Top 10 Cutest Anime Couples of all Times
Top 10 Cutest Anime Couples of all Times

You can’t have anime with only action and style. A good dose of romance has also come to define the genre. Several fan bases even watch anime only if it has interesting couples and some romantic fling-bling going on.

Anime fans far and wide have their favorite couples to watch and cheer for from their favorite shows. Whether it be because of how strong they are as a pair or just how damn cute they are when they're on screen together.

This list ranks the cutest anime couples of all time, and in some cases, the cutest anime crushes. We know there are a ton of couples missing from various romance anime on the list, but for this list we want to focus on the cutest anime couples from shonen and action/adventure anime.

The couple does not always have to have a canon relationship within the main story of the anime, either. Fans continuously root for their favorite relationships, and factors that contribute to this include the characters' chemistry, how their relationship develops, and even the angst found in their interactions. Below are the cutest and most beloved couples in anime.

10. Yona And Hak (Yona Of The Dawn)

Yona, a kind, but spoiled princess to the throne’s life completely changes one day when her cousin kills her father in cold blood on her birthday. Leaving the village with her bodyguard Hak, the two set out on an adventure to find more about the kingdoms and the reincarnation of legendary dragons. Although there are many guys in the series, Yona falls for Hak, her childhood friend who is there to protect her at any costs. Over the course of the series, they develop serious feelings for each other and become a phenomenal couple.

9. Kagome & Inuyasha (Inuyasha)

The name “Inuyasha” is at once familiar and nostalgic to anime fans. Aside from all the action and thrill, however, is the romantic subtlety between Inuyasha and Kagome that infuses the show with balance and beauty.

It’s nice to watch a mistrustful half-demon, Inuyasha, get past his trust issues and past love failures and open his heart to Kagome.

There’s a brilliant reincarnation angle in play within this excellent anime. It takes the form of Kikyo, Inu’s former love, but we do not want to spill any serious spoilers here just in case some of you are reading about Inuyasha for the first time.

Plenty of negative emotions are suffered between these two darlings before Inu gives Kago the chance she needs to prove her love for him is genuine.

The bond between these two anime couples can best be termed tortuous and complex. The way she teases him only adds to viewers’ reasons to root for this duo.

8. Miroku & Sango (Inuyasha)

Kagome and Inuyasha are not the only cute couple in the anime Inuyasha. After Kagome shatters Shikon Jewel, Kagome and Inuyasha are accompanied by Miroku and Sango on their quest to collect the pieces.

Miroku is a monk, while Sango is a demon slayer. They make quite the pair and an even more interesting group of protagonists. Eventually, Miroku and Sango fall in love, and fans appreciate their chemistry. Monks aren't traditionally fighters, so fans also find it amusing that Miroku has fallen in love with Sango, a battle-ready demon slayer.

7. Riza Hawkeye & Roy Mustang (Fullmetal Alchemist)

One of the more popular anime in recent years is Fullmetal Alchemist. As with many other forms of media, several beloved romantic couples were never confirmed as canon, but instead, fans have advocated for their relationship.

Many Fullmetal Alchemist lovers believe that Riza Hawkeye and Roy Mustang have an implied relationship, due to their chemistry and proximity to one another. Fans also love their dynamic as Roy is a military leader and Riza is one of his most trusted associates. While it never explicitly stated that they are a couple, anime lovers enjoy this trope because of the loyalty found in the relationship.

They share a different kind of bond as you would never see them saying I love you or any physical affection, but they have respect, trust, and understanding, which shows how much love they have for each other.

6. Saito And Louise (Zero No Tsukaima)

A magical academy and an even more magical romance features in the anime “Zero No Tsukaima”.

It all begins when Louise finds herself an abject failure in her magical studies. Little does she realize that her spell-based explosions are leading up to a romantic blast. She comes to be nicknamed ‘Louise the Zero’ for being so bad at what she does.

In her attempts to summon a familiar as part of her curriculum, she ends up summoning a normal Japanese boy called Saito whom she treats more like a servant than a friend.

Her terrible initial treatment of him gradually modifies into something sweeter, one where she learns to appreciate all the support and service Saito gives her. Their getting together makes for a highly anticipated moment in this anime.

