Detailed Information on Best Electric Cars in India

1. Hyundai Kona Electric

The Kona Electric, which was updated in early 2020 with new infotainment and active safety features, comes in two flavours. You can have one with either a 39kWh battery and 134bhp e-motor, giving a claimed 180 miles of range, or one with a 64kWh battery and 201bhp e-motor for a whopping 278 miles of WLTP range. You’ll pay around £30,000 or £36,000 respectively after the Government’s £3,000 grant, and PCP/leasing costs are very reasonable.

Looks quite a bit different to the regular Kona, which is available with straight petrol (note: not diesel) or hybrid power. No front grille, because it doesn’t need one, and reprofiled front- and rear-bumpers, new side-skirts and special 17-inch alloy wheels make it more aerodynamic than the standard car. The charge port is up front, on the left-hand side of the car below the bit of silver trim that connects the daytime running lights.

A 100 per cent charge on a 7kW home wallbox takes just under ten hours, while an 80 per cent charge on a 50kW public charger should take about 75 minutes.

2. Tata Nexon EV

Powered by a three-phase AC induction motor, this electric sedan comes in Egyptian Blue and Pearlescent White colour options. The 310-litre boot space is an additional facility that can be very handy while storing luggage.

You can expect max powers of 40bhp from this vehicle, along with peak torque of 105 Nm. Under ideal driving conditions, this car can reach speeds of 80kmph.

• Battery Capacity – 21.5kWh

• Distance per Charge – 142km/full charge

• Recharge Time – Fast charging in 90 minutes and normal charging in six hours.

• Price – Starting from Rs.9.54 lakh.

Tata Nexon EV is the brand’s first electric vehicle to feature Ziptron EV technology. Nexon EV is also the first homegrown fully electric compact-SUV. Tata claims a driving range of 312 kilometres with the Nexon EV. The home charger takes around 8 hours for a complete charge, while the fast-charging technology charges the Nexon EV batteries from 0 to 80% in just 60 mins. It also features regenerative braking to harness the power and charge the batteries while braking.

3. MG ZS EV

The electric motor is a 143bhp job, making 260lb ft from zero. That’s enough to propel it at least as briskly as a small FWD crossover needs to go. The 0-62 is 8.5sec. It feels perky without being so quick as to trouble the comparatively unsophisticated front suspension with torque steer. Or endlessly invoke the traction control.

Acceleration is smooth and as blissfully free of interruptions as single-gear EVs all are. Albeit this one sounds slightly whiny. Still, it’s far quieter than a combustion car.

The narrow tyres don’t kick up much noise, nor the body through the air. And you won’t be cruising fast because the top speed is just 87mph and if you go near that your range will melt like April snow.

• Battery Capacity – 44.5kWh

• Distance per Charge– 340km/full charge

• Recharge Time – Fast charging in 50 minutes. The normal charge takes 6-8 hours.

• Price – Starting from Rs.20.88 lakh.

4. Tata Tigo EV

Tata Tigor is a compact electric sedan from the brand. The electric vehicle offers a host of features including a 5.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system. Tigor EV features a battery range of 213 kilometres on a single charge. Tata has limited the top speed of the Tigor EV to 80kmph to get the maximum mileage. The Tigor EV arrives with two charging options: a regular charger that takes up to 12 hours to fully charge the battery, and a fast charger that juices the battery up to 80 per cent in two hours.

Battery Capacity – 21.5kWh

• Distance per Charge – 142km/full charge

• Recharge Time – Fast charging in 90 minutes and normal charging in six hours.

• Price – Starting from Rs.9.54 lakh.

A smaller body and a bevy of colour options are what define the e2oPlus from Mahindra. Although nowhere nearly as powerful as the electric SUVs in this list, it is perfect as a commute vehicle. Its 3-phase, AC Induction Motor is equipped with a lithium-ion battery, weighing 84 kg.

It can generate maximum torque and power of 70Nm and 25bhp, respectively.

• Battery Capacity – 10.08kWh

• Distance per Charge – 99.9km/full charge

• Recharge Time – 75 minutes with a fast charger and six hours with a standard charger.

• Price – Starting from Rs.7.57 lakh.

6. Mahindra e-Verito

Another Mahindra offering, the e-Verito is a sedan, unlike the e2oPlus. It is equipped with a similar AC-induction, three-phase motor.

However, this vehicle offers an immense boot space, around 510-litre, which makes it perfect for hauling large bags and equipment.

Additional features include an electro-hydraulic power steering and tubeless steel wheels. However, it is only available in a Diamond White shade.

• Battery Capacity – 21.2kWh

• Distance per Charge – 140km/full charge

• Recharge Time – Fast charging in 1 hour and 45 minutes.

• Price – Starting from Rs.10.11 lakh.
