Who was David Geffen? Owner of $85 Million Malibu Mansion Burns Down in Palisades Fire
The property, originally built on an estate formerly owned by Doris Day, was sold by Geffen in 2017 for a record-breaking $85 million to Mark Walter, CEO of Guggenheim Partners and owner of the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Now the property has been charred and destroyed, with the garage facade seen decimated by the flames |
Geffen, who acquired the property in 1983, had faced legal battles over public access to Carbon Beach. Initially resisting the construction of a public pathway, he eventually relented after a three-year court case, a dispute that became known as the "most famous Malibu beach battle."
While many of the walls appear to be still standing, they are blackened from the flames with many parts of the home still on fire |
Now, the mansion on Billionaire's Beach, home to celebrities like Leonardo DiCaprio and Courteney Cox, has been reduced to charred remains. Images show the property’s garage facade destroyed and walls blackened by flames, although some parts of the structure remain standing. The extent of the damage is still being assessed, but the mansion was clearly not spared.
The Palisades Fire, driven by 99 mph winds, has consumed over 15,000 acres, forcing mass evacuations and claiming the homes of many celebrities, including Miles Teller, Anthony Hopkins, and Paris Hilton. It is one of several blazes ravaging Southern California, with others like the Eaton Fire and Lidia Fire causing further devastation.
