1. 2021 MINI Cooper Clubman
Length: 168.3 inches | $29,900
The Clubman offers one of the largest trunks in the subcompact car segment, boasting 17.5 cubic feet behind the rear seats. Fold down the back seats, and the Clubman can swallow 47.9 cubic feet of cargo. Loading and unloading is a breeze, thanks to the Clubman’s unconventional side-swinging rear doors.
In 2020, the Clubman got a revitalized exterior style to go with its upmarket interior. Forward collision warning now comes standard as well, adding an additional layer of protection against potential accidents. The Clubman also comes standard with rear parking sensors, a rearview camera, and automatic emergency brakes. You can add front parking sensors, adaptive cruise control, a head-up display, and parallel parking assist, making it even easier to snag those tight spots.

2. 2021 MINI Cooper
Length: 151.1 inches | $22,400
The Mini Cooper earned four out of five stars for overall safety rating from the NHTSA, but it comes with more standard advanced safety features than many subcompact rivals, including a rearview camera, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, and rear parking sensors. You can opt to add front parking sensors, adaptive cruise control, and parallel park assist as available advanced safety features
The Mini Cooper can seat four or five, depending on the configuration (the four-door hatchback seats five). In 2020, forward collision warning and automatic emergency braking were added standard, helping make driving this car a cinch.
As for cargo space, the convertible Mini Cooper has a miniscule 5.7 cubic foot trunk, which can expand to 7.6 cubic feet by folding down the rear seats. The two-door hatchback offers 8.7 cubic feet of space in the trunk, with up to 34 cubic feet with the back seats folded. The four-door hardtop model offers the most, from 13.1 to 40.7 cubic feet. Unfortunately, that is still a lot less than most rivals.

3. 2021 Chevrolet Spark
Length: 143.1 inches | $13,400
The 2021 Chevrolet Spark comes in at a miniature 143.1 inches long. Although it does offer an impressive list of standard features, good predicted reliability, and a rock-bottom price, this little Chevy makes some sacrifices when it comes to interior space. The Spark offers 11.1 cubic feet of storage in the trunk, which can open up to 27.2 cubic feet with the back seats folded down.
With responsive handling, the Spark’s maneuverability makes it easy to drive, but the diminutive second row and cargo hold are smaller than many competitors. Steering is a breeze, making it easy to park in tight spots and drive through crowded or narrow streets.

4. 2020 Chevrolet Sonic
Length: 159.8 inches | $16,720
There’s plenty of cargo room. If you go for the sedan model, you’ll find 14.9 cubic feet of trunk space, which is great for sedans. If you’re the hatchback type, there are 19 cubic feet of space behind the back seats – enough for multiple pieces of luggage – and 47.7 cubic feet with the rear row folded down.
With 159.8 inches long for the hatchback and 173.9 inches long for the sedan model, the 2020 Chevrolet Sonic is a solid, sporty subcompact car. Engaging steering helps the Sonic handle with dexterity along any winding or unexpected routes. Its interior cabin is of a considerable size, with two rows of broad seats that can comfortably fit adults.

5. 2020 Toyota Yaris
Length: 171.2 inches | $15,650
There’s an available hatchback body style for the Yaris, which is new for version 2020. The standard sedan format offers 13.5 cubic feet of cargo space in the trunk, while the hatchback model offers 15.8 cubic feet. There’s also a rear liftgate, making it easier to stash large or awkwardly shaped packages.
On the safety front, a forward collision warning and a rearview camera are standard. The NHTSA awarded the Yaris five out of five stars for overall safety, and the IIHS gave it top ratings of Good across five of six crash tests.
Great fuel economy, good predicted reliability, a stylish interior, and plenty of features are also red-letter aspects of the 2020 Yaris. The Yaris was a finalist for our 2020 Best Subcompact Car for the Money award.

6. 2020 Kia Rio
Length: 172.6 inches | $15,850
The Rio is still safe for a small car, too. The IIHS gave the Rio a score of Good in five out of six crash tests – the organization’s highest rating. When properly equipped, the Rio earned the top rating of Superior in its front crash prevention test. The Rio comes standard with a rearview camera, but only forward collision warning and automatic emergency braking are available as safety options.
The Rio’s athletic handling contributes to its sprightly and zippy driving style, and the Rio features a fetching, nicely constructed cabin – rare in small cars – with plenty of space in the front seats. The 2020 Rio runs on a four-cylinder engine paired with an automatic transmission.
In the trunk, the Rio fits 13.7 cubic feet of gear, which is about enough space for 10 grocery bags. There’s more space if you spring for the hatchback version, which offers 17.4 cubic feet of space behind the back row, with up to 32.8 cubic feet with the rear seats folded. The Rio also comes standard with 60/40 split-folding rear seats, which offer a convenient way to rearrange your interior space depending on your needs.

7. 2020 Hyundai Accent
Length: 172.6 inches | $15,295
All five seats in the Accent are spacious – even the back row can fit two adults comfortably. In the trunk, you’ll find 13.7 cubic feet of cargo space, which is enough for a few pieces of luggage. Although the trunk space may have been sacrificed a little for more seating space, the extra comfort is definitely worth it for some. The Accent saw some minor powertrain upgrades in 2020, as well as a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT), replacing the six-speed automatic transmission.
In terms of safety, the Accent does come standard with a rearview camera, but you’ll have to pay extra to get forward collision warning and automatic emergency braking.
