Lazio take on Bayern Munich at the Stadio Olimpico on Tuesday in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 knockout tie.
Lazio finished second behind Borussia Dortmund in Group F to qualify for the knockout stages for the first time since 2000, with reigning champions Bayern comfortably topping Group A.
Match preview
After a slow start to the current campaign, Lazio's 1-0 win over Sampdoria on Saturday moved Simone Inzaghi's side into the top four of Serie A.
Lazio were deserved winners on the day and unfortunate not to win by a more comfortable margin, restricting Claudio Ranieri's visitors to zero shots on target while having six themselves, with former Liverpool midfielder Luis Alberto's first-half strike proving to be the pivotal one.
Despite ultimately progressing out of a fairly generous group alongside Dortmund, Club Brugge and Zenit St. Petersburg with an unbeaten record, Inzaghi's side were made to work very hard for second spot, almost coming unstuck against ten-man Brugge on the final matchday.
However, the Italians are currently playing with far more confidence than they were at that stage of the season, and may well be coming up against Bayern at precisely the right moment.
Indeed, Bayern's form is not as strong at present as it was during the autumn and winter when they took a phenomenal 16 points from their Champions League group.
The Bavarians' lead at the top of the Bundesliga has been wiped to two points ahead of RB Leipzig after a disappointing 3-3 draw at home to Arminia Bielefeld was followed up by a 2-1 loss at Eintracht Frankfurt on Saturday.
Bayern's defensive vulnerabilities remained clear for anyone to see, with Daichi Kamada and Amin Younes finding too much space in the opposition penalty area to give Adi Hutter's side a 2-0 lead heading into the half-time interval, with Robert Lewandowski's 26th league goal of the season ultimately in vein, shows sportsmole.
However, Bayern are a different beast on the continent, remaining unbeaten in their last 17Champions League games as well as recently winning the Club World Cup. If they can defend with more organisation and determination, their offence should carry them into the quarter-finals.
Bayern Vs Lazio: UCL Round of 16: Latest Team News
Bayern will be travelling to Lazio Without Thomas Muller, Douglas Costa, Gnabry, Tolisso, Nubel, Pavard, Kouassi, and Tillman as some are injured and few are still recovering from Covid-19. This the very first time that these two sides are going head to head in the Champions League and Bayern are unbeaten in their last five away games against any Italian opposition. Meanwhile, this is Lazio’s first UEFA Champions League Knockout phase in after 21 years time. As a matter of fact Lazio will be going with their full potential and will try to progress further by trying to knock Bayern Munich out from the competition as like what Bayern Munich will be thinking like.
Bayern predicted lineup VS Lazio
Even without the few regulars missing from the squad travelling to Lazio, Hans Flick have enough fire powder in the team to defend or to unleash a massive attack to Lazio. This is something that the whole football fans are looking to see as how will Bayern Munich lineup on 24th Feb. So Alley Sport are here with our predicted staring lineup of Bayern Munich against Lazio in the 1st leg Round of 16 at Stadio Olimpico. Leon Goretzka might be getting a call back to the starting lineup against Lazio, according to alleysport.
Prediction
Lazio have lost just two of their last 10 competitive matches, winning the other eight, and have been exceptional at the Olimpico since the end of 2020. Indeed, head coach Simone Inzaghi has masterminded seven successive victories in Rome. After winning the World Club Cup earlier this month, Bayern have been brought crashing back down to earth, failing to win two successive games, including a 2-1 loss at Eintracht Frankfurt at the weekend. Nevertheless, FC Hollywood were excellent in the group stages, earning 16 points from their six matches. Bayern may have been nigh-on unstoppable in the group stages, but the absence of key man coupled with fatigue following the Club World Cup could see Lazio earn a first leg advantage on Tuesday night, cites whoscored. |
