As the automotive world trends toward an ever cleaner, ever more electrified future, we're seeing new battery-electric cars pop up like weeds. It should come as no surprise that 2021 will offer more BEVs than any other model year, ever. What's more is they're better to drive, offer better range, and are better built than the EVs of yesteryear, and we've run down every single one of them for you here—with a few key stats for each, too. We'll start from the most expensive EV on sale today and work our way down the pecking order to the more affordable offerings; if you're looking for an electric SUV, we have that covered with a separate list.

Tesla Model 3 - $39,190

The Model 3 was the electric car many had been waiting for. It’s a compact executive saloon rivalling the likes of the Mercedes C-Class and BMW 3 Series – a market with broad mainstream appeal – and it’s also one of the most convincing electric cars that money can buy.

It combines minimalist style, space-age technology, grin-inducing performance, cutting-edge charging tech – supported by the expansive and dedicated Tesla Supercharger network – and, most importantly, a long driving range. The entry-level Standard Range Plus model claims up to 267 miles on a single charge, but it doesn’t sacrifice performance to achieve this. The electric motor drives the rear wheels and powers the car from 0-60mph in 5.3 seconds, while top speed is 140mph.

Porsche Taycan - $105,150

With a base price of $105,150 for the base 4S model, the Porsche Taycan is the second-most expensive EV you can buy in 2021. (We should note it may be the priciest you can buy, period, given how it's on sale now, and the Air follows later.) Prices only go (way) up from the 4S, too, with more powerful the Taycan Turbo starting at $152,250, and the top dog Turbo S costing a whopping $186,350 before options. Those are exceptionally pricey, sure, but the Taycan is (by some margin) the best driving EV we've come across. It is a Porsche, after all.

Lucid Air (Base: 406 miles, $77,400)

Even though we know of Lucid's plans to bring less expensive (and less powerful) Air models to production in the near future, for now, the only Air you can get your hands on is the Dream Edition. Renault Zoe - $27,250

The Renault Zoe sets out to resolve two of the most common complaints about electric cars: the high price and the often feeble range between charges.

This five-door, Ford Fiesta-sized hatchback can comfortably do almost 200 miles on a full charge, costs less to buy than most rivals and comes with plenty of standard equipment, including a wall-mounted 7kW charger installed at your home.

Tesla Model S (Performance: 334 miles, $91,990)

The Tesla Model S recently received a few updates for 2021, and those updates include a new price tag (after several shufflings). The most important of all the updates, however, have to do with Tesla's new claimed ranges for the Model S (it cracks the 400-mile barrier) and the introduction of the new, 1,080-hp Model S Plaid. In short, it's the quickest, most powerful version of the Model S yet, and it's here to bring the heat to cars like the Taycan Turbo S and the Lucid Air, and it even improves on the Model S Long Range's, er, long driving range.

Kia e-Niro - $39,090

The Kia e-Niro is a pure-electric SUV that’ll seat five and manage an anxiety-busting range. So, if you think electric vehicles are best left to delivering milk, you might be quite surprised by how things have come on.

The Kia e-Niro is one of the finest EVs on sale. Torpedoing traditional electric car concerns, the long-range Kia e-Niro, which is available in two specification levels called 3 and 4, has an impressive 282-mile range plus Kia’s seven-year warranty. There’s also a 39kWh mid-range model, called 2, that has a still-decent range of 180 miles.

BMW i3 - $45,445

The BMW i3 has been on sale since 2013, and that makes it one of the oldest cars on this list-second only to the Tesla Model S. Not many changes for the i3 in 2021. If you want a pure BEV i3, your options are between the base i3 and the i3S (the models with gas-fed range-extending engines onboard don't count, as they turn the i3 into a form of a plug-in hybrid). The i3 makes just 168 horsepower and its range is on the low side, so it's definitely more of an urban commuter than a highway blaster; even the edgier i3S isn't much tougher, pumping out only 181 horses and offering the same middling driving range as the regular i3.

The Polestar 2 is the Volvo-adjacent Swedish company's follow-up to the drop-dead gorgeous and exclusive Polestar 1 super GT. Unlike its bigger brother, the Polestar 2 isn't a plug-in hybrid but a pure battery EV. Every other Polestar from here on out will be a battery-electric vehicle, too.
