These diversionary tactics could be an attempt to soften criticism of her profile-raising endeavors.

The incident caused controversy because it happened after the unrest that followed Mahsa Jina Amini's death in September 2022. It was also criticized for the impact it had overall and for allegedly having high organizing costs.

According to some observers, the conference was a planned move to improve Alamolhoda's standing. The Islamic Republic's core constituency served as the primary audience in this sense. Given that this occurred during a tense period in Tehran, it was extremely significant. The Raisi government was coming under increasing international pressure for its suppression of women and the anti-establishment demonstrations that Amini's passing had instigated.

In light of this, Alamolhoda seems to want to become a well-known public figure, akin to US presidents' spouses. Notably, she has praised the memoirs of former first lady Michelle Obama and stated that she would like to write a book along those lines. Raisi supposedly agreed with this viewpoint.

"We support women staying women. What makes us similar to men? Why are we supposed to live, work, or study like men? This is violent in some way," she declared.

When asked about Mahsa Amini's state-inflicted murder, she claimed that the public's focus on the 22-year-old girl's death was a result of "fake media hype."

Since the start of anti-government protests in September, Iranian security forces have shot and killed over 500 civilians, injured thousands, and detained 22,000 people. "Death to the Dictator (Khamenei)" was one of the demonstrators' primary catchphrases.

"Unfortunately, by calling (Ali Khamenei) a dictator, they used a fake victory to disrespect our spiritual father and the leader of our revolution," the first lady said.

"He [Khamenei] has shown kindness and love to everyone, but the media called him a dictator."
