Photo KnowInsiders |
The actresses invest a lot of time and thought into selecting the dress that would make them look like the perfect diva that they are, not to mention the huge amount of money that is doled out for the dresses to be on the red carpet of the Academy Awards, be it the actress who pays the amount to acquire the dress, or the brand that pays a star to be its face. It is of no use for us to go into the technicalities about the transactions between the stars and their designers.
All we can do is stare awestruck at the Academy Awards history books, ogling at these dresses, after the resignation from making failed attempts to count how many non-existent houses and imaginary assets we might need to sell off to buy such a dress.

Anne Hathaway blew us all away in this red satin gown at the 2011 Oscars. Created by Valentino, Hathaway's dress cost a whopping $80,000. Yeah, that's probably more than your car, and this is the least expensive dress on the list. Also, that Tiffany & Co. necklace she's wearing was worth about $10 million. Yes, we're practically in Ocean's 8, and we're sure she had security on her for this event, too.At the 2011 Academy Awards, Anne Hathaway emerged as the perfect embodiment of Hollywood glamour as she walked the red carpet and hosted the show in a lavish red gown.
The pillar-box gown made of silk faille was a Valentino design, and was reportedly worth $80,000. It was a strapless gown that perfectly highlighted her $10 million worth of Tiffany & Co. necklace. She had her signature red lipped smile on all night during which she changed eight times, but the Valentino was the priciest.

Charlize Theron tied with Cate Blanchett as she appeared at the 2014 Academy Awards wearing a $100,000 worth of dress. She wore a sophisticated white strapless peplum dress with clean-angular lines and crystal embellishments on the flair to break up the monotony. The Dior haute Couture was custom-made, and gave her a stunning appearance. Her look was further enhanced by her pixie cut hair style, and her $4.5 million worth of bracelets and earrings, by the celebrated Harry Winston.
7. Jessica Biel - $100,000

Jessica Biel was looking elegant and beautiful in this simple Chanel dress at the 2013 Oscars. As we've learned, simple dresses cost just as much, apparently, because this sleek, sparkly gown was worth $100,000. We don't even want to know how much that jewelry was on top of it all, but it's safe to say she was a pretty pricey lady that evening. Jessica wasn't nominated for anything that year, but we always love her, and she is always slaying.
From playing pastor’s daughter to combat pilot to vampire hunter, Jessica Biel’s natural beauty (and talent) just shines through. And speaking of natural beauty, Biel’s $100,000 shimmer dress from Chanel made her radiant during the 2013 Oscars. While other dubbed the dress safe and boring, it didn’t fail to give Biel that glow. Completing her look was an assortment of jewelry from Tiffany and Co.

Kate Winslet graced the 2007 Oscars in a mint green figure-hugging dress, which was an unusual color option for such a big occasion. But the Titanic star’s gamble paid off, as her $100,000 Valentino dress became the toast of the fashion world that night. Winslet was voted as the Best Dressed Star during the event by fashion and showbiz magazines and websites around the world.
At the 2007 Academy Awards, Kate Winslet hit the $100,000 mark with the decadent Valentino creation she wore. The vintage one-shoulder dress was of a pleasantly unusual pale sea-foam green shade. The drape around the bodice extended to an over-the-shoulder train, adding to the glamour of the gown which hugged her figure up to the knee, to flare gently below that. The ensemble, complete with a chic up-do, got her voted the best dressed actress at the event by fashion-patrons.
5. Audrey Hepburn - $131,292

It’s quite hard to beat the classic and Audrey Hepburn’s dress, the one she wore during the 1954 Oscars, is a clear testament to such notion. Miss Hepburn went to the event dressed in a customized version of her final dress she wore in the very loved classic Roman Holiday. The original cost of the dress remains unknown but in 2011, Miss Hepburn’s dress was placed on auction and netted a staggering $131,292.
4. Elizabeth Taylor - $167,500

The iconic Elizabeth Taylor remains one of the modern cinema’s greatest beauties, which is probably why the dress she wore to the 1970 Oscars is held in high regard. In fact, the periwinkle and violet chiffon dress is ranked as one of the most expensive Oscar dresses of all time, when in 1999, it was auctioned and sold for $167,500. The fact that the dress was designed by Edith Head may also contributed to the value.
In 1999, Elizabeth Taylor became one of the actresses to wear the most expensive Academy Awards dresses, when her 1970 Oscars vintage dress was auctioned for a massive $167,500, though it is unclear as to what the original cost was. The periwinkle and violet chiffon number was an Edith Head creation, and its plunging neckline perfectly accentuated her frame. Her iconic look was completed with violet eye-shadow and a 69-carat diamond necklace, a gift from her husband Richard Burton.

Cate Blanchett has been slaying us year after year. However, she made a splash at the 2007 Oscars in this Armani Privé gown. Completed with Swarovski crystals, this dress was worth about $200,000. Again, this stunning and talented lady didn't take home the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for Notes on a Scandal, but she did at least steal our hearts. We also wish we could steal that gown, but we doubt it'd look as good on us.Cate Blanchett is the one actress to be featured in the list of actresses to wear the most expensive Academy Awards dresses, twice. At the 2007 Academy Awards, she rocked the red carpet with minimalist jewellery, and the aesthetic of her black number by Armani Privé. The one shouldered silver mesh gown with a black tulle overlay, embellished with Swarovski crystals and a black spangle floral motif, made her a vision, as it glided over her curves. The dress cost her a staggering $200,000.
2. Nicole Kidman - - $2,000,000

So far all of the dresses have been a couple hundred thousand dollars. So, let's make some room for Nicole Kidman. This bombshell knows how to draw all the attention, and she definitely did so way back at the 1997 Oscars. Yeah, we know she hasn't aged like even a day. This Christian Dior gown was worth a whopping $2,000,000. Six zeroes, you counted right. Nicole wasn't even nominated this year, but she definitely caught our attention. We're bowing down to this queen, and boy is she slaying. Again: look out for Bombshell, because we're more than excited for some brilliant and powerful ladies to hit the big screen together.
1. Jennifer Lawrence - $4,000,000

The most expensive dress in Oscars history is this record-breaker worn by Jennifer Lawrence to the 2013 Academy Awards. The Dior Couture blush-pink Cinderella-inspired ball gown is valued at $4 million. Dior lent it to the actress, as she was the face of the brand.
On her way up to accept her award for Best Actress, Jennifer Lawrence notoriously tripped over while wearing this dress. This gave the brand extended air time—an advertising blessing which probably would have cost millions to buy in the traditional way. It does look heavy to walk in!
