♦ In Washington, 103 hospitals were evaluated by US News. Fourteen are ranked in the state and meet high U.S. News standards. Hospitals in Portland and Seattle were also ranked by US News. The University of Washington Medical Center is Washington's number one hospital. U.S. News compared more than 4,750 medical centers nationwide in 15 specialties and 17 procedures and conditions, including cardiology, neurology, geriatrics, orthopedics, and more, to compile the rankings.
This year, U.S. News added seven new procedures or conditions to its rankings: heart attack, stroke, pneumonia, diabetes, kidney failure, hip fracture, and back surgery.
The rankings' goal is to assist patients in selecting a hospital based on the specific type of care they require.
