Detailed Information of 10 Smallest Cars In India

10. Mahindra Reva-i - 2638mm in length

The Mahindra Reva-i must be one of the smallest cars that can be seen on today’s roads, as it measures only 2638 mm long. Reva-i’s ultra-compact dimensions make a lot of sense as this tiny two-seater was intended to battle for parking spaces in urban environments.

Unlike the conventional hatchbacks which are covered in a metallic skin, the Reva-i’s body is made

of ultra light Acrylonitrile -Butadiene-Styrene. Moreover, the body is built on a modern light tubular space-frame which gives the car a curb weight of only 750 kg.

Though, despite the intensive use of modern technologies, the Reva-i’s exterior design is far from being as innovative, as once could expect. By contrary it looks plain and boring without any fancy lines to break up the monotony.

Like most of today’s electric cars, the Mahindra Reva-i is equipped with standard regenerative breaks which convert the energy used for braking into electric energy. If you aren’t used with this type of breaks, the Reva-i will feel a bit strange, because when you push the stop pedal, the electric motor will reverse the direction. The torque created by this reversal counteracts the forward momentum and eventually stops the car. Also, if you push harder the batteries will receive more energy.

9. Tata Nano - 3099mm in length

The Nano has been conceived to create a nation of drivers. In India, the transport of choice for the masses is the motorcycle, but Tata Motors think that 450,000 Nanos can be sold every year for around double the cost of a 100 or 150cc bike. The Nano makes it possible for four to travel together and in greater safety.

Creative cost-saving is evident throughout the Nano. Flat side glass, a single wiper and no tailgate, three wheelnuts instead of four and a single door lock all help to keep the price low. But although the entry-level model is spartan, the CX and LX models have air-con. Incredibly for such a cheap car, a huge range of accessories and customisation options are offered, from decal sets to bodykits and dashboard trims.

The 625cc, twin-cylinder engine develops 35bhp, but with only 600kg to carry, a 50-55mph cruise is achievable. The low weight means all-round drum brakes are all that's required. Despite the cheaper technology, the Nano has independent suspension front and rear, but is designed without anti-roll bars.

On the road, the Nano is a surprisingly decent proposition. The engine starts with a pleasant thrum, the four-speed gearbox is light and easy to use. Power is meagre, but it'll shift four big adults well enough to stay with busy traffic in town and country.

With such a small engine, fuel consumption is variable with load and speed, but 55mpg seems an easy average. The steering, not power-assisted, is light at parking speeds, and reasonably sharp. It rides well over India's terrible roads, thanks in part to tall 65 and 70 section tyres, although the whole driving experience is a bit bouncy.

Considering the fierce competition among Indian car makers, if someone decides to challenge the trend and bring out a solution of future mobility then that someone has got guts. This “someone” is Mr.Chetan Mainim who is the founder of Reva Electric Car Company.

Reva, the small electric car which was devised to be an affordable transport solution has seen different tides. It was revamped in 2004 and was launched as Revai. As a concept, critics liked the idea but then the things that went against it are its design, styling, performance and the backup infrastructure.

Calling the country’s largest SUV and tractor manufacturer an opportunist won’t be wrong at all. Mahindra and Mahindra did a very daring move by acquiring majority stakes in this electric car company in 2010. This decision proved that the Indian SUV maker is not only taking a step in favor of the environment but also has a broader and longer vision about its product line. Acquiring this company gives Mahindra a full access to the technology which can be later incorporated in its own models.

7. Maruti Suzuki 800 - 3340mm in length

Maruti Suzuki 800 became a synonymous name for cars across all homes in India.

Maruti 800 has also held the position of a status symbol for a long time. It was a basic car but what made it special was that it accomplished many goals.

This very small car started the trend of flourishing hatchbacks in India, and now, every car manufacturer wants to grasp their own version in that very segment of hatchbacks. The Maruti 800 was the bestselling small car until sometime back when Alto took over.

Though it has been discontinued in several cities, Maruti Suzuki is preparing to revive the iconic 800 in the future with its Cervo model, which is still at the consideration stage now.

Ever since Maruti Suzuki 800's arrival in 1983 as a modern-day car, this renowned hatch has played the role of India’s favourite small car. However, what this also means is that the Maruti Suzuki 80 is now two decades old.

Maruti Suzuki India Limited, earlier named as Maruti Udyog Limited, is one of the preeminent automobile manufacturers in the country. Maruti 800, designed since 1983, is marketed as a small city car that was manufactured by Maruti Suzuki India Limited. The first generation Maruti 800 (SS80) was inspired by the 1979 Suzuki Fronte and dawned an 800 cc F8B engine – the moniker that proffers the car its name. It is synonymous for being an easily affordable and dependable family car, specially made for the Indian nuclear family. Maruti Suzuki 800 falls in the price range of ₹ 1.96 - 2.37 Lakh.

The Maruti Suzuki 800 is available in six assorted and peppy colours - Superior White, Bright Red, Silky Silver, Caribbean Blue, Icy Blue, and Bright Red.

6. Maruti Suzuki Alto - 3495mm in length

The current-gen Maruti Suzuki Alto made its debut back in 2012 and in its 800cc (796cc, to be precise) avatar, has so far carried the ‘Alto 800’ name. The car has been given mild updates over the years; but this time around, it's not just small tweaks here and there. It’s got a major upgrade with the engine having been made BS-VI-compliant and the body shell enhanced to comply with latest crash-test norms – oh, and this Alto has also dropped the ‘800’ from its name.

