Top 10 Cars – Smallest in The U.S

Motorists looking for a vehicle that is easy to drive – especially in narrow, urban settings or along winding, country roads – may already know that subcompact cars are some of the most nimble options. As cars continue to be built bigger (and more cumbersome to drive), it can be hard to find a vehicle with clean maneuverability and a sharp turning radius. Sometimes, a small car is simply the easiest to drive.

While they may sacrifice passenger or cargo space, subcompacts are easier to steer and maneuver, easier to park, and generally more fuel-efficient than longer, wider, and heavier vehicles. Although some small cars catch some flack for being unsafe or ultra-cramped, this is by-and-large not the case these days.

10. 2020 Nissan Versa

Length: 177 inches

Measuring 177 inches from tip to tail, the 2020 Nissan Versa is a subcompact vehicle that offers a lovely interior for a low price. Fully redesigned for 2020, this five-seater can store 14.7 cubic feet of baggage in the trunk of its base model, and 15 cubic feet in the SV and SR trims. Those are respectable numbers for the subcompact car class. The wide cargo opening and deep trunk make it easy to stash unwieldy items.

Most trims come equipped with 60/40 split-folding rear seats, making the Versa especially versatile and convenient. The Nissan is also one of the most economical subcompact cars, considering its comparatively low starting point.

As for safety, the 2020 Versa earned the highest rating of Good from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) in the two crash tests it went through. The Versa earned an overall safety rating of five out of five stars from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). These are top-notch marks, and the Versa supports them with a stack of driver-assistance aids that include pedestrian detection, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, automatic high-beams, a rearview camera, and lane departure warning – all standard.

9. 2020 Hyundai Accent

Length: 172.6 inches

Although the 2020 Hyundai Accent measures in at a mere 172.6 inches in length, it still offers occupants comfortable seating in a good-looking cabin for the subcompact cars segment.

All five seats in the Accent are spacious – even the back row can fit two adults comfortably. In the trunk, you’ll find 13.7 cubic feet of cargo space, which is enough for a few pieces of luggage. Although the trunk space may have been sacrificed a little for more seating space, the extra comfort is definitely worth it for some. The Accent saw some minor powertrain upgrades in 2020, as well as a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT) replacing the six-speed automatic transmission.

In terms of safety, the Accent does come standard with a rearview camera, but you’ll have to pay extra to get forward collision warning and automatic emergency braking.

8. 2020 Toyota Yaris

The 2020 Toyota Yaris offers a lot more than you might expect from a budget-priced car. Available in hatchback and sedan body styles, this accomplished subcompact boasts the kind of exceptional fuel economy that can save you money over the long haul. Its suspension is tuned to facilitate driver engagement, and while it isn't the quickest at the track, it feels capable in everyday driving. On a less positive note, this Toyota offers fewer driver-assistance features than some rivals. Still, it all adds up to a value proposition that's extremely compelling for shoppers who have their sights set on a small car that's economically priced.

The Yaris's cabin earns style points for its chic design, and the materials are of good quality. Most drivers should find the front seats to be reasonably comfortable, but the rear seats may be a tight fit for taller passengers. This Toyota lags behind the pack when it comes to cargo capacity. The hatchback provides 16 cubic feet of cargo space with all seats in place. That's less than rivals such as the Kia Rio hatchback (17 cubic feet). With the Yaris sedan, you'll find 14 cubic feet of room for your belongings in the trunk. The Versa sedan surpasses the Yaris in this respect, offering up to 15 cubic feet of cargo space.

7. 2021 Mini Cooper Clubman

Length: 168.3 inches

A spacious and upscale interior is one of the main draws of the 2021 Mini Cooper Clubman. The cabin is paired with the iconic zippy acceleration and brisk, athletic handling Minis are known for. Along with being fun to drive, it’s also easy to park after you’re finished carving through corners – the Clubman is a mere 168.3 inches long.

In 2020, the Clubman got a revitalized exterior style to go with its upmarket interior. Forward collision warning now comes standard as well, adding an additional layer of protection against potential accidents. The Clubman also comes standard with rear parking sensors, a rearview camera, and automatic emergency brakes. You can add front parking sensors, adaptive cruise control, a head-up display, and parallel parking assist, making it even easier to snag those tight spots.

The Clubman offers one of the largest trunks in the subcompact car segment, boasting 17.5 cubic feet behind the rear seats. Fold down the back seats, and the Clubman can swallow 47.9 cubic feet of cargo. Loading and unloading is a breeze, thanks to the Clubman’s unconventional side-swinging rear doors.

6. 2020 Honda Fit

Length: 161.4 inches

The 2020 Honda Fit, our top-ranked subcompact car, measures 161.4 inches in length – unless you go for the Sport trim, which is 161.8 inches long. The Fit’s handsome cabin is spacious, and Honda’s configurable rear Magic Seat makes for a useful, versatile cargo hold with plenty of room for hauling.

In the trunk, the Fit offers 16.6 cubic feet of cargo space, which is more than many small sedans, but less than other competing hatchbacks. With the Magic Seat folded, the Fit can fit 52.7 cubic feet of gear in the trunk.

