iPhone 15 Leaks: Prices, New Features, Design, Camera and Fold Version. Photo KnowInsiders

After launching iPhone 14 series, the Cupertino giant is reportedly working on what comes next, the iPhone 15 series. iPhone 15 is remoured to have redesigned FaceTime calling features, tools to cut down on distractions, a new notification experience, improved privacy features, and comprehensive redesigns for Safari, Weather, and Maps, among other things.

iPhone 15 Release Date

We can be reasonably confident that the iPhone 15 will launch in the first half of September of 2023. Apple has stuck almost unwaveringly to these dates for a decade now, except for the iPhone 12 launch, which was impacted by COVID-19. If we had to venture a guess at the exact date, it would be September 12, 2023, but just circle that date in pencil for right now.

iPhone 15: How much?

Photo Mac Rumours
Photo Mac Rumours

Despite rumors to the contrary, Apple didn't make any changes to its pricing for the iPhone 14 and while that doesn't rule out a price hike next year, if Apple can hold the pricing steady under the current economic and supply chain conditions, it feels unlikely that it would happen next year. If that's right then the breakdown for next year would look like this:

iPhone 15: $799

iPhone 15 Plus: $899

iPhone 15 Pro: $999

iPhone 15 Pro Max: $1,099

Pre-Order Information

You'll be able to pre-order the iPhone 15 directly from Apple's website, likely the same day it's announced or shortly after. We'll have the exact details during the Apple event that year; monitor our Next Apple Event page for more information.

iPhone 15 Design

Photo Mac Rumours
Photo Mac Rumours

The iPhone 15 might see a bigger design overhaul than the iPhone 15 Pro. In 2023, the ordinary iPhone 15 models are likely to receive the new capsule front-facing camera that is present on the iPhone 14 Pro models today. This is something Apple will want across the entire lineup, especially considering how heavily featured the “Dynamic Island” design element was in iOS 16, which transforms the capsule into more of a benefit than a hassle.

A switch to USB-C for charging being the other potential significant design change. The EU required the switch to USB-C by 2024, and while some have predicted Apple will abandon USB-C in favour of a fully wireless design, it still doesn’t seem realistic. While cable data transfer isn’t all that common these days, it is important for service and for the professional videographers that Apple loves to woo with its industry-leading video performance. Apple would need to provide a MagSafe charger in the box.

Otherwise, it appears from the most recent rumors’ that the fundamentally squared-off redesign that the iPhone 12 started will continue through the iPhone 15. That shouldn’t be surprising as Apple isn’t known for frequently changing its design aesthetic, and this style has been implemented across the entire company’s product range to overwhelmingly positive reviews.

The other potential major design change would be a move to USB-C for charging. The EU mandated the move to USB-C by 2024, and while some have projected Apple going to an entirely wireless design rather than using USB-C, that still doesn’t seem feasible. Apple would need to include a MagSafe charger in the box, and while wired data transfer isn’t incredibly common anymore, it is relevant for service and for the professional videographers that Apple likes to court with its class-leading video performance.

iPhone 15 Features

New versions of the iPhone operating system follow a similar year-after-year schedule as the iPhone. So if we count from where we are now with iOS 16, it follows that iOS 17 (assuming that's its name) will be here by the time iPhone 15 launches. Although the number sequencing is pretty straightforward, the actual features that this OS will bring are still entirely unknown at this point.

There's still a lot of time from now until late 2023, so expect more details to edge their way in as we get closer to the release. We'll keep this page updated in line with those rumors and leaks.

iPhone 15 Display Size

Apple’s strategy of offering two models with 6.1-inch panels and two with 6.7-inch displays seems to be very well established at this point. But where does advancement come from in that case?

Apple might, of course, change its mind and reevaluate the screen sizes for the iPhone 15 series. But as of right now, there is no proof to back it up. However, I think it would be interesting to see a 6.4-inch size model in the interim.

Otherwise, I believe that improvements in refresh rates, color volume, brightness, and energy efficiency are to be expected. Things that don’t sound particularly interesting but have a positive impact on daily life.

With the new rumors about iPhone 15 being released and what we expect to see, here are everything we need to know about this upcoming ...

Is iPhone 15 having a notch?

