When looking for a place to buy, rent, study, or do business, most people first look for one that is safe. Let's face it: no one wants to live in an area where crime is common.
It's helpful to know which cities in the US have the lowest rates of property and violent crime, making them the safest places to live, work, study, or even just visit.
This list shows the safest cities, based on a poll by SmartAsset, WalletHub, and KnowInsiders. They ranked cities by comparing more than 200 of the biggest ones in the U.S. on a number of different factors.

Top 10 Safest Cities in the US to Live and Travel
1. Sunnyvale, CA

Located in Silicon Valley, Sunnyvale ranks at the top of our study as the safest city in America. This California city has the 11th-lowest drug poisoning mortality rate (8.3 deaths for every 100,000 residents), the 21st-lowest violent crime rate (167 for every 100,000 residents) and ranks 31st for excessive drinking with 16.73% of the population over-drinking.
2. Frisco, TX

With 80 violent crimes for every 100,000 people, Frisco, Texas, has the fourth-lowest violent crime rate out of 200 cities. With 7.8 deaths per 100,000 people, the Texas city is tied for the fifth-lowest drug poisoning mortality rate. However, Frisco has a bigger problem with excessive drinking, with 19.26% of the city's adult population doing so.
The Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex's Frisco, Texas, has been named the nation's safest city to live in. It boasts the sixth-lowest rate of property crime and the fourth-lowest rate of violent crime.

3. McKinney, TX

Since McKinney is located in the same county as Frisco, the county-level statistics for the mortality rate from drug poisoning (7.8 deaths per 100,000 residents) and the proportion of adults who drink excessively (19.26%) are also the same for both cities. However, this Texas city has a lower rate of property crime (993 incidents per 100,000 residents) than Frisco but a higher rate of violent crime (143 for every 100,000 residents).
McKinney, Texas, which is 32 miles north of Dallas and adjacent to Frisco to the east, comes in third on the list. It ranks 10th in terms of violent crime and 5th in terms of property crime.

4. Santa Clarita, CA

Santa Clarita, located north of Los Angeles, has the fifth-lowest rate of property crimes in our study at just 944 per 100,000 residents. With 127 violent crimes per 100,000 people, the violent crime rate is also the 12th-lowest. Nine deaths per 100,000 residents, tied for 17th-lowest drug poisoning mortality rate, are recorded in Santa Clarita.
Santa Clarita stands out among a group of Texas beauty queens, representing the Golden State. The fourth safest city on the list is Santa Clarita, California, which is about 30 miles northwest of downtown Los Angeles. The city has the eighth-lowest rate of violent crime and the eleventh-lowest rate of property crime.
5. Plano, TX

The three Texas cities of Plano, Frisco, and McKinney are all in the same county and have the 33rd-lowest vehicular mortality rate (6.4 deaths per 100,000 people). Additionally, Plano ranks 31st for property crime rate (1,683 incidents per 100,000 residents) and 18th for violent crime rate (148 incidents per 100,000 residents).
Plano, Texas, another city in the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex, ranks fifth on the list of the safest places to live in the United States. Out of the cities included in the study, it has the 17th-lowest rate of violent crime.
6. Glendale, CA

Glendale, California has the eighth-lowest and 29th-lowest violent and property crime rate, respectively. FBI data shows that in 2019 there were 114 violent crimes per 100,000 residents and 1,631 property crimes per 100,00 residents in the city. Glendale also ties at 17th for drug poisoning mortality, with nine deaths for every 100,000 residents.

7. Yonkers, NY

Yonkers is located directly north of New York City and has the fourth-lowest property crime rate in this study, with only 913 for every 100,000 residents. The city has the fifth-lowest vehicular mortality rate, with 4.1 deaths for every 100,000 residents. But Yonkers has a higher drug poisoning mortality rate (15.6 deaths for every 100,000 residents), ranking 94th for this metric.
8. Arlington, VA

Arlington, Virginia – a suburb of Washington, DC – has the second-lowest vehicular mortality rate of all 200 cities with just 2.7 deaths for every 100,000 residents. Arlington also has the 11th-lowest violent crime rate, with 127 incidents for every 100,000 residents. But it has a much higher excessive drinking rate of 22.23%.
9. McAllen, TX

Only one of the top ten Texas cities on our list, McAllen, is situated outside of Collin County. With 97 violent crimes per 100,000 people, it has the sixth-lowest rate. Only 3.5 drug deaths per 100,000 residents in McAllen makes it the city with the lowest mortality rate from drug poisoning. But with 10.6 deaths per 100,000 people, it has one of the lowest rates of vehicular mortality in this study.
The third city on the list is McAllen, Texas, which is close to the border with Mexico. The city has the 18th-lowest rate of violent crime and stretches south to the Rio Grande.
10. San Jose, CA (tie)

With 8.3 drug poisoning deaths per 100,000 residents, San Jose, which is in the center of Silicon Valley, has the 11th-lowest drug poisoning mortality rate. This city is ranked 31st for both the rate of excessive drinking (16.73%) and the number of traffic fatalities (6.4 per 100,000 residents).
