The teddy bear, which was created by the moguls Louis Vuitton and Steiff, is the most expensive teddy bear in the world, as we have not yet recorded the existence of another teddy bear that would sell so well at auctions. The world-renowned fashion brand and toy manufacturer have worked together to create a teddy bear that exudes elegance and prestige.
In 2000, the bear was sold at auction in Monaco, where it was bought by Korean Jessie Kim. It can currently be viewed at the Teddy Bear Museum in the Korean city of Jeju.

It was made in 1905 in Steiff’s second year of making teddies, and it was the beloved bear of Bob Henderson. He would become a colonel in the British Army and fight in World War II — right alongside his beloved Teddy Girl.
In fact, she never left Henderson’s side until his death in 1990.
4. Steiff Titanic Mourning Bear – $ 136,000

In 2000, one of the mourning bears sold for $136,000 to the Puppenhaus Museum in Switzerland, according to The Telegraph.

The Harlequin model is one of the prettier Steiff bears with its two-tone coloring. It was made in 1925, and this particular bear was in very good condition upon its sale in 2010.
The original owner sold it in 1999. She worked for Steiff for more than 40 years, including for the last five years of founder Margarete Steiff’s life (who died in 1909).
9. Steiff Elliot Teddy Bear - $73,409 (£49,500)

Bottom line: The Elliot model debuted in 1908 and was notable for its bright-blue mohair. Steiff also made five other colorful bears and sent them all to Harrods in London.
Elliot was the least popular among the lot and was never recreated. However, one of them survived and was auctioned in 1993 — fetching three times the estimated price.
It is assumed that Elliot was produced as a sample for the British department store, Harold’s. He would have been one of six different colored bears in the sample production. Unfortunately, Elliot never went on to full production, making any surviving examples extremely rare.
10. Steiff Hot Water Bottle Bear - $61,742

Bottom line: In 1907, Steiff created a new kind of teddy that contained a pouch for holding a metal bottle with hot water inside to keep kids warm in cold months. The bottle could be removed when not needed.
The bear sold at the Christie’s auction in 2006 and was owned by the same woman for her entire 90-year life. She even had pictures from her childhood to prove its authenticity.
A quick look at the History of the Teddy Bear by Bears4u. The teddy bear is said to be named after United States President Theodore “Teddy” Roosevelt. In 1902, President Roosevelt went on a bear-hunting trip in Mississippi. While hunting he captured an American black bear but refused to kill it. The story of the trip soon got spread as many newspapers around the country featured political cartoons starring “Teddy” and “the bear.” A shop owner named Morris Michtom saw one of the cartoons and had the idea of making a stuffed toy in the form of a bear, which he called a ‘Teddy Bear’, to sell in his shop. They were a great success. Ladies and children carried the soft toys animals with them everywhere they went. At the same time, Richard Steiff in Germany designed a stuffed toy bear and the Steiff firm also lay claim to being the first producers of these cute bears. Steiff still produces a range of both collectible and everyday teddies that are one of the most popular brands in the world. President Roosevelt even used a teddy as his mascot when he ran for re-election. Early Teddies were made to look like real bears with small eyes and long pointy faces but today they are made to look as cute as possible with big eyes and smaller faces. There is hardly a child in the Western world who has not had a cuddly bear of some sort. They are an iconic gift that everyone associates with a new arrival. Many of them have become collector's items and are extremely valuable. It is now possible to get any sort of bear in the form of a teddy including pandas, polar bears, black bears, grizzly bears, and even sun bears. The biggest teddy bear collection in the world was found at The Teddy Bear Museum in England with a collection of more than 2,000 bears. Unfortunately, the museum was put up for auction in 2006. Today, one family claims to own more than 5,000 teddy bears, though they haven’t officially counted them all. The Volpps’ collection includes a teddy bear that they purchased at auction for almost £50,000 Over the years there have been many famous bears who have appeared in films and been made into stuffed toys. Paddington Bear, Winnie the Pooh, Baloo, Rupert Bear, Sooty are just a few household names. There are even tv programs that are all about bears including care bears and Teddy Ruxpin. Pudsey Bear is a very well-known bear used as the mascot for the Children In Need charity. Most popular brands include Gund and Ty Inc and there are do it yourself bear shops throughout the world such as the Build-A-Bear Workshop. |
