Nitika Kaul Dhoundiyal: Biography, Career, Personal Life

The widow of the Indian Army officer, Major Vibhuti Shankar Dhoundiyal, who was killed fighting terrorists in Pulwama in February 2019, donned olive green as she was commissioned into the Indian Army.

Nitika Kaul passed out from the Officer’s Training Academy in Chennai, Tamil Nadu on Saturday and is now commissioned as a Lieutenant in the Indian Army.

Her husband, Major Vibhuti Dhoundiyal was part of an operation in Pinglang area of south Kashmir’s Pulwama on the trail of those behind the Pulwama attack that killed 40 CRPF soldiers.

While the forces were successful in neutralising JeM commander Kamran, one of the key plotters of the Pulwama attack on the CRPF convoy, Major Dhoundiyal along with three others were killed in the attack. For his valour, he was decorated with the Shaurya Chakra.

Nikita Kaul is part of a Kashmiri Hindu family who was dragged out of their homes decades ago. The family had to move out and she found her new home in Delhi. She met Major Vibhuti and fell in love with him. She married Vibhuti Dhoundiyal and became Nikita Kaul Dhoundiyal.

Just after 10 months of their love marriage, Major Vibhuti sacrificed himself in Pulbama terrorist attack. She left Kashmir because of the terrorism and then got hit back again. Instead of being broken, She gathered herself and became stronger.

She decided to join the Indian Army like his husband. In the year 2020, she cleared the SSC exam and SSB interview. After that, she waited for the announcement of the merit list. The result came and she got selected. She completed her training from OTA Chennai and cleared all remaining formalities.

On 29 May 2021, Whole of India was proud and tears when she finally joined the Indian Army and became Lieutenant Nikita Kaul Dhoundiyal. Every one of us should learn from her love, courage, and dedication.

Nikita met Vibhu in Delhi and they fell in love with each other. They got married with traditions and planned trip to Uttarakhand.

After their trip, Major went for duty and got martyred there. When she found out about this, she was in a train from Dehradun to Delhi.

She kept herself together and reached to his in-laws. She showed strength and whispered in Vibhuti’s ears that how everyone is proud of him. She also said that “you loved the nation more”.

After that, She cleared SSC and SSB interview and joined the Indian Army as a Lieutenant on 29th May 2021.

A tribute to Pulwama Hero: Nikita Kaul, the wife of Pulwama Martyr Major Vibhuti Dhoundiyal, followed the footsteps of her husband as she donned the Indian Army uniform. Commander of the Army's Northern Command Lt. Gen Y.K. Joshi piped stars on her shoulders at a ceremony held at the Officers Training Academy in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. With this, Nikita Kaul is now Lt. Nikita Kaul.

Nikita Kaul's decision to join the Indian Army has garnered wide praise. While some are calling it a 'befitting tribute to her late husband' others are terming it as a 'truly inspirational story'.

After joining the Indian Army, Nikita Kaul said that it is her way of paying tribute to her husband Major Vibhuti Shankar Dhoundiyal. In an emotional statement, Nikita said, "I've experienced the same journey he has been through. I believe he's always going to be part of my life."

"I took my own time to recover from the major loss and the decision to sit for the Short Service Commission examination happened gradually. Just filling the form in September last year was a big decision. But I had decided that I want to walk on a similar path like my husband," Nita Kaul while explaining her decision to join the Indian Army.

Vowed to Join the Indian Army

Major Vibhuti Dhoundiyal who was martyred in the 2019 Pulwama Attack was awarded Shaurya Chakra posthumously in 2019 for his supreme sacrifice to the nation. Soon after this, his wife, Nikita Kaul, vowed to join the Indian Army.

Within six months of her husband's demise, she started preparing for Short Service Commission (SSC) examination. In 2020, she cleared her Short Service Commission (SSC) examination along with the interview. Nikita Kaul passed out of the Officers Training Academy on 26 May 2021.

Farewell to Major Vibhuti Dhoundiyal

While bidding farewell to her husband Major Vibhuti Shankar Dhoundiyal, she said, "You said you loved me, but the fact is you loved the nation more. I am really proud. We all love you. The way you love everyone is entirely different because you sacrificed your life for the people who you may have never met, but still you decided to give your life for them. You are such a brave man. I am very honoured to have you as my husband. I'll love you till my last breath. I owe my life to you."
