What are stock exchange hours?

Trading times on the stock market vary depending on the exchange and location. The NYSE and NASDAQ, which are open from 2.30 pm to 9 pm (UTC), are frequently mentioned when discussing the stock market.

The 'normal' trading hours for shares are during these hours, but there is activity outside of these hours as well. Monday through Friday, pre- and post-market trading is typically available on stock exchanges. These sessions differ from regular hours in that buyers and sellers are connected directly through electronic communication networks during these times instead of going through brokers or trading companies.

The majority of share trading will take place Monday through Friday, five days a week. On Saturdays and Sundays, there are no regular trading hours for stocks. Therefore, if you hear or read about stocks rising or falling over the weekend, it's most likely due to stock futures, which start trading at 11 p.m. Sunday (UTC).

The Tokyo Stock Exchange plans to extend the trading day by 30 minutes, the first change to cash equity trading hours in more than a decade.

The market would close at 3:30 p.m. local time if the proposed changes are implemented. The changes are planned at the same time as a large upgrade of its trading systems in the second half of the fiscal year ending March 2025, Japan Exchange Group Inc., which operates the exchange, said in a statement.

Trading hours in Tokyo are among the shortest in the world,” said Akira Kiyota, the chief executive officer of Japan Exchange. The effect of extending hours would be seen when volume was heavy, he said, even if transactions might not be immediately increase after the change.

The Tokyo bourse currently trades between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. local time, with a lunch break between 11:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. The five-hour trading day is considerably shorter than many other regional rivals. Japan is the world’s third-largest stock market with a total market capitalization of about $6.8 trillion, according to Bloomberg-compiled data.

Kiyota also said that he wasn’t currently thinking of getting rid of the lunch break, a move that had earlier been speculated, or adding a night session.

Is there any criticism to the Tokyo Stock Exchange (TSE)?

Some market participants have complained that over the years the TSE has become too large and complicated compared to other global exchanges. The TSE consists of five sections. The first section lists Japan's biggest companies and the second section lists medium-sized companies. Combined, these two sections are called the "main markets."7

Then there are two sections dedicated to startups. These sections are called the "Mothers" (Market of the High-Growth and Emerging Stocks) and the Jasdaq (which is separated further into standard and growth sub-sections). The final section is the Tokyo Pro Market, which is for professional investors only.7

To complicate matters, each of these TSE sections has its own listing requirements. As of Sept. 14, 2021, the first section alone included about 2,190 companies, almost double the level from 1990.18 A plan to reform the TSE includes simplifying the criteria separating the sections and reducing the number of sections to three—Prime, Standard, and Growth. Another possible change includes increasing the market cap requirement to reduce the number of companies listed in the top tier.
