What Is Boyfriend Bob: Top 30 Most Beautiful Bob Haircuts For Summertime
What Is Boyfriend Bob: Top 30 Most Beautiful Bob Haircuts For Summertime In 2022 |
Boyfriend bob is a short, pointed bob that is above or just below the chin, with or without bangs. The "boyfriend" version differs from the classic bob in that it is less symmetrical, does not have a distinctive longer side, and is shorter at the back of the neck. Boyfriend bob shows a youthful and dynamic temperament but still no less feminine.
Boyfriend bob is suitable for all face shapes and is one of the easiest haircut to style.
Not only effectively concealing flaws, boyfriend bob also gives you a super cute beauty when combined with fashion dyes.

What is “Boyfriend Bob” Haircut?
The "Boy Bob" haircut is looser, less "done" interpretation of a chin-length to collarbone-length bob where the natural texture of the hair is allowed to come through. It's a bob haircut, but it's a somewhat messy, natural bob.
This haircut is sometimes referred to as the "boyfriend bob" or even "boyish bob", taking it's name inspiration from its resemblance to a men's 1990's "curtains" haircut, only a little bit longer. Despite the name, there really isn't anything boyish about the cut.
While the boy bob hairstyle is meant to be wash and wear with natural texture, it can also be worn straight or with a soft wave.
The Boyfriend Bob is the Coolest Cut in Summer
Derriere-sweeping mermaid hair may be picking up momentum, along with long, beautiful, beachy waves to shake through the summer. But, the boyfriend bob looks set to steal the top spot as the most popular chop of 2022. Because, when it comes to practical, effortless and cool cuts, let's be honest, the bob still can't be beaten.
In fact, the bob style has just taken the crown as the most popular in the world with 222,580 average monthly searches! This was followed by the bun (85,890 average monthly searches) and in third place, bangs/fringe (85,830 average monthly searches). The bob is the most popular hair look in 52 countries including the U.K., USA, Belgium, and Germany. Whoa!
Celebs like Kaia Gerber, Kim K and Dua Lipa, have all proven in recent months that the bob can be modern, refreshing and a little bit sexy (see the sliced bob and blunt bob for reference). As it goes, peekaboo necks are a sophisticated and sultry way to show a little more skin. Just take a look at Laura Harrier's jaw-skimming length – so damn sexy, right?
"Think of it as a square outlined, shorter, blockier bob," explains Adam Reed, UK Editorial Ambassador for L’Oréal Professionnel. "It’s so flattering, wearable and totally changeable depending on your personal style."
Adam explains that it can be worn smooth and sleek for that sharp, clean cut look, or much edgier with added texture for a messier look. "Have a conversation with your stylist and they will be able to guide what will suit you best, taking into consideration your face shape, how you style day to day and so on. If you have an image in mind then a photo is always helpful too."
To really give the hairstyle some 'oomph', Adam's absolute go-to product for all variations of this look is L’Oréal Professionnel TECNI.ART Pli, which he says you should spritz onto damp hair before drying for that extra grip and mould.
For added texture, he recommends trying a root-boosting dust, which you can sprinkle at the roots for extra height and then take down to the mid length and ends for that beachy look. For something a little more sleek, run a serum through the mid lengths and ends that need a little more love.
So for an easy, breezy cut with tons of attitude, the boyfriend bob is definitely next on our list.
How do you style a boy bob hairstyle?
There are various ways to style and wear the boy bob.
For a wet look:
Add some styling gel to wet, damp, or partially dried hair to give the cut some shape while at the same time allowing your natural, undone, hair texture to come through. Slick it back a bit in to a relaxed wet look style.
For a wavy finish:
After cleansing and conditioning, add a sea salt spray from roots to tips and allow to air dry. Once completely dry, touch up tendrils with a texturizing spray to add volume and movement.
