Philomena (2013)

Coming to Netflix: Monday, March 22nd

Not many English movies coming to Netflix from other providers this week but we’re happy to report that one Netflix has managed to scoop this week is a beaut. Nominated for 4 Oscars, this biopic features Judi Dench and Steve Coogan in jaw-dropping performances.

A howl of anti-clerical outrage wrapped in a tea cozy, “Philomena” applies amusing banter and a sheen of good taste to the real-life quest of Philomena Lee, an Irishwoman who spent decades searching for the out-of-wedlock son taken from her by Catholic nuns and sold into adoption overseas, reported by Variety.

Smoothly tooled as an odd-couple vehicle for Judi Dench in the title role and Steve Coogan as Martin Sixsmith, the British journalist who brought Lee’s story to international attention, this smug but effective middlebrow crowdpleaser boasts a sharper set of dentures than most films of its type, shrewdly mining its material for laughs and righteous anger as well as tears. With an award push for Dench likely in the works, the Weinstein Co. should have no trouble positioning director Stephen Frears’ latest as a sleeper success, certain to rouse audiences not put off by its genteel calculation.

DOTA: Dragon’s Blood

Coming to Netflix: Thursday, March 25th

Seemingly coming out of nowhere is this new anime series based on the video game by Valve Software, DOTA. The series will take a look into the backstories of some of the biggest characters from the MOBA which is world-renowned and based on viewing figures for the trailers, it’s sure to be a hit.

It was a rather perplexing moment when Netflix and Valve dropped the teasers of DOTA: Dragon’s Blood because it honestly came out of nowhere. Still, it was a good kind of surprise, like the kind when you needed True Sight and your support swung by last minute and used the Dust of Appearance so you can get that Killing Spree.

Produced by Ashley Miller, best known for his works on Fringe, Andromeda, Thor and X-Men: First Class, it would be fair to say we were all nervous since this is his first-ever work on a game or an animated adaptation of one. Prior to the teasers, there wasn’t any news or build-up towards the release. The show was basically one month away from its announcement and that’s unusual. But the truth is, the show never really needed the promotion anyway because fans had long rallied behind the announcements in support of their favorite game’s first-ever venture into the animation screen. It is considered long-awaited news and as DOTA fans, we will see through the skittish kickoff no matter what, Geek Culture cites.

The Irregulars (Season 1)

Coming to Netflix: Friday, March 26th

Hailing from three of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes novels, the Baker Street Irregulars are a group of street kids the titular detective would sometimes employ in his cases to get the information he wouldn't normally be able to access.

In Netflix's adaptation, creator Tom Bidwell reimagined the young gang of boys from the books into a slightly older group of teens who are the only ones who can stop an impending dark magical threat from destroying London — and they don't need Holmes to do it. "Our story focuses on the Irregulars, the gang themselves. It's their story, their adventure," Bidwell tells EW. "Sherlock Holmes is in the story, it's his world, but he's not the central focus. He plays a big part of it, don't get me wrong, but it's about the kids and their journeys."

According to Entertainment Weekly, the onscreen version of the Irregulars is led by headstrong, fierce Bea (Thaddea Graham, second from left in the photo below) and includes her younger sister Jessie (Darci Shaw, third from left) and their friends Billy (Jojo Macari, first from the right), Spike (McKell David, third from the right), and newcomer Leopold (Harrison Osterfield, first from left). They're brought into the world of the supernatural and magical by Dr. Watson (Royce Pierreson, second from right), the dour business partner of the legendary Holmes (Henry Lloyd-Hughes, not pictured). And centering The Irregulars on a young female leader fighting to save her younger sister was a conscious choice on Bidwell's part, knowing that Holmes and Irregulars stories are usually male-dominated.