5. Shirayuki and Zen Wistalia (Snow White with the Red Hair)

If high school really isn’t your scene, then this couple might just suit your fancy. It has your typical fairy tail setting where the male protagonist is a prince.

However, the female lead isn’t just some girl with daddy issues. Rather she’s an herbalist with her own goals and aspirations.

And the prince isn’t some blank slate with a good bank state. He’s actually quite the mate to whom you can relate (OK no more poems).

And if the characters are interesting individually, they become even better as a couple.

You could say this show really dwarfed the competition… sorry I had to get it out of my system.

4. Hinata & Naruto (Naruto)

The “Naruto” and “Naruto Shippuuden” series gave us plenty of action and a nice amount of lovey-dovey moments between Naruto and Hinata.

Just because this is a shounen anime series does not mean it has no room for some interesting romantic bonding. Many a tragic scene pervades this show, some of which are linked to the tension between Hinata and Naruto.

This couple fit the bill of ‘childhood sweethearts’, owing to them having grown together. They even trained as one and fought for the same causes. Like-minded couples are the best, don't you agree?

Sadly, as anyone who’s familiar with this series will agree, Naruto was often clueless about Hinata’s crush on him. Good to know that Hinata did not give up easily. Her bravery and Naruto’s adorable naiveté made for some of the most memorable romantic moments in the anime realm.

3. Misaki & Usui (Kaichou Wa Maid-Sama)

What if you had an alter ego you’d like to keep secret? Maid Sama is all about secrets and separate lives. Following Misaki Ayuzawa, the first female president at a former all-boys school, the anime focuses on the discovery of her secret life as a maid cafe worker by Takumi Usui, a popular boy. After discovering her secret, the two clash and learn more about one another. Since Misaki doesn’t fawn over Takumi’s looks, he appreciates her seeing past his handsome appearance. They soon become a couple and will make you go “aww” at the screen.

They are an odd and hilarious couple, which makes them a famous couple in the anime world. They know each other well and then fall in love knowing every flaw and positives. Their on-screen chemistry will make you go aww.

2. Minato & Kushina (Naruto)

Minato Namikazi and Kushina Uzumaki are another canon couple in the Naruto series. From the beginning of their relationship, Minato and Kushina are shown to have an interest in each other, although they both tried to ignore these feelings.

However, they eventually confess and fall in love, and their relationship is especially special in the fandom since they are Naruto's parents and give their lives to protect him. Their relationship is cute, and since it is the beginning of the life of one of the most significant characters in anime, it is also very important to the plot.

1. Winry & Edward (Fullmetal Alchemist)

Photo: tenor

Edward is only small at the beginning of FMA. And apparently, Winry isn’t interested in “small” guys in the plot-line. But all that changes. Fullmetal Alchemist is legendary for its philosophical plot and deep story. And together – Edward And Winry, the mechanic, are well-recognized.

Their interactions were always comical as Winry was the only one who could build and repair Edward's mechanical limbs. The chemistry between these two was always there albeit somewhat tense since it would seem that Edward only would stop by when he needed something. Yet it was slowly revealed that the time these two had shared as children and in the present had built up to them falling for each other more than they might've liked to admit. It all culminates in them finally revealing how they feel about each other right before he goes back on his adventure, to which now more than ever, he has someone to come back to.

Best Battle Couples In Anime

Nice Holystone And Jacuzzi Splot (Baccano!)

While Claire Stanfield and Chane Laforet are the more powerful couple, their relationship has only just begun. Nice and Jacuzzi have been wholly devoted to each other since childhood: when an accident scarred Nice's face, Jacuzzi immediately got his signature full-face tattoo so his would stand out just as much.

Nice adores explosives, keeps many on her at all times (even hiding a cherry bomb in her empty eye socket), and will gleefully deploy them. Jacuzzi, despite his perpetual tears and anxiety, is deeply courageous when his loved ones are threatened and will take on any opponent to protect them, no matter how strong they are or how bad the odds are.

Yukiteru Amane And Yuno Gasai (Future Diary)

In a survival game to decide the next God, players need either maximum brains or maximum brawn. Yukiteru is clever and observant, but out of his depth in a fight. Yuno is an axe-wielding murderer who, while quite smart, is too obsessed with Yukiteru to think too much about the world outside him. Together, they are among the most powerful anime characters to travel through time.

