How to Calculate and Convert Mph to Kph: Easiest Ways
|How to calculate and convert Mph to Kph|
If you have ever wondered what a vehicle’s speed would be when converted from miles per hour to kilometers per hour, or even if you are a fan of cricket and want to be able to convert the reported speed of pitches, do not fret. With a little background and a calculator handy, you can easily convert speeds expressed in MPH to KPH. This is the best ways tocalculate and convert it.

Miles per hour is a unit of speed, expressing the number of international miles covered per hour. Miles per hour is the unit used for speed limits on roads in the United Kingdom, United States and various other nations, where it is commonly abbreviated in everyday use to mph or MPH, although mi/h is sometimes used in technical publications.
How to Calculate Miles per Hour?
The three main units that are used to measure the speed are:
- Miles per Hour.
- Meters per Second.
- Kilometers per Hour.
Conversion Factor used to convert the units of speed from meters per second to miles per hour:
We need to multiply with a conversion factor of 2.237, which means, 1 meter per second = 2.237 miles per hour
Conversion Factor used to convert the units of speed from kilometer per second to miles per hour:
We need to multiply with a conversion factor of 0.6214, which means, 1 kilometer per hour = 0.6214 miles per hour
Convert 20 meters per second into miles per hour.
We need to multiply the number 20 with the conversion factor of 2.237 to convert it to miles per hour.
20 meters per second = 20 × 2.237 miles per hour
= 44.74 miles per hour
Therefore, 20 meters per second is equal to 44.74 miles per hour.
Calculating Average Speed From Total Distance and Total Time
Imagine someone drives a car from City A to City B. If you know that the two cities are 350 miles apart and the trip took six hours, you can simply plug those values into the formula for average speed, like so:
Average speed = 350 miles ÷ 6 hours = 58.3 miles/hour
The answer tells you that the car traveled at an average speed of 58.3 miles per hour. The car was likely traveling faster at times and slower at other times, with 58.3 miles per hour being the central or most common speed.
Calculating Average Speed From Multiple Distances and Times
You can still make the calculation if given multiple distances and times. Suppose you are told a driver made the trip between City X and City Y over three days, with each day's drive described as follows:
Day 1: The driver left City X and drove 100 miles in three hours. Day 2: The driver drove 250 miles in four hours. Day 3: The driver drove 300 miles in five hours and arrived at City Y.
The easiest way to calculate average speed in this case is to sum all the distances in the top part of the average speed equation and sum all the times in the bottom part, like so:
Average speed = (100 miles + 250 miles + 300 miles) ÷ (3 hours + 4 hours + 5 hours) = 650 miles ÷ 12 hours = 54.2 miles/hour
The driver's average speed on this trip was 54.2 miles per hour.

Kilometers per hour is a unit of measurement using length in kilometers and time in hours, and thus it acts as a derived unit for both speed and velocity. The proper shorthand for this unit is km/h, however kph or kmph are sometimes used.
Traffic speed limits in Canada are posted in km/h in addition to automobile speedometers for the country using the same units. Both speed and velocity are measured by taking the distance traveled during some duration, and dividing that length by a time.
- Road speed limitations in Canada range anywhere from 10 km/h (6.2 mph) to 120 km/h (74.6 mph)
- With a destination in mind, cycling speeds are around 15 km/h (as opposed to casual cycling, which can be much slower)
- Recreational swimming ranges somewhere between 1-5 km/h. World records are no faster than 9 km/h
Part 1: How to convert Mph to Kph
1 Mile per hour (mph) is equal to 1.609344 kilometers per hour (kph). To convert miles per hour to kilometers per hour, multiply the miles per hour value by 1.609344.
For example, to convert 50 mph to kph, multiply 50 by 1.609344, that makes 80.4672 kph is 50 mph.
Step 1. Convert a mile to a kilometer. Since miles and kilometers are two separate units of measurement, one must first convert one mile of distance to one kilometer of distance before converting them as a distance over time. 1 mile = 1.6093440 kilometers.
Alternatively, if you want to convert kilometers to miles, you would need the inverse. 1 kilometer = 0.6214 miles.
Step 2. Get the speed in MPH. Now that you know the basics of the distances, you’re ready to convert them as speeds. The only other piece of information you need is the MPH speed that you want to convert. For example, let’s say it’s 95MPH.
Step 3. Multiply by 1.60934 (the kilometer equivalent). Once you have the correct speed in miles per hour, you can convert it to kilometers by multiplying it by 1.60934. For the example of 95MPH, 95 x 1.60934 = 152.887KPH.
- If you are making the conversion for KPH to MPH, then you would instead use the opposite distance conversion (1km = 0.6214 miles) and multiply the KPH x 0.6214. For the previous example, if you take 152.887KPH, 152.887 x 0.6214 = 95MPH.

Part 2: Kilometers Per Hour to Miles Per Hour Conversion
The fastest way to convert kilometers per hour to miles per hour is to use this simple formula:
mph = km/h ÷ 1.609344
The speed in miles per hour is equal to the speed in kilometers per hour divided by 1.609344. Since one kilometer per hour is equal to 1.609344 miles per hour, that's the conversion ratio used in the formula.
For example, here's how to convert 5 kilometers per hour to miles per hour using the formula above.
5 km/h = (5 ÷ 1.609344) = 3.106856 mph
Kilometers per hour and miles per hour are both units used to measure speed. Keep reading to learn more about each unit of measure.
Kilometers Per Hour
Kilometers per hour are a measurement of speed expressing the distance traveled in kilometers in one hour.
The kilometer per hour, or kilometre per hour, is an SI unit of speed in the metric system. Kilometers per hour can be abbreviated as km/h, and are also sometimes abbreviated as kph. For example, 1 kilometer per hour can be written as 1 km/h or 1 kph.
In formal expressions, the slash, or solidus (/), is used to separate units used to indicate division in an expression.
Kilometers per hour can be expressed using the formula:
vkm/s = dkmthr
The velocity in kilometers per hour is equal to the distance in kilometers divided by time in hours.
Miles Per Hour
Miles per hour are a measurement of speed expressing the distance traveled in miles in one hour.
The mile per hour is a US customary and imperial unit of speed. Miles per hour can be abbreviated as mph, and are also sometimes abbreviated as mi/h or MPH. For example, 1 mile per hour can be written as 1 mph, 1 mi/h, or 1 MPH.
Miles per hour can be expressed using the formula:
vmph = dmithr
The velocity in miles per hour is equal to the distance in miles divided by time in hours.
