The Suicide Squad: Release Date, First Trailer, Where and How to Watch?
The Suicide Squad is all set to wreak havoc on our cinema's screens this summer (and on HBO Max in the US) – and we've now got our first trailer for it.
Writer/director James Gunn confirmed in early February that the DC reboot and sort-of sequel to Suicide Squad is "fully finished and cut", adding: "I made every single choice and [Warner Bros] never once even slightly interfered.
"They gave very few notes – they were usually good and minor and I took them if I wanted to and didn't if I didn't want to. Warners was creatively amazing."
A creatively-free Gunn should just add to the excitement for his take on the anti-hero squad, given what he delivered with both Guardians of the Galaxy movies. He's also not been constricted in following on from the first movie.
"Um, it's its own thing. It does not contradict the first movie, I don't think. It might in some small ways… I don't know..." he said.
But who cares about continuity when what Gunn has crafted looks so much fun? The movie combines new characters with returning favorites like Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn and Viola Davis's Amanda Waller.
But who are those new characters and what can we expect from Gunn's take on the DC anti-hero squad? Here's everything you need to know about The Suicide Squad.
How and When to watch
The Suicide Squad Release date. |
If you have HBO Max, just tune in from Aug. 6 as normal to watch. Like Wonder Woman 1984, there's no extra charge beyond your subscription fee. Right now, HBO Max costs $15 a month.
In fact, you might already have access to HBO Max and not even know it. If you currently subscribe to HBO via your cable or satellite provider, you can probably get HBO Max without paying anything extra. We explain it in detail here, but essentially, you'll need to watch on a smart TV or streaming device -- or a Comcast Xfinity box -- using the HBO Max app and your home internet connection.
Plus, last December, Roku struck a deal that gives subscribers access to HBO Max. Roku users who already use the HBO app will automatically update to HBO Max.
But if you want to watch The Suicide Squad on HBO Max from Aug. 6, don't wait too long. As Wonder Woman 1984 on the streaming service earlier this year, the blockbuster movie is available for streaming only for a limited time -- a month, unless things change, Cnet wrote.

Who all are in this new Suicide Squad line-up, you ask? The Suicide Squad stars Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, Idris Elba as Bloodsport, John Cena as Peacemaker, Joel Kinnaman as Rick Flag, Jai Courtney as Captain Boomerang, Peter Capaldi as Thinker, David Dastmalchian as Polka-Dot Man, Daniela Melchior as Ratcatcher 2, Michael Rooker as Savant, Alice Braga as Sol Soria, Pete Davidson as Blackguard, Nathan Fillion as T.D.K., Sean Gunn as Weasel, Flula Borg as Javelin, Mayling Ng as Mongal, and Viola Davis as Amanda Waller.
Beyond that, we've got Storm Reid as Bloodsport's daughter Tyla, Steve Agee as jail warden and Waller's aide John Economos, Joaquín Cosío as Corto Maltese major general Mateo Suárez, Juan Diego Botto as Corto Maltese dictator Silvio Luna, Jennifer Holland as Waller's aide Emilia Harcourt, Suicide Squad comic book writer John Ostrander as Dr. Fitzgibbon, and Tinashe Kajese as Flo Crawley. There are undisclosed roles for Sylvester Stallone, Taika Waititi, and Julio Ruiz.
Gunn is the director and writer of The Suicide Squad. Charles Roven and Peter Safran served as producers. The Suicide Squad is a production of DC Films, Atlas Entertainment, and The Safran Company. Warner Bros. Pictures is the global distributor, according to Gadgets 360.
What is the plot of The Suicide Squad?
Dear reader, we know next to nothing. But we can safely assume that it will follow the basic outline of all Suicide Squad stories. Amanda Waller will dispatch her team on an extremely dangerous mission from which many will not emerge unscathed (they are expendables, after all).
A theory, as reprinted by Digital Spy, is that Gunn’s enormous cast list can only mean one thing: lots of deaths. Since the new additions are obscure even within the realm of the comics, it seems unlikely that many of them will remain by the end of the film.