It’s easy to think of the new-for-2019 Maruti Alto as a mere facelift. The petal-shaped headlamps, body panels, doors, boot lid and even the rear bumper have been carried forward. You can identify this as the latest iteration of India’s bestselling car thanks to its new front bumper, which gets a large air dam, replete with honeycomb-style plastic mesh. There are provisions for fog lamps but those can only be added as paid accessories. The front grille is also new and now sports a black surround. Anoraks will also note a new design for its outside mirrors.

The bigger upgrades to the car are under the skin. Maruti has strengthened the Alto’s front-end to comply with the latest crash-test norms (applicable to all cars from October 1, 2019). The new Alto is also 50mm longer than the outgoing version which measured 3,395mm. This increase in length is due to a new bumper design that helps the Alto clear the pedestrian safety regulations that come into effect on October 1, 2020. Additionally, the new Alto also gets a standard driver's airbag in all variants along with ABS, EBD, rear parking sensors, a driver and front-passenger seat-belt reminder as well as a speed alert system, which are all now mandatory safety requirements. The base Std and mid-spec LXi trims get passenger airbags as an option, while dual airbags are standard on the top-spec VXi trim.

5. Hyundai Eon - 3495mm in length

This tiny car is wrapped in some pretty sharp sheetmetal. Hyundai’s organic design language suits the Eon well, managing to make it look pricier than it really is. There are more swoops, curves, and edges here than in the Mirage. Panel gaps and intersections shame cars costing twice as much. See that rear lip spoiler? That’s pressed out of sheet metal, not plastic. Impressive. While the tiny wheels are hubcap-covered, at least the hubcaps make the pretense of looking like alloy wheels.

The interior has been lifted straight out of Hyundai’s luxury design book and shrunk to fit. While elbowroom is snug for four people, legroom is phenomenal for a car this small. the seats are the best here, with good side bolsters and firm but pliant foam. The interior fit and finish likewise trump those of the others, and despite the price, you get power front windows, a 12V power outlet, and an integrated stereo with USB and auxiliary input. There’s also an honest-to-goodness temperature gauge, some thing woefully missing from new cars costing twice as much.

While the driving ergonomics is spot-on, some of the i10’s sporting character seems to have been lost in translation. The electric steering is firm and precise, but the simple suspension setup can’t hope to match the keen turn-in and balance exhibited by its big brother. The small tires feel slippery, and tend to wander on the highway. At least braking is good, thanks to the Eon’s featherweight mass.

4. Chevrolet Spark - 3495mm in length

The 2021 Chevy Spark presents a more affordable and more fuel-efficient alternative to small crossovers. Chevy's subcompact hatchback is one of the cheapest new cars on sale, but its low price doesn't translate to low quality. The Spark's interior has nicer materials than expected and a loaded infotainment system with standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Unfortunately, the hatchback's back seat is small and cargo space is limited unless the rear seats are folded, which is a cumbersome process. While we like the manual transmission and rev-happy four-cylinder, the engine's lack of passing power is glaring at highway speeds. Still, the 2021 Spark's surprisingly refined ride and nimble handling both help its valuation versus classmates.

Every Spark has a feeble four-cylinder engine that drives the front wheels through either a five-speed manual or continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT). Thankfully, the gearless automatic manages power well without droning engine noise. While the version we tested was responsive at low speeds around town, be prepared to wait as it moseys up to higher speeds. This diminutive hatchback is definitely not designed for long road trips, but it's effective and quiet in the city. The Spark is easy to thread through slow-moving traffic, with quick lateral movements and stable motions. Its short wheelbase aids maneuverability in tight spaces without compromising ride quality. Still, the Chevy was bouncy on uneven surfaces, and the harshest bumps were barely isolated. However, rattles and road noise were more subdued than in rival economy cars. The Spark's steering felt direct and communicated the road surface to the driver's hand. It was also relaxed at highway speeds and made changing lanes easy without feeling twitchy. The firm brake pedal had strong responses that helped scrub speed quickly and consistently.

The Zen, launched in 1993, has been one of the best-selling Maruti Suzuki cars in India. Its second generation model, the Zen Estilo, was introduced in 2006. The car was very compact and easy to drive. The Zen was measured 3535mm, 1495mm and 1405mm in length, width and height, respectively.

Among these, Maruti A Star is one of the popular hatchback in its portfolio, which is available in a few variants. The company has equipped this particular trim with a 1.0-litre, K Series petrol power plant. This hatch is a perfect combination of performance, fuel efficiency, comfort and style. The car maker placed this particular hatch in the entry level segment where it is competing with the likes of Chevrolet Spark and others. One of the highlights of this particular hatch is its TECT (Total Effective Control Technology) safety feature that allows the vehicle to absorb all the energy caused in case of collision or an accident. This hatchback series is available in numerous trim levels out of which, Maruti A Star Vxi is the mid level variant. 1. Chevrolet Beat - 3640mm in length

The Chevrolet Beat came in as a breath of fresh air in 2009. It looked funky, packed in quite a bit of kit for the time and was peppy enough for the city too. Sadly, Chevrolet hasn’t done much to update the Beat over the years. Other than a minor facelift that got updated bumpers, practically everything has remained identical since launch.

The Chevrolet Beat is a nippy runabout for the city thanks to its tiny footprint and light steering. We’d pick the diesel for its superior mileage, and power.

That said, the hatchback is due for an upgrade pretty soon, which is likely to bump up its kitty of features substantially. If you need a quick little hatch for your errands, the Beat needs to be on your consideration list.
