There’s always that one photo, video or memory that you took the time to save, yet for some reason, it’s not yours anymore. Whether it was a lost or broken phone, a faulty hard drive or some other technological mishap, it can feel impossible to keep all your files in one piece.

Thankfully, the day before April Fools is World Backup Day, which saves us from being the punchline of a joke played by our own devices. It is the day when we finally stop saying, “I’ll do it tomorrow,” and make sure all our precious files find a safe space.

World Backup Day: Time & Date

It may not be a widely celebrated holiday, but World Backup Day — celebrated on Mar. 31, just ahead of April Fools' Day — aims to encourage computer users to regularly back up their data. That appears to be something many users don't do.

It's a day all about backup awareness, and getting more people to start backing up their computers if they don't already, or — for those who do — to take a serious look at their backup strategy, and make sure it's up to snuff, according to CBC.

There isn’t much history, as the first celebration of this geek holiday was in 2011. World Backup Day is less than a decade old.

But the need is real, now more than ever before. Especially in light of this salient fact: April Fools’ Day. March 31, the day before, is an excellent time to check your backups. On the eve of the day famous for pranks, this might be your last chance.

You may have learned at the University of Hard Knocks that it’s not a question of “if” you’re going to lose your data, but “when.” Having a redundant copy of it can make all the difference, and you may be able to skip the course at U of HK on Pulling Your Hair Out, Billpetro cited.

From the most casual computer user to the largest organizations, everyone stores irreplaceable information on their devices. Without regular backups, this information is vulnerable to both accidental and malicious data loss – threats that are only growing.

Right now the average American spends more than 11 hours each day on digital devices. They create, share, and store countless files with the world, opening themselves up to an increasingly dangerous digital landscape. Today it’s estimated that there’s a ransomware attack on businesses every 40 seconds and among personal users, they’re even more frequent. Additionally, given the rise in time spent on digital devices, it should come as no surprise that the amount of data being generated around the world is growing rapidly every day.

With this growth comes more incentive for cybercriminals to strike, more strain put on the hardware and software that stores and generates all this information, and a much higher likelihood that when things are lost or broken, the consequences will be more frustrating and costly than ever before.

Backups represent a simple, effective way to reduce these risks to the files, apps, and systems that make up your digital world, Acronis noted.

Copy your files to an external hard drive

Set aside 15 minutes to an hour to back up all of the existing files on your desktop, laptop or pc. Simply purchase a hard drive of your liking - we recommend 1TB drives or more - and copy your files to the drive.

Play in the clouds

Can't buy a hard drive in time? No worries! There are plenty of companies that specialize in storing your documents online. Do your research and figure out which service works best for you. We recommend the Google Cloud, WMware Storage or Barracuda Cloud Storage, but they are all great!

Back that thing up party

Invite all the employees on your team to back up their files with one of the methods above. This will create a safer culture among your staff and prevent any projects from slipping through the crack. The last thing you need is a client asking for a file that was wrongfully discarded, Nationaltoday noted.
