Political Views
Some Republicans thought the gunman might have been acting on President Joe Biden's orders. Sen. J.D. Vance (R-OH), who is said to be at the top of Trump's list of possible running mates for vice president, said the president was to blame "directly."
However, according to a voter-registration record, he was listed as a registered Republican. Crooks had not been attending the rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.

According to The Tribune-Review in western Pennsylvania, he was also granted a "star award" of $500 that year by the National Math and Science Initiative.
The New York Times used a video from a graduation ceremony in 2022 to show Crooks getting his high school diploma to cheers. Crooks with glasses is seen in a black graduation gown and posing with a school official in a video from that event that was posted online.

Matthew Crooks, 53, Crooks' father, told CNN that he was seeking to understand "what the hell is going on" and would not talk about his son until he had talked to police.
Crooks' family home was in a district that President Biden won by 52% of the vote to Trump's 46% in 2020. Crooks' dad is a Libertarian and his mom is a Democrat at the same time.

Former friends who talked to the media painted a picture of a social outcast who stayed out of the spotlight.
Sarah D'Angelo, a classmate, told the media, "He didn't really fit in with everyone else." Another classmate told the media, "He was there, but I can't think of anyone who knew him well."
Jason Kohler, a classmate, said that Crooks was "lonely" and "would sit alone at lunch." It was common for him to wear camouflage clothes, and he was "bullied" for it, Kohler said.
"People talked about how he looked a little different," said a classmate who did not want to be named. "almost a retro nerd vibe."
Summer Barkley, a different classmate, said that Crooks "always got good grades on tests" and loved history a lot.
A different classmate, Zach Bradford, told the New York Times that Crooks was "incredibly intelligent" and that he seemed to have "slightly right-leaning" views in high school.
Some of Crooks' peers didn't believe he had anything to do with the shooting at the Trump rally.
D'Angelo told the Wall Street Journal, "He never talked about his political views or how much he hated Trump or anything else in public."
CNN spoke to an anonymous classmate who said, "I was just shocked—I just couldn't believe he did something that bold because he was such a quiet and private person."
"He was definitely nerdy," Mark Sigafoos, a classmate, told CBS. "But he never gave off the vibe that he was creepy." "He didn't look like he would hurt a fly."
Grooms, who graduated a year after Crooks, told the Wall Street Journal that Crooks stood out because he was so awkward. She said, "If someone spoke to him, he would just stare at them." "He was the kid who was known to shoot up high school," they said.
Social Media
Crooks was said to not be very active on social media, but a spokesperson for the platform Discord said that the company "identified" a "rarely utilized" account that seems to be linked to Crooks.
