Nestled in the glistening golden sands of the desert that blankets the Arizona-Nevada border, Death Valley is one of the most extreme but beautiful places in the whole of the US.
Comprising 1.3 million hectares of dusty landscapes that are speared by yucca plants and craggy, rocky outcrops, this wild gem offers a very different take on the traditional perception of America’s national parks. More than a million people visit Death Valley every year and it’s often combined with trips to Joshua Tree National Park and the Mojave Desert. Although the terrain and the weather conditions can be challenging, there’s an array of activities on offer here for those ready to test their mettle. Examples include hiking, climbing, abseiling, horseback riding and cycling. Movie buffs may also want to check out the filming locations of the epic Star Wars Episode IV film.

The most famous falls mark the border between Canada and USA. The natural wonder is made of three falls, that are sprawled in the Canadian and American territories. The waterfall attracts millions of tourists every year. It also serves as a source of hydroelectric power due to the incredible volume of water, that drops with immense power.
During a warm season, Niagara Falls is often visited in the evenings, since it is illuminated and fascinates with a show of colors. During the especially cold season this year, though, it got half frozen and visitors could admire the amazing ice structures.
3. Grand Canyon National Park
Measuring a mile deep, up to 18 miles wide and more than 275 miles long, no other sight in the USA beats this giant hole in the ground for instilling stupefying awe. Peering over the edge of the Grand Canyon is enough of a thrill for some, but to really appreciate the canyon’s grandeur, hike all the way down inside it to the rushing Colorado River.
Top tip: To escape the crowds, visit the canyon’s North Rim, which gets one tenth as many visitors as the South Rim. Note that the North Rim is now closed for the 2020 season.

A fascinating network of wetlands, waterways and subtropical forests, this is a unique wonder that offers all kinds of action-packed adventures and wildlife spotting opportunities.
Perhaps the most famous resident of the Florida Everglades is the alligator. It is estimated that there are more than 200,000 of these fascinating reptiles in the Everglades and taking an air boat ride to catch a glimpse of these menacing, prehistoric creatures comes highly recommended. The Everglades is thought to be the only place on the planet where alligators and crocodiles co-exist.
A boat trip offers incredible opportunities not only to spot the subtle movements and beady eyes of crocs and gators, but also to appreciate the sheer size of the wetlands and to cast an eye upon the numerous bird species that call the Everglades home. There may even be the chance to catch sight of marine mammals such as bottlenose dolphins and manatees that sometimes come into the area. The elusive Florida panther is another high-profile native.

Famous conservationist and wilderness writer John Muir called Yosemite nature’s temple. Gazing up at towering granite monoliths such as El Capitan and at Yosemite Falls, North America’s highest waterfall, you’ll know exactly what he meant. The skies here are impossibly clear and blue, and they provide a stunning contrast to the scorched golden and red rocks that create a scene worthy of a movie backdrop. A tour of Monument Valley includes several geographical highlights, including The Mittens, John Ford’s Point and the Three Sisters.
