tobacco Day on May 31 each year to raise awareness about the harmful and lethal effects of tobacco use and secondhand smoke exposure and to discourage the use of tobacco in any form. India is the second largest tobacco consumer in the world, and approximately one-sixth of all tobacco-related deaths occur there. It is crucial to raise awareness in India about the harmful and fatal effects of tobacco use.

May 5: Cinco de Mayo, Mexico

Cinco de Mayo is a celebration of the Mexican victory over French colonists at the Battle of Puebla in 1832.

Therefore, it is not surprising that the state of Puebla in central Mexico is considered the best place to visit on May 5th. Residents frequently dress as French and Mexican soldiers for historical reenactments and communal meals. Events have not yet been planned for 2021.

The holiday is also celebrated in the United States and Canada. Typically, this includes a feast of Mexican food and dancing to Mexican music.

May 13: Procession of the Holy Blood, Belgium

On Ascension Day, forty days after Easter, the streets of Bruges are literally filled with a procession of the Holy Blood. Up to 3,000 religious leaders and locals carry a vial of blood, said to be Jesus Christ's blood, through the streets. Some are attired in robes, while others are dressed to represent biblical scenes.

From 2.30 p.m. to 5.30 p.m. in 2021, the procession will run along the Dijver Canal.

The citizens of Bruges have been practicing this practice since the 13th century, despite the fact that it may appear peculiar. It is so important that the Procession of the Holy Blood has Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity UNESCO World Heritage status.
