Your eye color is not as permanent as you would think, it could change at any time. In fact, there is a good chance you were born with a different eye color from what you express today.

Eye colors are determined by interactions between several genes and other factors that scientists are still struggling to work out. A handful of people experience changes in eye color at different stages of life, even into adulthood. If you are one of those, then maybe your eyeballs have not settled down yet.

Is it possible to change your eye color?

Your eye color fully matures in infancy. From this early age, you’ll have naturally brown, blue, hazel, green, or gray eyes for the rest of your life. Some people wear colored contacts to enhance the intensity or change the color of their eyes. Others go to more extreme measures.

A new controversial surgical procedure that permanently changes eye color is gaining traction. The practice, popular among celebrities, uses an artificial iris to drastically alter your eye color in a matter of minutes. Many doctors warn that this technique can lead to severe eye damage.

How Do You Change Your Eye Color Naturally?

As already mentioned, there is no natural way to permanently change your eye color. After a lot of digging, I am going to share a few ways to change your eye color naturally, starting from the least practical to the most practical method.

These methods may not be as permanent as you’d like them to be but they are certainly a lot safer than surgical procedures.

Emotions

Believe it or not, some people claim their eye color changes with their emotions. In other words, they can express different eye colors depending on their mood. The iris and the pupil may be responsible for such changes.

Similar to the iris of a camera, the iris inside the eye controls the amount of light entering the eye by controlling the size of the pupil. Emotions can also trigger the iris to change the size of the pupil.

Extreme happiness, grieve or arousal can result to dilated pupils. Large pupils make the eyes appear darker, because the pupils are usually very black. The opposite happens when the pupil constricts.

This is clearly one of the most impractical methods to change your eye color. You can’t switch moods whenever you want. Don’t expect a lot more than subtle changes when trying to change your eye color using emotions.

Make-up

Certain colors in makeup can enhance your eye color. Choosing the right eye shadow for your eye color can be challenging. Just listen to Wayne, he knows a lot about makeup and how you can use it to make your eyes pop. He has lots of example for a variety of eye colors.

Hypnosis

It is not completely clear how hypnosis could change one's eye color. I can only speculate that hypnosis affects one’s mood which in turn may lead to subtle changes in eye color.

This type of hypnosis is usually a once or twice a day self-hypnotic sessions which last for about two to three weeks. Some people claim they started seeing results as early as the third day.

Heads up! A few people tend to have nightmares after their hypnotherapy sessions. Make sure you are informed about the risks before getting into any hypnosis program.

Not a lot of studies have been performed to investigate the association between eye color and emotions or hypnosis. This is because it is extremely difficult to collect and analyze such data.

Color Contacts

This is the most practical way of changing your eye color. Color contacts have been around for a long time. The results you get from color contacts are instantaneous and amazing. You just need to put them in when you need them and take them out when you don’t need them anymore.

An extra price to pay for such amazing results is the discomfort that comes with wearing and removing contact lenses. To be on the safe side, do not borrow contacts or use them without discussing it first with your doctor.

Temporarily changing your eye color

The easiest and most common way to change your eye color temporarily is to wear contact lenses. You can go from a deep brown to a light hazel eye in a matter of seconds (or minutes, depending how long it takes you to get the contacts in).

Colored contact lenses come in three tints:

Opaque: Opaque-tint lenses are solid and non-transparent, offering a complete color change. This type of tint works best for people with dark eyes who want to go dramatically lighter, such as going from dark brown to ice gray.

The most popular opaque colors include:

* blue

* hazel

* green

* violet

* gray

* amethyst

* brown

Enhancement: Enhancement-tint contact lenses boost your natural eye color. These types of lenses are transparent and solid in color. They help define the edges of your iris and add intensity to your eye color. If, for example, you have jade-green eyes and want to alter them to emerald, enhancement lenses would work well.