For curls:
For naturally curly hair, add a leave-in conditioner and curl cream to damp hair. Once your hair is dry, you may want to touch it up with a small curling iron if desired. To define the texture, add a bit of shine spray.
What styling products should you be using?
Texturising products are a must, according to Reed. His favourite? L’Oréal Professionnel Tecni.ART Pli Thermo-Modelling Spray ($27.95 at MECCA) for extra grip during styling.
A root-volumising powder, such as Davroe Cloud Texture Powder ($26.95 at Adore Beauty) also comes in handy for amping up the drama of your boyfriend bob when applied at the roots, or giving that beachy texture by massaging the product through mid-lengths and ends of the hair.
For a more polished finish, opt for a nourishing, shine-enhancing hair serum like Kérastase Elixir Ultime Beautifying Hair ($65 at Adore Beauty) through mid-lengths and ends.
How to look after your boyfriend bob hairstyle and bob haircuts
Kerry Cape, hair care and colour expert at Naturtint says: 'A bob can suit most hair types and most face shapes, however, when choosing to have a bob there are a few things to take into consideration.'
The first being: 'Face shape! A 'Lob' which is a longer bob, is best suited to those who have a square or a long face, so choose to have slightly shorter layers around the front to soften the face. This is a very easy style to maintain and works well with hair that has natural movement.
'After shampooing and conditioning the hair apply a golf ball size of styling mousse — I use Naturtint Styling Mousse, £10.99, Holland & Barrett — and leave to dry naturally. Then run your fingers through the hair once dry.'
To try and keep your choppy, one-length bob sharp and blunt, 'have a trim every 3-6 weeks.' says Kerry.
And if you want to keep it super shiny apply 'Naturtint's Anti-ageing CC Cream to the hair before styling. This will enhance the shine of the hair and provide protection against heated appliances, which are generally required for a choppy bob.'
Wash regularly
Shorter hairstyles require more washing than longer locks, as they become greasy much more quickly. You may not need to wash every day, but most short styles will become limp if you don't wash regularly. Invest in a moisturising mask to stop your hair from drying out. One of our favourites is the Moroccanoil Intense Hydrating Mask, £24.75, Feel Unique.
For extra shine, finish your conditioning treatment with a quick boost of cold water. This will soothe the heat damage from the hot water and lock in the natural shine.
The long bob or the 'LOB'
Katie Allan, Creative Manager at Charles Worthington Salons advises that: 'To achieve the 'LOB' (long bob) the hair needs to layered in a subtle way which can be done by layering the hair underneath. The hair then falls naturally with movement, whilst still looking thick and lustrous. Regular trims are essential for keeping the textured ends in tip top condition.'
Blow-drying your bob
1. Rough dry your hair until almost dry, tipping your head upside down and paying attention to the roots, to create lots of volume.
2. Section your hair into layers and taking either your brush or the Nicky Clarke Frizz Control Hot Air Styler under your hair, pull outwards and down to create volume. Upon reaching the ends of your hair, curl the styler or brush round and under to create shape.
3. The natural bristle brush de-frizzes the hair, whilst ensuring the finished look is sleek and glossy – particularly perfect for the summer months!
4. Use a fine-tooth comb to part your hair evenly into a centre parting.
5. Finish with hairspray.
Adding waves to your bob
1. Section off your hair in layers, starting from the bottom.
2. Take a medium piece of hair between the straighteners a couple of inches from the scalp.
3. Take the rest of your hair and wrap around the straighteners.
4. Twist the straighteners 180 degrees.
5. Slowly pull the straighteners down, twisting backwards and forward to get that tousled wave.
6. Once released, tease the waves with a comb to give the hair some volume.
7. Finish all pieces in the layer and then move onto the layer above.
8. Upon reaching the top layer, start your waves further down to fit in with the sweeping parting.
9. Brush your fingers through and then spritz with hairspray.
What are the Best Bob Haircuts for Summer?