In an Instagram Q&A, Gunn has shared some behind-the-scenes details about the costumes in the upcoming film. Whilst previously, many in the Marvel and DC universe relied on CGI costumes, Gunn has revealed that this won’t be the case in The Suicide Squad. When asked by a fan if they’ll be using real or CGI costumes, Gunn replied: “All practical.”
In a new interview with Rotten Tomatoes (above), Margot Robbie has said that she thinks the film is going to be “incredible”.
“It’s just interesting to see what a different filmmaker makes of Gotham and these characters, and Harley really. I’m fascinated by what James [Gunn] finds interesting about her compared to what Cathy [Yan, Birds Of Prey director] finds interesting, compared to what David [Ayer, 2016’s Suicide Squad writer, and a director] found interesting about her.”
Producer Charles Roven has also given an update about what fans can expect from Gunn’s upcoming movie. Speaking to Total Film, Roven said he “couldn’t be more thrilled to working with [Gunn] on Suicide Squad.” He added: “Everything that I’ve seen so far has just been wonderful. And, you know, we’ve got tremendously talented actors in every role, some who you know and some who will surprise you in the roles that they are playing.
“The movie’s going to have everything in it. It’s going to be tremendously fun and great action, [have] wonderful effects, some great characters, and also, I think it’ll put a lump in your throat and maybe a tear in your eye along the way, too. It’s got everything, really. I’m really excited about it.” Nme reported.
The Suicide Squad will tell a much different story than its predecessorKeeping in line with the sizeable cast and revised aesthetic, it appears that The Suicide Squad's story will go a vastly different direction than the first movie. According to James Gunn and producer Peter Safran in an interview with Empire (via DigitalSpy), the team's mission will take them to the fictional Latin American island of Corto Maltese. "There they have to destroy a Nazi-era prison and laboratory named Jotunheim, where political prisoners were held and experimentations took place," Safran revealed, with Gunn adding that some "horrid secrets" will come to light. Speaking of horrid, it's worth noting that becoming attached to any member of the new Suicide Squad isn't exactly the wisest choice to make. In October 2020, James Gunn hinted on Twitter that it's not out of the question that only two members of the lineup will reach the end of the movie in one piece. One fan replied and theorized that Harley Quinn, King Shark, and Amanda Waller are the most likely to come out unscathed thanks to their "franchise armor," to which Gunn responded "No character was protected by DC. They gave me carte blanche to do what I wanted." Looper cited. |
Is Suicide Squad 2 a Sequel or a Reboot?
Photo: hebergementwebs |
There is a lot of confusion about The Suicide Squad since it is sometimes referred to like Suicide Squad 2 or simply Suicide Squad like the 2016 film. However, it's actually a little bit of both.
The Suicide Squad is a standalone sequel to the 2016 movie. It is described as a "relaunch" considering that it will not be a direct sequel to the first Suicide Squad film. Instead, it is set to take the franchise in a new direction but will still keep most of the original cast, according to Epicstream.
What age rating is The Suicide Squad?
Joel Kinnaman has suggested the movie could be rated R in the US, which would translate to either a 15 or an 18 in the UK depending on the film’s content and signaling a more adult take on super-heroics.
“For me, it was like I did my first comedy, but it’s like heavily R-rated,” he said.
“It was a real learning experience for me too because I’d never done a comedy in that way before. So I asked James to work with me and teach me this sh-t. And yeah, we had so much fun doing it. That movie is going to be a f***ing monster. Honestly, even though I’m in it, I can’t wait to see it as a fan.”
Was filmed delayed?
Fortunately not! The Suicide Squad is one of the few major blockbusters that have managed to avoid any substantial delays, as it wrapped filming in late February – just prior to the coronavirus pandemic.
This has allowed director James Gunn to work on editing from home during the lockdown, which means it should be able to release as planned in August 2021 (assuming cinemas are open do actually by then). Although being added to HBO Max all but locks in that date now, Radiotimesnoted.
What happened in the first Suicide Squad? In the first film, the team of villains was sent on a dangerous mission to take down Enchantress (Cara Delevingne), the reincarnated soul of a mummified sorcerer who tried to destroy the world. Over the course of the film, Leto’s Joker popped up a few times to try and help his on-and-off lover and victim Harley Quinn (Robbie) – but was not particularly well-received by audiences, despite a great deal of hype around the character. |
