President's DayPresidents' Day was created as a federal holiday in 1885 to commemorate George Washington's birthday on February 22nd. Although it was initially a day to remember the lives of George Washington and Abraham Lincoln, many now use it to honor all US Presidents, both past and present. Presidents' Day is known by several different names. Although a federal holiday, each state has the option of observing it or not, and if they do, they can also pick what to call it. This means that some states are very different from others. The day is known as "George Washington, Thomas Jefferson's Birthday" in Alabama. Arkansas also takes a novel approach, designating the day George Washington/Daisy Gaston Bates Day (after the legendary civil rights campaigner). Arizona refers to the day as Lincoln, Washington, or President's Day. Delaware does not observe the day as a holiday.