1. Blonde Balayage Angled Bob with Layers
Photo: Hair Adviser |
An angled bob with layers can be dressed up or down with styling. Adding curls or beachy waves will make it a more fun look for a night out. Wear your bob more sleek for an interview or for a more professional look. The layering of an angled bob makes it less severe and more wearable.
2. Tousled Short Layered Bob with Bangs
Photo: Pinterest |
A short layered bob with bangs is a great option to add volume to fine hair. If you have fine, curly hair a layered bob helps create shape and can keep your hair from looking too triangular. If you’re wanting a wash and go look, this is a great option for those with texture. You will want to add a product with some hold to keep the shape.
3. Chic Copper Chin-Length Bob with Bangs
Photo: Pinterest |
A chin-length bob with bangs is the perfect shape for fine hair textures. No volume is needed for this flatter shape so it’s super easy to style. Add some texture mist and air dry or blow dry with your hands for a cute and lived-in finish. Make sure your layers are not cut too short to maintain thickness and great lines. If you have a round face shape this cut is super complimentary.
4. Shaggy Lob
Photo: Instagram |
Shag haircuts are still going strong for 2022, and it’s not hard to see why. “Depending on your hair texture, the shag is a cut that can be worn extremely messy or seamlessly straight,” says stylist Anh Co Tran. The cut looks amazing with just about every length and texture, but as Taylor Swift shows here, it’s particularly excellent with a few rough waves that hit right above the collarbone.
5. Modern Diana
Photo: Pinterest |
If Spencer has you thinking about a Diana-inspired chop, you’re not alone. Ryan Trygstad, celebrity hairstylist and cofounder of New York’s Mark Ryan Salon, says he’s been giving his clients a modern take on the princess’s iconic haircut. “It’s such a fresh look and exudes confidence and style,” he says. “The cut itself is a mixture of a very short layered bob edging toward a pixie.”

6. Asymmetrical Bob
Photo: Byrdie |
An asymmetrical bob is shorter in length and cut into a bob that’s uneven, where one side is longer than the other. Having a big comeback this year, this all-time fashionable hairstyle caters to all types of faces and hair texture without needing too much maintenance! It’s wonderful for women looking to add some flavor to a classic bob. It goes above the standard look and is more fun, as it takes the bore away from a simple haircut!
You can go blunt for more accent or curly and wavy for added flare and customize it with color and a fringe. The best thing is that you can have the length and angle adjusted to suit your face shape or depending on the facial feature you want to highlight.
7. Brunette Short Bob with Bangs
Photo: Instagram |
If you’re searching for a haircut with lots of style, try a short bob with bangs. The clean lines of this shape will always make an impact on any age group. The key is to keep the layers one length for the maximum impact visually. Refrain from blowing this shape under, and instead, try blowing the edge straight down for a more modern finish. A short bob hairstyle should be cut about every 5 weeks to keep it looking sharp.
8. Box Bob
Photo: Getty Images |
Enter the box bob, an instantly and effortlessly volumising haircut. If it’s got you conjuring up fabulous images of flapper girls à la The Great Gatsby, you’ll want to update that mental image to today’s equally snazzy version.
If your have fine, straight hair, a box bob—or a straight-across chop—will give you a major boost in the fullness department.
Unlike paper cut and sliced bobs which have to be styled pencil straight, the box bob is one of those amazingly versatile hairstyles that can be styled wavy or sleek, changing the way you look effortlessly.
The best way to style it though, is with a tousled wave for maximum oomph.
Style your bob using a hair straightener to create a soft bend in the hair, or create an S-shaped wave for a more relaxed look.
9. Dimensional Chin-Length Layered Bob
Photo: Pinterest |
You cannot go wrong with a chin-length layered bob. This shape will always be stylish and easy to maintain. Try a side part for the most lift in the crown or a middle part for a flatter top. Ask your stylist to point cut the ends for beautiful seamless layers that add movement. Blow-dry simply with a round brush or your hands and you can even add some curls with an iron.
