As per the Iranian constitution, in the event of the president's demise or incapacitation, the first vice president assumes the presidential duties and holds them until an election is called within a maximum of 50 days.

Following the death of President Ebrahim Raisi in a helicopter crash in the northwest of the country on May 20, Iran's first vice president, Mohammad Mokhber, was named acting president of the Islamic Republic.

The 68-year-old Mr. Mokhber has mostly remained hidden from view, unlike other politicians in Iran's Shia theocracy .Due to Raisi's death under the constitution, Mr. Mokhber became well-known. It is anticipated that he will act as acting president for approximately fifty days prior to Iran's obligatory presidential elections.

Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the supreme leader of Iran, revealed Mr. Mokhber's appointment in a message of condolence following Raisi's May 19 crash death. On May 20, the helicopter was discovered in northwest Iran.

Following his inauguration in August 2021, Mr. Mokhber was named first vice president by Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi. Since the amendment of the Iranian constitution, Mr. Mokhber is the seventh person to occupy that position.

Mokhber: A Career in Politics

Prior to being named vice president, Mr. Mokhber led Setad, a significant economic organization that primarily concentrated on humanitarian endeavors, for 14 years.

A Reuters investigation found that Iran's supreme leader, whose wealth is estimated to be in the tens of billions of dollars, directly controls Setad.

At the height of the pandemic, Setad developed Iran's own Covid-19 vaccine, Coviran Barekat, under the direction of Mr. Mokhber. The efficacy of the vaccination is still debatable, though, as there have been numerous reports of individuals developing serious side effects.

He served as an officer in the medical corps of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps during the Iran–Iraq War. He has held positions as the deputy governor of Khuzestan Province, the chairman of the board at Sina Bank, and the head of the Execution of Imam Khomeini's Order (EIKO).

High-ranking IRGC officials and a representative of the Supreme National Security Council sent him to Moscow in October 2022 to finalize a deal for the transfer of surface-to-surface missiles and Shahed drones to Russia to support the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Muhammad Mukhbar, the president of Setad (Execution of Imam Khomeini's Order), was added to the European Union's list of individuals and organizations that it sanctioned in July 2010 due to their purported involvement in "nuclear or ballistic missile activities." This sanction took effect two years later and took Mukhbar off the list.

Mr. Mokhber has maintained a low-key public persona, but he has held important positions in the nation's power structure, especially in its bonyads, or charitable foundations. Donations and assets seized following Iran's Islamic Revolution in 1979, especially those formerly connected to the country's shah or his administration, provided impetus for these groups.
