BritBox October: Overview

This October, BritBox South Africa will feature two classic favorites - "Midsomer Murders" and "Friday Night Dinner" - as well as a riveting new crime thriller set in Edinburgh that was created by "Line of Duty" showrunner Jed Mercurio.

The much-anticipated "Payback" BritBox Original is a character-driven drama series executive-produced by the brilliant Mercurio. It tells the tale of a woman (Morven Christie of "The Bay") who gets mixed up in a police investigation into a dangerous crime lord (Peter Mullan of "Ozark").

In addition to being brand-new and exclusive to BritBox, "Claridge's: The Megabuild" explores the extraordinary engineering feat that took place during renovations to this five-star luxury hotel in the heart of London's affluent Mayfair, all the while oblivious wealthy guests.

Nothing beats adding a classic to your list of shows to binge, and "Midsomer Murders" fits the bill! The genteel English countryside has never been so deadly, as eight feature-length episodes from season 13 of this beloved murder mystery series arrive on BritBox this month.

Don't miss season two of the hilarious sitcom Friday Night Dinner for something equally retro but undoubtedly rowdier; get ready for tricks, silly antics, and general mayhem with the eccentric Goodman family!

Catch two spooky shorts by Mr. James, "Count Magnus and Martin's Close," landing just in time for Halloween. Nothing is more shiver-inducing than a traditional British ghost story!

The DStv Explora Ultra and Streama devices in South Africa, as well as add-to-bill options for all DStv subscribers, both support the BritBox app. The app is also accessible on Android TV, which includes Smart TVs with Android TV support, Google Chromecast with GoogleTV, Nvidia Shield, MiBox, and MiStick, as well as Android and Apple mobile devices and tablets, FireTV, Samsung Smart TV, LG Smart TV, and some Hisense, Toshiba, and OEM-branded VIDAA smart TVs. Claridge’s: The Megabuild (new & exclusive to BritBox)

Thursday 5 October 2023

The iconic Claridge's Hotel, which epitomizes old-school glamour and is a favorite of royalty and celebrities, is undergoing its most significant renovation in modern memory. This extraordinary documentary series, which was shot over a six-year period, explores the extraordinary logistical difficulties of excavating a five-story mega-basement in the heart of London, building four additional floors on top of the hotel, and building the most expensive penthouse in the entire city without interfering with the regular operations of one of the most opulent hotels in the world.

Despite appearances, the hotel is actually a busy construction site even though well-off guests continue to check in and out as usual. The ultimate goal is to make sure that this Mayfair landmark becomes the benchmark for future ultra-luxury hotels. This fascinating film, which is narrated by the actress Emilia Fox (Silent Witness, Signora Volpe), explores the hotel's ambitious and complex engineering achievement.

Midsomer Murders (new to BritBox)

Season 13 (2010)

Thursday 12 October 2023

Behind the neatly trimmed hedges and net curtains of the charming cottages in the picture-perfect county of Midsomer, nothing is as it seems. Underneath the serene exterior, scandals, jealousy, and outright evil lurk. Indeed, among the eccentric locals, murder and blackmail are surprisingly commonplace.

Following the retirement of his uncle Tom (John Nettles), this iconic series' 13th season sees Neil Dudgeon (Son of Rambow, The Messiah) take the lead as DCI John Barnaby, assisted by the methodical Ben Jones (Jason Hughes - Death in Paradise, Marcella) and pathologist Dr. Bullard (Barry Jackson - Silent Witness, Kavanagh QC).

In the first of eight feature-length episodes, "The Sword of Guillaume," a serial killer uses an old sword in a gory attack as DCI Barnaby travels to Brighton on a bus with the Causton Chamber of Commerce.

Season 2 (2012)

Thursday 19 October 2023

Welcome to the hilarious second season of the BAFTA-nominated sitcom Friday Night Dinner, which chronicles the antics of the Goodman family, a secular Jewish family who have turned their eccentricities into an art form.

Martin’s Close (short film, 2019)

Thursday 26 October 2023

Just in time for Halloween, two eerie British shorts! Turn off the lights, pull the covers up, and wait until witching hour to watch these two 30-minute ghost stories by British author MR James, which Mark Gatiss (Dr. Who, Sherlock) adapted and directed.

Travel back in time to 1863 in "Count Magnus," which Radio Times called "a spooky diversion with a delicious twist." A British travel writer visiting Sweden is captivated by the tale of the long-dead nobleman Count Magnus, who, he learns, does not lie comfortably in his tomb. This supernatural tale, which is based on Henry James's short story of the same name from 1904, stars BAFTA winner Jason Watkins (Being Human, The Crown, McDonald & Dodds).

The chilling "Martin's Close" tells the story of a young squire who is accused of murder in 1684 by the King's Counsel and whose life is in the hands of a notorious "hanging judge" (BAFTA and Oscar winner Peter Capaldi, Dr. Who, The Thick of It). The poor country girl he is accused of killing was seen after she passed away, so the case is not clear-cut.
