How does the Women's Six Nations work this year?

This year, the Six Nations is being played out in a condensed format similar to the Autumn Nations Cup, with two pools of three and a play-off finals weekend. Each team will play one home and one away matches in the pool stage, while play-offs will see teams play sides ranked in the same position from the opposite pool, said Wales Online.

Reigning champions England, the only professional side in the tournament, have been drawn alongside Scotland and Italy in Pool A, while Wales have been drawn to face Ireland and semi-professional France.

Why the change of format, you may ask? Well, it was announced in January that the tournament would not be going ahead as planned in its usual window due to the ongoing effects of the pandemic, and when bosses came to rearranging the championship they had to factor in outstanding World Cup qualifiers for some of the teams involved and World Cup preparation - hence the condensed format.

The World Cup, of course, was due to be staged in New Zealand later this year but has since been pushed back to take place in 2022.
