Mason Mount: Early Life

Mason Tony Mount was born in Portsmouth, Hampshire. His father, Tony, was a former non-league footballer who later coached local clubs, namely Havant Town.

As a child, Mount played in local leagues; in 2003, at age 4, he spent one day a week training in the academies at Portsmouth and Chelsea. Citing Frank Lampard, Luka Modrić and Andrés Iniesta as his favourite players, Mount eventually joined Chelsea in 2005.

Growing up, Mount had an insatiable thirst for football despite the family asking him to focus more on education. Surprisingly, the English player managed to do well in school as well as football.

Eventually, Mount’s dream would come to fruition when the English made a competitive debut for the London-based club. Similarly, the surreal moment came after 14 years when he initially signed as a six-year-old.

In order to get his son to leave Chelsea because since John Terry no other player from the Chelsea Academy has played in the first team, Tony Mount called a family meeting where uncles, aunts, and grandparents all offered the younger Mount advice to leave the club, but he insisted he was going nowhere.

2. He was named Mason by his mother, which means “man of stone”.

3. Born in Portsmouth, he was raised in a family that supports Portsmouth, although it is Chelsea that he will later come to love.

4. At the time Mount was invited to play for Derby, Steven Gerrard was also interested in having him play for Rangers.

Mason Mount started his professional career at the 2017-18 season with Vitesse Arnheim's first team. In total, Mason Mount scored 13 goals and provided 10 assists in 39 games for Vitesse across all competitions. At the end of his debut professional season, Mason Mount was chosen as Vitesse best player of the year.

Loan spell at Derby County

His excellent performances attracted the interest of Frank Lampard, who was experiencing his managerial debut season with Derby County at the Championships.

Mount joined Aston Villa in 2018. He scored on his debut for Derby in a 2–1 away win against Reading. Mount was a key member for Derby County secured as they sealed promotion to the Premier League after defeating Leeds United at the play-offs.

In total, Mount scored 11 goals and assisted 6 times in 44 games for Villa. His best performance was against Bolton Wonderers when he scored a hat-trick and kept his team in contention for the play-off.

Returning to Chelsea

Frank Lampard assignment by Chelsea was a perfect chance for Mason Mount to return to his boyhood club. Mount returned to Chelsea at the beginning of the 2019-20 season. He debuted in a 0–4 defeat to Manchester United in the Premier League. He scored his first goal the following week against Leicester City.

Since the arrival of Timo Werner, Hakim Ziyech and Kai Havertz at the beginning of the 20-21 season, Mount has faced stiff competition to get to the starting line-up. Still, he has managed to scored 3 goal and provide 6 assists in 25 games for Chelsea so far into the season.

His best two games of the season so far were in back-to-back games in January, first in a 4–0 win at Morecambe in the third round of the FA Cup and then away to Fulham in a 1–0 Premier League victory. The Blues ended the first half of the season at the eighth place.

Mason Mount represented England's youth teams from U-15 to U21. He was called up to the senior team by Gareth Southgate before the 2018 World Cup, but eventually failed to make the final squad.

Mason Mount made his debut for the England senior team in September of 2019. He came on as a substitute in England's 4–0 home win over Bulgaria at the UEFA Euro 2020 qualifying. He scored his first international goal on 17 of November, in a 4–0 away win against Kosovo in UEFA Euro 2020 qualifying.

Style of Play

Mount has been praised for his goal scoring instincts as well as his speed and passing qualities. Although his main position is the attacking midfielder, the youngster can also perform in any of the three forward positions. During his career, Mason Mount has played 116 games as an attacking midfielder, 41 games as a central-midfielder, and 3 games as a right midfielder. He has also played a total of 14 games as a left and right winger.

Mount is an excellent free-kick taker. He once revealed the secret to his skill in an interview with the Guardian.

“A free-kick is a very tough technique and it’s something I’ve always worked on. Watching David Beckham and Ronaldo scoring all these free-kicks, I was in awe. I’ve worked on it for a very long time. It doesn’t always come off. It’s a very difficult technique, but when they do it feels brilliant.”
