Gardening has a timeless quality, and anyone can do it: young and old, singles or groups, the fit and infirm, urban and rural. An elderly lady in a Manhattan apartment can plant new annuals in her window box. Families can rake leaves in their back yard. Freehikers can pull invasive weeds along their favorite stretch of trail. More daring groups can make rapid clothes-free sorties into public parks to do community-friendly stealth cleanups.
What is World Naked Gardening Day?
Every year on the first Saturday in May, gardeners are encouraged to shed their clothes and tend their gardens naked, just as nature intended.
The free-spirited proponents of naked gardening are usually nudists. But it’s not just other nudists that are encouraged to garden in the buff. It’s anyone who desires to experience a stronger bond with nature. This could be entire families, couples, gardening clubs, or a group of friends. And the gardens can be anywhere in the backyard, the park, or inside the home. Additionally, naked gardeners are encouraged to share their stories with others. If they choose to share their photos, it’s a good idea to have private parts covered with foliage, gardening tools, or other fun props.
There are many benefits of naked gardening. Some of these benefits include:
- It’s doesn’t cost anything.
- It’s a fun and freeing activity.
- It ties people to the natural world.
- Gardening is good for the environment.
- It allows humans to be honest with who they are

So what should you do? First of all, on the first Saturday of May, find an opportunity to get naked and do some gardening. Do so alone, with friends, with family, with your gardening club, or with any other group collected for that purpose. Do it inside your house, in your back yard, on a hiking trail, at a city park, or on the streets. Stay private or go public. Make it a quiet time or make it a public splash. Just get naked and make your part of the botanical world a healthier and more attractive place.
Secondly, tell someone about your experience. No one owns this event, so it does not really matter whom you tell, but tell someone. Tell your friends about your day of naked gardening; write down what you thought of it and email it to your local newspaper; post your thoughts and images onto an Internet site; submit stories and photos to your club newsletter, as reported by WNGD.
Some of our most prominent political leaders are totally on board with World Naked Gardening Day
President Barack Obama. "Once we discard the trappings of clothing, we see that people are just plain folks," says the President. "We need to focus on things we have in common that bring folks together and gardening naked is one. Count me in."
World Naked Gardening Day has no political agenda. Thus, it garnered widespread support from Democrats, Republicans, Libertarians, Tea Partiers, and Rush Limbaugh.
Kentucky Senator Mitch McConnell gives naked gardening the thumb's up. "We're all about horses in the Bluegrass State," says Mitch, "and gardening naked makes me feel like a stud."
Political endorsements just keep coming. Here's an exchange Grumpy overheard last week in the nation's capital.
ice-President Joe Biden: "So, Sarah, I hear you'll be 'letting your hair down' on World Naked Gardening Day."
Sarah Palin: "You can see me from my house!"
A Word of Caution Whether with your friends or all alone, gardening naked has its risks. First of all, men should keep their distance from hedge trimmers, shears, pruners, saws, scythes, and even weed whackers. Secondly, May marks the beginning of tick season in many areas of the world. So be sure someone spends at least 20 minutes giving you a thorough inspection following your naked day in the garden, according to Southernliving.