Their Diaries, cell phones that predict the future in various ways, also complement one another. Yukiteru's Indiscriminate Diary predicts the actions of everyone but himself, and Yuno's Yukiteru Diary predicts only Yukiteru's actions. Combining them makes it near impossible to catch the pair off guard.

Franken Stein And Marie Mjolnir (Soul Eater)

Soul Eater runs on powerful partnerships, but only one is explicitly romantically involved. Stein is DWMA's strongest Meister, who struggles against the pull of Madness. Marie is a Death Scythe with a Healing Wavelength that helps calm Madness. Together, they make an unconventional but loving couple.

Stein claims not to feel or understand love but is constantly going out of his way to protect the people he cares about and is appalled at the idea of Marie being hurt. In turn, Marie's faith in and support of Stein is stronger than even her Healing Wavelength. In the episode "Anti-Magic Wavelength - Fierce Attack, the Anger-Filled Demon Hunter?" she says of his Madness, "You don't need to fix it or destroy it. You just have to accept it as a part of you."

Shirou Emiya And Saber (Fate/Stay Night)

After they unwittingly become Master and Servant in the Fifth Holy Grail War, Shirou and Saber's relationship gets off to a rocky start. Saber claims to live for battle and only cares about winning the Holy Grail to undo her past life. Shirou is self-sacrificial to a fault and insists on throwing himself into the fray instead of commanding Saber, despite being weak and inexperienced.

As they fight other Masters and Servants and understand each other better, the pair grow closer and stronger. Shirou trains in magic and becomes more capable in battle until he is able to fight alongside Saber. Saber slowly allows herself to place her connection with Shirou over her sense of duty, letting go of the suffering the latter caused her in life.

Rukia Kuchiki And Renji Abarai (Bleach)

Soul Reapers Rukia and Renji have been thrashing their enemies together since they were children. Renji sees the "inner grace" hidden under Rukia's hot temper, and in the Soul Society arc shamelessly begs Ichigo to save her life after he (Renji) is defeated. Rukia openly tells Renji how much she appreciates his friendship, making him blush.

The ending of the manga confirms their romantic feelings by revealing that they marry and become proud parents of a daughter, Ichika. The Thousand-Year Blood War movie is one of the most anticipated anime premiering in 2022 for many reasons, and seeing this family animated is just one of them.

Sailor Uranus And Sailor Neptune (Sailor Moon)

Despite clumsy attempts at censorship in the 1990s English dub, Haruka and Michiru are inseparable partners in one of the coolest LGBT+ relationships in anime. After becoming Sailor Guardians, the two arrive on the battlefield together and battle their enemies with team attacks.

While they can be cynical and aloof, often going off on their own missions separate from the main cast, they are both driven by a powerful sense of justice. In the episode "Dying Stars: Uranus and Neptune's Last Stand," they are strong enough to resist Galaxia's mind control and clever enough to trick her into thinking they did so they can get in close enough to attack her.

Minato Namikaze And Kushina Uzumaki (Naruto)

The revelation that the Fourth Hokage and the Nine-Tailed Fox's previous jinchuuriki are Naruto's parents is one of the most shocking plot twists in Naruto. The night he was born, Obito Uchiha's sabotage unleashed the Fox and put the whole Leaf Village in danger of destruction. Minato and Kushina fought him together and ended up sacrificing their lives to fend him off and re-seal the Fox.

While Naruto and Hinata as well as Sasuke and Sakura certainly count, they only become couples at the end of the show and are not often seen actually fighting together. Minato and Kushina were together from childhood to death and were both feared and admired for their combat prowess: Minato for his speed and Kushina for her melee strength.

Ashitaka And San (Princess Mononoke)

When a valiant warrior prince and a ferocious protector of the forest meet, the formation of an unstoppable battle couple is inevitable. Ashitaka and San are not only two of the smartest Studio Ghibli protagonists but incredibly strong as well, between Ashitaka's prodigious archery skills and San's magically enhanced speed and agility.

Ashitaka is in awe of San from the start, as seen in the iconic scene in which a furious San holds a knife to his throat and all he can think to say is, "You're beautiful." San's hatred of humans means she is slow to accept Ashitaka, but by the end of the film, Ashitaka selflessly helping her defend her home has led her to respect and trust him completely.