Visibility: Visibility-tint contact lenses don’t actually change your eye color. These lenses have faint flecks of light blue or green, which can accentuate your natural eye color.

Raw food diet and detoxing

There is a theory in alternative medicine that the color of the irises and the health of internal organs are connected. This direction in medicine is called iridology but since it doesn't have a sufficient evidence base, it is considered pseudoscientific. But Dr. Robert Morse, a health expert who's had a quarter of a million patients, believes that the outer quadrant of the eye is connected with the health of the brain while the inner circle is connected with the digestive system. He says that plenty of fruits and vegetable in your diet can change the color of your eyes and he even created a series of videos dedicated to his research.

According to Dr. Morse, the high concentration of yellow hues signifies a large number of toxins. She managed to improve the work of her digestive system and monitored how the color of her eyes changed from green-brown to a lighter and more intense green, she also managed to change the white part of her eyes to be more clear and bright white. Apart from that, Dr. Morse says that every person's pigment is unique and requires an individual analysis. He believes that spinach helps to keep eyes youthful and bright, honey can add warm hues, and seafood can make the color more intense. The other foods that can affect the color of eyes are olive oil, onions, and nuts.

Sunlight and place of residence

Brown eyes are the most common color on Earth, 70% of the planet population has them, and you can find them on all continents from Australia to North America. In certain regions, the percentage of brown-eyed people reaches 95%, like in Asia, the Middle East, South America, South Europe, and Oceania. In the USA, 50% of population has brown eyes.

Blue-eyed people are more common in northern Europe: Estonia, Denmark, Finland — 85%, Germany — 75%, and the UK — 50%. Sometimes, this eye color can be found among people in the Middle East. By the way, genetics researchers from the University of Copenhagen discovered that blue irises are the result of a mutation that took place around 6-10 thousand years ago. Dr. Eiberg mentioned that initially everyone had brown eyes but a mutation decreased the production of melanin. Scientists suggest that it happened first in areas to the northwest of the Black Sea.

Only 2% of the planet population has green eyes. This hue formed due to the moderate content of melanin and combination of yellow-brown pigments. Green eyes are most common in Spain, Ireland, Russia, Brazil, Iceland, and Pakistan. The rarest eye color is yellow which is the result of eyes that have a lipochrome pigment.

People with chameleon eye color

Some people have eyes that can change color. Even though this phenomenon hasn’t been studied in-depth yet, all scientists still agree that this is not a disease, but a unique particularity which only a few people have. Usually people with green-blue or hazel eyes have chameleon eye color. Medical doctors haven’t found any problems with vision among these people, and this “gift” can’t be inherited either.

According to research, a consistent change of eye color is connected with processes in the nervous and endocrine systems and the quantity of melanin. Chameleon eyes react to stress, romantic feelings, and weariness, their change can also be connected with the environment and climate change. Psychologists say that these people are sometimes unpredictable and mischievous.

How do Melanin and age affect your eye color?

If a baby was born with greyish blue eyes you might be surprised later. The secret of blue eyes, which is also called “the sky effect,” is in the low content of melanin in irises that disperses light and reveals an even brighter, blue-like color. The eye color of many babies at the age of 3-18 months can become darker if the quantity of melanocytes in their irises becomes bigger. For example, people who live in mountainous regions are often born with blue eyes that transform into hazel eyes later but it mostly depends on their parents’ eye color. Sometimes, the final eye color isn’t established until the age of 12.

But babies who are born with brown eyes experience no changes and they maintain that eye color for the rest of their lives. Due to a high content of melanin, the outer layer of the iris absorbs and reflects light which results in the brown color. By the way, even though dark-eyed people suffer from eye diseases less often, they should still wear sunglasses. In accordance with research conducted in the Czech Republic, brown-eyed people are usually perceived as more reliable, while light-eyed women have less problems with negativity and depression.

By the way, the latest research has proven that there are 16 genes that affect eye color, that’s why it’s difficult to predict the color before birth.
