How many official public holidays in Macau in 2025?

The 2025 calendar of public holidays in Macao has been announced by the government. This is three more days than Hong Kong receives, giving the average citizen 20 days off. On top of that, government workers get five extra days off for "compensatory rest" purposes.

Macao law does not make any public holidays "obligatory"; in fact, only ten of them are. That being said, whether or not employees are entitled to time off on non-mandatory public holidays is ultimately up to the discretion of the employers. If a public holiday falls on a rest day, employers can also choose to give employees the following workday off, just like the Tung Ng Festival (Dragon Boat Festival) does next year. These days are automatically granted to public servants as part of their compensatory rest.

From the Feast of the Immaculate Conception to the Buddha's birthday and the Chong Yeung Festival, Macao celebrates a wide variety of holidays due to its mixed Chinese and Portuguese heritage. No Western holiday, not even Christmas and Easter, is mandatory.

Naturally, Lunar New Year is the most anticipated holiday. From January 29th through the 31st, 2025 (a Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday), the celebration will take place. If you take off the Monday and Tuesday before the weekend, you can turn that five-day break into a nine-day break.
