About Cake

Presented by Cake on FX. A comedy-drama that explores the life of a young black pastry chef and her eccentric family and friends as she strives to open a small-town bakery.

Cake is an American live-action/adult animated anthology television series that premiered on FXX on September 25, 2019. The series features an assortment of short-form comedy. The second season premiered on March 5, 2020. The third season premiered on July 9, 2020.

Cake is a handcrafted assortment of bite-sized shorts carefully curated and served up as a tasty treat for the mind. Featuring a diverse array of narratives from storytellers both new and established, this half-hour weekly showcase features both live-action and animated comedy programs of varied length that are equal parts thought-provoking, laugh-inducing, artistic, authentic and raw. (Not to mention, totally gif-able!)

Each of this season’s nine episodes will be anchored by Nine Films About Technology from Peter Huang, loosely connected and darkly comedic live-action stories about human relationships in this modern age of smart phones, social media and connectivity.

Both the weekly showcase and individual programs will also stream on FX on Hulu. Cake is produced by FX Productions, as reported by Nextseasontv.

Release date

The fourth season of ‘Cake’ is set to premiere on March 11, 2021, only on FXX, a partner channel of FX.

Plot

The dark comedy series is a culmination of anthologies in the form of bite-sized bits. The episodes of the series consist of multiple short segments, both live-action and animated. Each episode contains a season-length "anchor" miniseries with various other shorts filling out the remaining time. Season 4 will follow the same bizarre format.

FXX describes the series as a “handcrafted collection of bite-sized shorts,” and “a diverse array of narratives from storytellers both new and established… that are equal parts thought-provoking, laugh-inducing, artistic, authentic, and raw.” No specific details of the new season have been announced as of yet, according to Meaww.

Creators

The series was conceptualized by Kate Lambert, the FX head of animation. Speaking to Decider in 2019, Lambert said: “We had gotten into the limited series form a few years prior. We felt like that form was having a sort of resurgence starting with ‘Fargo’, ‘American Horror Story’. [Cake] kind of came out of, ‘OK, what are the other forms?’ The half-hour, the one-hour, the limited, well what about short form? Why can’t short-form have the same kind of criteria applied to it? What’s going on there? Why is nobody playing there in the on-air environment?”

Lambert added, “We’re trying to make ‘Cake’ an actual destination show, which is slightly different than what’s been done before. We’re trying to say, ‘Come watch this show. You might like everything. You might like some. But we guarantee that something will come along that’s interesting. This isn’t a side hustle of the network. It’s another extension of the brand in short form. It’s treated with the same respect and care.”

Has Cake been renewed or canceled?

At the time of writing, Cake has not been renewed by FXX for a fourth season, nor has it been officially cancelled.

Considering the global health crisis, it’s not unusual for producers and networks to remain quiet about renewals, so fans shouldn’t panic just yet. However, we are cautious about putting all our eggs in one basket and saying that the series is likely to be renewed for a fourth season.

On one hand, Cake remains as popular as ever with hardcore fans, the mixture of animation and live-action makes it financially viable in these uncertain times and it still fits the FXX bill. What’s more, with the networks recent acquisition from Disney, there should be more resources floating around for at least one more season.

On the other hand, we don’t actually know how many people are watching the series. Renewals are often based on viewership’s and if Cake isn’t meeting the expectations from FXX (or even Disney) then it could very well be axed.

Hopefully, we will get an official statement on the future of Cake within the next few weeks, so keep checking back in for updates.

Trailer

No trailer for ‘Cake’ Season 4 has been released as of yet. Watch this space for more.

There is a chance that season 4 could be pushed back a few more months because of the ongoing pandemic – although a series like Cake won’t be affected as much as purely live-action shows.