Many people anticipated that the notch, the now-almost-classic black-out area top and centre of the screen where the cameras are placed, would be ejected for a new design when Apple introduced the iPhone 14 series. Although not for the iPhone 14 and 14 Plus models, that was partially the case.

The new floating notch, or Active Island as Apple prefers to call it, was instead added to the iPhone 15 Pro and 14 Pro Max. The phrase may sound a little pompous, but Apple is actually onto something here: its iOS software can animate sizable black-background sections out from this space, giving the impression that it is wholly deliberate and serving as a purposeful “island” space to engage with.

We suspect the iPhone 15 and 15 Plus will take benefit of this new design idea, leaving the notch as it was known as a thing of the past. Even the lower-end iPhone models, i.e. the iPhone SE, have a full bar that creates a much larger top bezel.

iPhone 15 Specs

The only spec update of note so far regarding the iPhone 15 is about the A17 Bionic processor. While that name could change, the rumor is that this will mark the move to a 3-nanometer chip for Apple’s A-series processor, which points to a more significant performance bump than a typical year-on-year update. Given that Apple just moved to a 4-nanometer chip with the A16 found in the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max this year, the company is moving pretty fast.

Projections are for roughly a 10-15% boost to performance, but perhaps more exciting is up to a 30% reduction in power consumption, which, if Apple sticks to at least the same battery sizes, could cement them at the top of the list for the phones with the best battery life.

Under-display fingerprint sensor

We may see Apple finally adopt an under-display fingerprint sensor. While Face ID remains well ahead of facial recognition in the Android competition, the lack of a fingerprint sensor on the modern iPhone is problematic at times with the Covid-19 pandemic highlighting that issue. To be fair, though, Apple rectified this issue by making its masking-wearing users more recognizable on Face ID.

Apple 5G Modem

Photo Mac Rumours

Apple's troubled history with modems has led the company to build its own. When Intel exited the modem business, Apple purchased it from under them.

In the interim, Apple has used Qualcomm to provide 5G modems to the iPhone. However, this partnership may be short-lived as Apple is expected to use its modems in 2023.

Apple likes to control its device experience top to bottom, and including the modem in that stack may benefit the user. Not only will it be cheaper to use in-house modems, but Apple will also be better able to integrate modem technology into its custom Apple Silicon.

Wireless

Photo Mac Rumours

Another significant change we could see is an all-wireless iPhone. In late 2021, the European Commission proposed USB-C as the go-to port for smartphones, and then in mid-2022 solidified the decision. European lawmakers will make it mandatory starting in 2024, meaning Apple will need to do away with the Lightning connector that's been the standard on iPhones.

This change wouldn't be groundbreaking considering Macs and most iPads have them, but it could be what pushes Apple to make the iPhone completely wireless. Or, maybe they'll stick to USB-C (though, maybe for only part of the lineup). Only time will tell how this pans out.

iPhone 15 Cameras

A new camera system could be used on the "iPhone 15" to enable more optical zoom. The iPhone could have a much longer zoom by utilizing a folding camera system within the device to put more space between the lens and the sensor. It isn't clear if this would replace Apple's existing Telephoto lens or add a fourth lens with this capability.

While the iPhone 14 Pro can zoom to 3x, a 77mm equivalent, that isn't too distant a zoom. The 77mm focal length is great for portraits or getting closer to a relatively close subject, but it still isn't enough for wildlife photography or sporting events. Those situations require much longer lenses to capture the subject.

Samsung utilizes periscoping and algorithms to enable clear capture of subjects at 100x magnification. Thanks to the long lens hidden away within the phone's body, this is possible. Apple has been testing such a lens for future iPhones, but it isn't clear if or when it will be implemented.

According to supply chain reports released in April 2022, multiple manufacturers have been tapped to produce components needed for a periscope camera system. The components are allegedly on order for use in the "iPhone 15."

"iPhone 15 Fold"

The foldable market is new and still fighting many problems associated with the technology. From creased displays to poorly optimized software, it is still early days. Apple doesn't enter a market until it can ensure the usual quality the company proudly promotes.

An "iPhone Fold" could arrive in 2023 as an ultra-premium in the "iPhone 15" lineup. It would be Apple's most expensive iPhone to date, likely sitting around $1,500 for the base model.

Patents show Apple has worked hard to develop technology specific to folding devices. They range from new hinge technology to folding batteries and bendable displays.
