Weirdest fashion trends for the pandemic - Photo: KnowInsiders

The pandemic ushered in a strange fashion year for 2020. With people sheltering in place and avoiding parties, dates, and celebrations, there hasn't been much need for fashion in general.

When your evenings are spent piecing together puzzles on the coffee table and ordering in from your favorite restaurants, it seems unnecessary to ever get out of sweatpants. The same goes for work attire. With millions of people working from home in an effort to stop the spread of the virus, blazers and suits have been replaced with pajama bottoms and robes.

Because of this, some pretty strange fashion trends dominated COVID-19 era.

1. Face masks

Prior to 2020, face masks were just for surgeons and characters in post-apocalyptic movies, but that all changed in March. Doctors and scientists found that wearing a face mask reduces the risk of infection by 65%, and so many of us stocked up on our own face coverings. Now the entire world is grocery shopping, running errands, and walking around town in a variety of face masks, making them our new normal. You probably never thought you would have a spot in your dresser drawer dedicated to masks, but here we are.

2. Mask Accessories

Since face masks are now a necessary part of our dressing routine, the fashion industry has quickly cranked out accessories to make the face coverings as fashionable as our OOTDs. One popular accessory are mask chains, which add a touch of sparkle or glamour to your look. They come in a variety of different styles — from gold chains to strands of pearls to chunky beads — allowing us to slightly "normalize" our new reality.’

3. Pillow Dresses

In April 2020, a new pandemic challenge emerged on Instagram that gave us an excuse to flex our creativity and get off the couch. The pillow dress trend invited people to create chic dresses out of — you guessed it — pillows! Hundreds of thousands of people stripped down, grabbed their chunkiest belts, and donned their own pillow creations. As stay at home orders kept people firmly indoors, we didn't have much of a reason to dress up during that period. The pillow dress trend was a tongue-in-cheek way to acknowledge that, while also giving us something fun to do and connect with other people.

4. Runway Spoofs

In April 2020, people got bored with baking banana bread and began looking for a new activity, and the #homecouture project fit the bill nicely. The Instagram challenge invited users to spoof outrageous couture runway looks using whatever they had laying around the house.

The challenge started when fashion journalist George Serventi decided that just because Couture season was cancelled didn't mean he couldn't experience the fashion. He grabbed a few trash bags and DIYed a Comme des Garcons dress, and the trend was born.

5. Nice Zoom Tops With Cruddy Shorts

If you're working from home right now, then you have probably done this on more than one occasion: you change into a nice top for a Zoom meeting, but keep your lounging pants on because who is ever going to know?

The situation is universal. You're working from home on the couch when your calendar reminds you that you have a meeting in a few minutes. You quickly shimmy out of your sweatshirt, put on a nice blouse, and leave your schlubby sweatpants or stretchy leggings on, knowing full well everyone else on the call is doing the same thing. Hey, you might as well make the most out of isolating, right?

No one's wearing bras or properly dressing themselves anymore, so who is surprised that a naked cardigan trend emerged in 2020? Buttoned only at the top or in the middle and worn sans shirts, it perfectly captures how we're all doing this year.

7. Slipper Shoes

Designer Molly Goddard collaborated with Ugg, and their fuzzy platform shoes perfectly capture the zeitgeist of this year. They look just like slippers, just with a runway twist.

8. Designer Hand Sanitizer

Everyone now has a bottle of hand sanitizer in their purse or car, which makes it one of 2020's most trending accessories. Because of that, beauty and wellness brands decided to make sanitizers a little less unnerving by housing them in attractive and design-conscious bottles. It became a little less scary to slather one's hands in alcohol when the sanitizer was packaged in a chic little bottle. Pretty packaging allowed us to experience a degree of separation from the reality of the situation.

9. Imposing Puff Sleeves

People were shocked when dramatic puff sleeves became a trend in 2020. They're opulent, decadent, and make a big statement — which are things most people don't have a need for as they're squirreled away at home and isolating. These are sleeves that demand Friday night dinner dates and champagne cocktails. They need candlelit dinner parties and strappy stiletto heels. So why did they become a thing?

According to some, statement tops are trending this year because of Zoom calls. All people see is the waist up, so folks want to wear something eye catching. In addition to that, the tops are also considered a form of escapism. While the world is burning outside, sometimes it's nice to check out of that reality and wear something frivolous to bring you back to a simpler time.

10. Sleepwear As Daywear

We might have gotten too used to walking around in our pajamas all day, because in October, fashion pundits noticed a new trend emerge where sleepwear was being styled as daywear. Fancy pajamas were repurposed as errand clothes; influencers found chic ways to style their lingerie as tops; and baggy shorts and T-shirts were matched with fashion-forward jackets as a way to transform them into actual outfits.

"Suddenly, the concept of being 'half-dressed' was regular on the Instagram feed, with many styling blazers sans bra with nothing but a cute pair of underwear and loafers and using their lacey bras as tops rather than items meant to be hidden. In the same vein, swimsuit tops became staples outside of water, and boxers were transformed into women’s shorts for photoshoots. Everywhere we looked, the unmentionables were being, well, mentioned," Refinery29 reported.