While the Fit’s acceleration is lackluster, it gets great fuel economy. It earns between 29 and 33 mpg in the city and between 36 and 40 mpg on the highway, depending on the trim you choose. Although its only standard safety feature is a rearview camera, you can add automatic high-beams and the Honda Sensing suite, which includes adaptive cruise control, road departure mitigation, lane departure warning, lane keep assist, forward collision warning, and a collision mitigation braking system.

5. 2020 Chevrolet Sonic

Length: 159.8 inches

Measuring 159.8 inches long for the hatchback and 173.9 inches long for the sedan model, the 2020 Chevrolet Sonic is a solid, sporty subcompact car. Engaging steering helps the Sonic handle with dexterity along any winding or unexpected routes. Its interior cabin is of a considerable size, with two rows of broad seats that can comfortably fit adults.

There’s plenty of cargo room, too. If you go for the sedan model, you’ll find 14.9 cubic feet of trunk space, which is great for sedans. If you’re the hatchback type, there is 19 cubic feet of space behind the back seats – enough for multiple pieces of luggage – and 47.7 cubic feet with the rear row folded down.

On the safety front, the Sonic earned five out of five stars overall from the NHTSA and comes standard with a rearview camera. Drivers can opt to add additional safety features, including forward collision warning, lane departure warning, and rear parking sensors.

4. 2021 Hyundai Venue

Length: 159.1 inches

The 2021 Hyundai Venue is a subcompact crossover that has surprising interior space and desirable features at an affordable price. The little Hyundai's small size and agile handling make it perfect for zipping around urban areas. However, its underpowered engine and restless highway behavior make it feel slow and clumsy on Interstates. It gets noisy at highway speeds too. Every model has automated emergency braking and lane-departure warning as well as an 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Despite its budget-friendly pricing, Hyundai outfits the tiny ute with an attractive interior that looks and feels more upscale than competitors such as the Nissan Kicks and Toyota C-HR. All the aforementioned positives make the 2021 Venue a perfect choice for urbanites who aren't planning on using it for long highway trips.

Despite its small dimensions, the Venue has a roomy cabin for its size. Both the front and rear seats have ample passenger space, and the cushions in both rows are comfortable. The design isn't particularly flashy, but the interior is well assembled and bolstered by sturdy switchgear, and an attractive gauge cluster and infotainment system. A leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob are standard and the SEL trim; heated front seats and passive entry with push-button start are optional but standard on the Denim. Too bad there's no dual-zone climate control, heated steering wheel, head-up display, power-operated adjustments for the front seats, or wireless phone charging. Also, base models don't have a center armrest, and the top-of-the-line Denim model isn't available with a sunroof. Still, the Venue cabin is a pleasant place to spend time, and with the 60/40 split-folding rear seats in use, it has 19 cubic feet of cargo room. That volume increases to 32 cubes when the back seat is folded flat.

3. 2021 Mitsubishi Mirage

Length: 151.4 inches

With a city-smart size, a very competitive turning radius, and all the cargo capacity you need, the Mitsubishi Mirage is compact and spacious, perfect for adventures, errands and everything in between.

Mirage's small size and competitive turning radius make it the perfect companion for navigating narrow city streets, maneuvering sharp corners and fitting snugly into tight parking spaces.

Mitsubishi Mirage has multiple cargo configurations for optimizing your space, like folding rear seats and easy access to the available rear shelf and luggage board. If you're bringing friends, family and everyone in-between, the Mirage has you covered, with 86.2 cu. ft. of passenger volume and 17.1 cu. ft. of trunk space. Mirage has an ample 47 cu. ft of cargo space when the rear seats are folded.

Active Stability Control employs a series of sensors that constantly monitor the grip of your tires. If one of your wheels begins to slip, this handy system works with Mirage's Anti-Lock Braking to help you keep control in just about any situation.

Thanks to clever engineering and despite its short length, MINI cars have always been surprisingly big on the inside. In fact, many tall people specifically buy MINIs because it's one of the only cars they're comfortable in.

Start with an ultra-rigid body. Push the wheels all the way to the corners to maximize cockpit space - and create a wide, go-kart stance. Turn the engine sideways to create even more space and nearly perfect balance. Add premium features like a performance-tuned suspension and Dynamic Stability Control and voila. You've got a car with world-famous handling and an incredibly fun ride you'll never forget.

With ultra-nimble handling and world-class braking systems, a MINI is uniquely equipped to help you circumvent potential trouble on the road. Of course, with its strong cockpit frame, smart, dual-stage airbags and sophisticated emergency systems, a MINI is also superbly outfitted to help keep you safe and sound if trouble is unavoidable.

The engine block and cylinder head of every MINI is built with an ultra-lightweight aluminum alloy. On top of reducing the vehicle's overall weight, the aluminum alloy delivers greater thermal efficiency for engine cooling. This, in turn, enables less wasteful combustion inside the cylinders for improved performance and fuel economy.
