Overview of Healthcare System in Tennessee
Over the past ten years, Tennessee has seen a number of hospital closures, which has drawn attention to the state's local healthcare systems. The Tennessee Health Care Capacity Dashboard, which is shown below along with a number of significant findings regarding the health care capacity of counties without a hospital, was developed by Sycamore to assist in relevant policy discussions. Although a hospital does not ensure strong capacity for these provider types, the 20 counties without one also typically have lower capacity for primary and mental health care.
In the most recent development, it was revealed that 45% of Tennessee hospitals are currently in danger of closing, according to a new report commissioned by the Tennessee Hospital Association. In 2022, 60% of Tennessee hospitals were reported to be operating at a loss.
Merely 23% of Tennessee's hospitals faced the possibility of closing in 2019. According to a press release issued by Kaufman Hall, the consulting firm hired to produce the report, hospital margins in 2022 were 68% lower than they were prior to the COVID-19 pandemic. This information was released on February 15.
