20. Cold Shoulder
Photo: Youtube |
"Cold Shoulder" is the third single from soul singer Adele released from her debut album 19. It was released digitally in Ireland on 30 March 2008 and in the UK on March 31, 2008. This is the only song on the album to be produced by Mark Ronson. Ex-Jamiroquai bassist Stuart Zender plays on the song who is also part of Mark Ronson's touring band. Adele performed the song on Friday Night with Jools Holland on February 8, 2008 and on Saturday Night Live during the October 18, 2008 show. A remix by Basement Jaxx also received airplay and is digitally available. The song’s B-side is “Now and Then,” which was released as a bonus track from the Japanese deluxe edition of 19.
Against a shuffling hip-hop beat produced by Mark Ronson -- who had previously worked with Amy Winehouse on Back to Black -- Adele cuts loose with a deceptively playful sassiness that lets you know that she's not falling for this guy's game.

It's about sex, it's about arguing, one of the most intimate moments in my life. 'Cause you just blurt it out. It's a bit like, a drunk tongue is an honest one. That's definitely my motto, in life. That's why I don't really like drinking no more. The panic you get when you wake up the next morning." She further expanded on the song's meaning with The New York Times:
“ Whenever it's on, I always get hypnotized by the beat. That's just about the general intimacy of a relationship. It sounds very sexual, but it's not only sexual. It's about every aspect of intimacy in a relationship. It's just wanting everything! I want the good, the bad, the warts and all. I want the amazing.”
When asked what her boyfriend, Simon Konecki, thought of the song, she stated, "My man is loyal. My man is strong. So we spoke early on, and he said, 'Your writing isn't anything to do with me.' He's fine with it. And it takes a strong man, I think, to be like that."
