Prince Harry’s Memoir: Release Date

Prince Harry is writing an "intimate and heartfelt" memoir about his life that will be released in late 2022.

The book, which is as yet untitled, will be published by Random House in the United States, Random House Canada in Canada and Transworld, an imprint of Penguin Random House UK, in the United Kingdom.

Markus Dohle, CEO of Penguin Random House, said: “All of us at Penguin Random House are thrilled to publish Prince Harry’s literary memoir and have him join the world-renowned leaders, icons, and change-makers we have been privileged to publish over the years.

“Prince Harry has harnessed his extraordinary life experience as a prince, a soldier, and a knowledgeable advocate for social issues, establishing himself as a global leader recognized for his courage and openness.

“It is for that reason we’re excited to publish his honest and moving story.”

In the book, the Duke of Sussex "will share, for the very first time, the definitive account of the experiences, adventures, losses, and life lessons that have helped shape him," according to the official press release.

The memoir will cover Harry's "lifetime in the public eye," his military service and two deployments to Afghanistan, his dedication to public service, and "the joy he has found in being a husband and father."

“I’m writing this not as the prince I was born but as the man I have become," Harry said in a statement accompanying the press release. "I’ve worn many hats over the years, both literally and figuratively, and my hope is that in telling my story — the highs and lows, the mistakes, the lessons learned — I can help show that no matter where we come from, we have more in common than we think."

"I’m deeply grateful for the opportunity to share what I’ve learned over the course of my life so far and excited for people to read a firsthand account of my life that’s accurate and wholly truthful," he said.

There will also be an audio edition of Harry’s book. The publisher did not reveal who would do the narration.

According to the press release, Harry will donate the proceeds from the book to charity. A spokesperson for the duke declined to answer whether or not this includes any compensation that may have been given in the form of an advance.

How much does Prince Harry earn from his memoir?

Prince Harry is reportedly earning a big paycheck for his upcoming memoir.

According to Page Six, the Duke of Sussex will earn an advance of at least $20 million for his work. Additionally, his co-writer, ghostwriter J.R. Moehringer, will make at least $1 million.

Penguin House Publishing has a history of scoring lucrative deals for high-profile writers, having offered Barack and Michelle Obama a $65 million book deal.

What others say about his memoir?

News of the book, first reported by the New York Post, was met with mixed reactions on Twitter.

While supporters of the couple (known as the #SussexSquad) expressed their excitement and pride, establishment monarchy fans (who often tend to be critical of Harry and Meghan) lambasted him for the decision, as did some British reporters and commentators who have covered the royal family.

There’s already a small library of books dedicated to the Duke and Duchess, including Katie Nicholl’s “Harry: Life, Loss, and Love,” Leslie Carroll’s “American Princess” and Andrew Morton’s “Meghan: A Hollywood Princess,” as well as multiple books about Meghan’s rescue dog, a beagle named Guy. In June, Random House Children’s Books released a picture book by Meghan, titled “The Bench,” about the bond between Prince Harry and their son, Archie.

Royal family members have written memoirs

It is highly unusual for a central member of the British royal family to produce a memoir. A few semidetached members of the family have written memoirs, including Sarah Ferguson, the Duchess of York and ex-wife of Prince Andrew, who wrote “My Story.”

The most recent example comparable to Harry’s project is arguably the 1951 memoir “A King’s Story” by Edward, the Duke of Windsor, who abdicated the throne to marry American Wallis Simpson.

Normally, a distinguished historian is tapped to write an official biography after a senior royal has died. For instance, Queen Elizabeth II appointed historian William Shawcross to write her mother’s official biography.

Harry’s parents never wrote memoirs, but they did support authors who wrote books about them. Harry’s father, Prince Charles, assisted Jonathan Dimbleby with a biography, which was published alongside a documentary. Harry’s mother, Princess Diana, cooperated — covertly — with Andrew Morton on his book, “Diana: Her True Story.” Diana initially said she had nothing to do with the book.

In May 2018 Harry married Meghan Markle—a divorced American actress, daughter of an African American mother and a white father—whose informal approachability and irrepressible personal warmth were reminiscent of the much beloved Diana, remembered as the “People’s Princess.”

The ceremony was held in the medieval St. George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle but was unlike any previous royal wedding. Traditional British pomp and circumstance mixed with elements of African American culture, including the singing of the rhythm-and-blues classic “Stand by Me” by a gospel choir and an impassioned sermon in the tradition of the Black church about the redemptive power of love, delivered by Michael Bruce Curry, the first African American presiding bishop and primate of the Episcopal Church.
