The final will be held at Istanbul's Ataturk Olympic Stadium, which has great memories for Liverpool fans. It is where they staged their legendary comeback against AC Milan in 2005. It is the same venue as Liverpool’s 2005 triumph, dubbed the “Miracle of Istanbul” after they recovered from a 3-0 half-time deficit to beat AC Milan on penalties.
The home of the Turkish national team, the Atatürk Olympic Stadium is the country's largest stadium, and famously staged the 2005 UEFA Champions League decider, when Liverpool came from 3-0 down at half-time to beat AC Milan on penalties. Named in honour of Kemal Atatürk, founder of the Republic of Turkey, the venue was opened in 2002 and has held major athletics events – and a U2 concert – as well as being a home for Istanbul clubs Galatasaray (2003/04), İstanbul Başakşehir (2007–14) and Beşiktaş (2013–16). The stadium was originally intended as host venue for the 2020 final. However, the COVID-19 outbreak meant that on 17 June 2020, the UEFA Executive Committee decided to change the venues in line with the decision to stage the closing rounds of the 2019/20 competition in Lisbon, Portugal. Will the final still go ahead? UEFA has offered assurances that the final will take place as planned despite Turkey’s rising number of COVID-19 cases. |
Will fans be able to attend the final?
“The Champions League final will take place in Istanbul on May 29 with a limited number of spectators and we are assured that the temporary lockdown which is in force until May 17 should not have any impact on the match,” UEFA said in a statement.
“UEFA will continue to work closely with the Turkish Football Federation and the local and national authorities to stage the match safely.
“Further information regarding the capacity for the match and ticketing details will be communicated soon.”
COVID-19 travel restrictions will play a part as well. International travel is banned until at least 17 May under England’s lockdown roadmap, and a decision is not expected until early May as to when exactly this will be lifted and which countries may be exempt from travel restrictions
Turkey currently has a higher rate of infections than the UK and may not be on the green list in the travel traffic light system.
Is Champions League Final free to watch in UK?

Champions League's Trophy: Facts to know*The current UEFA Champions League trophy stands 73.5cm tall and weighs 7.5kg. *A rule introduced in 1968/69 stipulates that the cup becomes the property of any club who win the competition five times or three years in a row. The club then start a new cycle from zero. Real Madrid, Ajax, Bayern München, Milan, Liverpool and Barcelona all have a version in their trophy rooms. The rule was changed ahead of 2008/09, with the original trophy remaining with UEFA and the clubs awarded a replica. *The current trophy is the fifth version of the current design. It was commissioned by UEFA General Secretary Hans Bangerter after Real Madrid were allowed to keep the original in 1967. *It was designed and made in Berne (near UEFA's then headquarters) by Jürg Stadelmann. *Jürg Stadelmann recalled: "My father Hans and I went along to Herr Bangerter's office and covered the whole floor with drawings. He made comments like, 'The Bulgarians would like the bottom of that. The Spaniards would like this but the Italians would prefer that and the Germans would go for this.' We put the design together like a jigsaw puzzle." *The trophy took 340 hours to make, with Stadelmann meeting a strict deadline. "It had to be finished before 28 March," Stadelmann added, "because I was getting married and taking my wife on a ten-day boat trip to Los Angeles. I did the finer work, then it was finished off by the engraver, Fred Bänninger. On time, I am glad to say." |
Who won last season?
Bayern Munich clinched its sixth European title after beating Paris Saint-Germain 1-0 in the Champions League final in Lisbon at Champion League Final 2020, CNN reported. Victory for the German champion secures a lucrative treble after it also won the league and domestic cup earlier this year. Despite all the attacking talent on display, one goal was enough to separate the two sides with former PSG man Kingsley Coman heading in the winning goal in the 59th minute. Coman, a French international, guided his header into the bottom corner to add yet another trophy to his cabinet. |
