The 63-year-old Mr. Raisi oversaw Iran's judiciary before. In 2017, a more moderate cleric named Hassan Rouhani defeated him in the presidential race.

After Iran's vetting system prevented all of his well-known prospective rivals from running, Mr. Raisi decided to run again in 2021. Almost 62 percent of the 28.9 million votes went to him.

Mr. Raisi was penalized by the US Treasury Department in 2019 for offenses involving the punishment of inmates.

In his capacity as president, Mr. Raisi promoted strict policies toward the West and enriched the nation's uranium to a level that is comparable to that of weapons manufacture.

In response to the attack on the Iranian Embassy in Syria, which Israel claimed was the cause of the attack, Mr. Raisi also backed the use of more than 300 drones and missiles to launch a massive attack on Israel in April of last year.

Mr. Raisi was also in favor of the security services suppressing the protest movement violently, particularly in the wake of Mahsa Amini's 2022 death.

Months of using harsh tactics against protestors resulted in over 500 deaths and over 22,000 arrests.

A panel of UN investigators concluded in March of this year that Amini's death was the result of "physical violence" perpetrated by Iran, following her arrest for failing to wear the government-mandated headscarf.

Raisi is wed to Jamileh Alamolhoda, who is the daughter of Ahmad Alamolhoda, the imam of the Friday prayers in Mashhad. She is president of the Shahid Beheshti University's Institute of Fundamental Studies of Science and Technology in addition to being an associate professor there.

She was hired as an associate professor in the Department of Leadership and Educational Development at Shahid Beheshti University's School of Educational Sciences and Psychology. She is a professor at Shahid Beheshti University, where she teaches doctoral courses in subjects like educational views, philosophical schools, anthropology of Islam, teaching methodologies, and theoretical underpinnings of educational management.

Alamolhoda oversaw the Humanities Research Institute as its director. She is the director of Shahid Beheshti University's Institute of Fundamental Studies of Science and Technology, which she founded in 2013.
